Read previewBeware the "Harris Honeymoon," a Trump team pollster said in an internal memo. In the message, Tony Fabrizio cautioned that though Kamala Harris will likely see a bump in national polls in the upcoming week, nobody should panic because nothing major has changed for them. Pouring salt on the wound, Harris' campaign announced record fundraising numbers in its first 24 hours and is racking up key endorsements. Related storiesThough it's barely been 48 hours since Biden ended his reelection campaign, some pollsters have already started testing Harris against Trump. Harris' very womanhood may pose a challenge for Trump, who often crosses the line when criticizing women and may alienate female voters.

This story is available exclusively to Business Insider subscribers. Thomas Gift, director of UCL's Centre on US Politics, told BI that Trump's selection of Vance was "a confident — some might say too confident" decision. AdvertisementShe noted that with Biden leading the Democratic ticket, Trump and Vance could effectively criticize Biden's age and competency. While Vance's first solo campaign rally in Virginia on Monday wasn't as disastrous or widely watched as Biden's debate performance, Fahey told Business Insider it still revealed a potential weakness. Beyond his loyalty to Trump, Fahey said, "Vance adds nothing to the Republican ticket."

Before last week’s Republican convention, Donald Trump seemed to be moving away from the populism that characterized his 2016 campaign. “He’s defending big business, cozying up to billionaires, and wooing C.E.O.s.”When Mr. Trump named Senator JD Vance of Ohio as his running mate, though, pundits quickly concluded that he was doubling down on populism. In his convention speech, Mr. Vance denounced NAFTA and China trade deals and promised to prioritize American workers over multinational corporations. On the other hand, in a long interview with Bloomberg (conducted in late June) that came out after the announcement of Mr. Vance’s selection, Mr. Trump hardly sounded like a firebrand economic populist. He floated the idea of reducing corporate tax rates to 15 percent and said he’d consider the JPMorgan Chase C.E.O., Jamie Dimon, as a potential Treasury secretary.

U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris hits the campaign trail on Tuesday for the first time since President Joe Biden announced that he would end his reelection campaign and endorsed Harris for president. Still, some key Democratic endorsements have not yet come through for Harris, such as from House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, both of New York. Former President Barack Obama, one of the parry's most revered figures, has likewise not publicly endorsed Harris yet. Speculation swirls about potential running mates for Harris, with Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly, Pennsylvania Gov. While Harris campaigns in Wisconsin, Biden is expected to host Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington.

But the mercurial billionaire was once a skeptic — and very vocal about why he thought Trump shouldn't govern the US. Back in July 2022, Musk criticized Trump after the former president called him a "bullshit artist" during a rally in Alaska. Musk later said in a follow-up post the same day that having Trump as president would result in "too much drama." Musk would go on to host DeSantis' campaign launch on X in May 2023, which was riddled with technical glitches and delays. The pair got closer this year, eventually culminating in a full-throated endorsement of Trump from Musk after Trump survived a failed assassination attempt on July 13.

Her multi-hour phone blitz to Democratic Party power players on Sunday hinted at an operation primed ahead of time but that was kept secret and didn’t leak. The vice president has shown signs of improving her political skills recently, but that’s never been her forte. In a memo to reporters, the Trump campaign previewed a blistering assault to come on Harris. Harris is the least popular vice president in history – which is no surprise given her terrible record,” the memo said. The question now is whether Harris, who has exhibited considerable political liabilities as vice president, has the skills, staying power and luck to take advantage.

Kamala Harris has an opportunity that would not have been available to President Biden if he’d been the Democratic nominee. She can reintroduce herself to voters in ways that address their biggest complaints about Biden’s record and the Democratic Party. She is Biden’s vice president, after all. Yesterday, a Republican political group urged candidates to criticize Harris as a radical, while JD Vance, the Republican vice-presidential nominee, told a rally, “The Biden record is the Kamala Harris record.”Still, Harris is not Biden, and she can subtly distance herself from his record and emphasize what she would do differently. Hubert Humphrey surged in the 1968 race after he belatedly separated himself from Lyndon Johnson’s Vietnam policies.

In the days since Judge Aileen Cannon issued her inexplicable 93-page dismissal of the classified-documents case against Donald Trump, I’ve been coming back to something JD Vance said on a podcast in 2021. Mr. Vance, the Ohio senator and now Mr. Trump’s running mate, predicted on the podcast that the former president, who had been recently disgraced by his insurrectionary attempt to overturn the 2020 election, would nevertheless run again in 2024. Should Mr. Trump win, Mr. Vance said, he had some advice: “Fire every single midlevel bureaucrat, every civil servant in the administrative state, replace them with our people.” And if the courts ruled against him? No problem, Mr. Vance said: Just blow them off. “We are in a late republican period,” he added, alluding to weakness in the ancient Roman Republic.

Washington and the world are still reeling from President Joe Biden's surprise announcement on Sunday that he is ending his teetering re-election campaign. But Biden's swift endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris to replace him at the top of the Democratic ticket is energizing Democrats and breathing new life into their campaign to defeat former President Donald Trump and his running mate, Ohio Sen. JD Vance. The "Biden for President" campaign committee has officially been renamed the Harris for President committee, maintaining the Biden team's infrastructure, staff and — crucially — its $98 million in cash reserves. Democrats excited about a new ticket have donated tens of millions of dollars online to the Harris for President campaign.

Investors are gauging what a potential Kamala Harris presidency could mean for the stock market. Second-quarter GDP and the June PCE index will be released later this week. The gains came one day after President Joe Biden announced he would not seek re-election, and instead endorsed his Vice President, Kamala Harris. That will be followed by the Federal Reserve's preferred inflation gauge, the PCE index, at 8:30 a.m. on Friday. Economists expect the June Core PCE index to rise 2.5% year over year, which is not far off from the Fed's long-term inflation target of 2%.

CNN —With President Joe Biden’s support unleashing a flood of endorsements from many prominent Democrats across the country, Kamala Harris has emerged as the favorite to take his place as the party’s nominee for president. The campaign formally amended filings with the Federal Election Commission to rename its principal committee and declare Harris a candidate for president. Cooper previously waved off speculation that he might be on the shortlist for vice presidential nominees if Biden steps aside and Harris becomes the nominee. “Are you at least open to the possibility of being a running mate to Vice President Harris?,” Beshear was asked on MSNBC Monday morning. “I’m not going anywhere.”Whitmer, first elected governor in 2018, emerged as a prominent executive during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Obviously, the big political news of the past couple of days has come from the Democratic side. But before last week’s Republican National Convention fades from view, let me focus instead on a development on the G.O.P. Until now, most of the anti-immigration sloganeering coming from Donald Trump and his campaign has involved false claims that we’re experiencing a migrant crime wave. Increasingly, however, Trump and his associates have started making the case that immigrants are stealing American jobs — specifically, the accusation that immigrants are inflicting terrible damage on the livelihoods of Black workers. Of course, the idea that immigrants are taking jobs away from native-born Americans, including native-born Black Americans, isn’t new.

In those phone calls, Harris made clear that while she was grateful for Biden’s endorsement, she planned to earn the Democratic nomination in her own right. CNN —Kamala Harris has spent much more of her life as a prosecutor than as a senator or vice president – and that is exactly how she is now going to run against Donald Trump. The vice president had expected that to be part of her role making the case for Biden. “As a former prosecutor, Vice President Harris has a lot of experience holding convicted felons accountable,” said Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, a former primary opponent in the 2020 Democratic race who quickly endorsed Harris after the news of Biden’s decision broke. “The prosecutor approach is really about just deconstructing an issue,” Harris told CNN in an exclusive interview after a campaign stop in Las Vegas in April.
