CNN —After a series of mishaps, trucks of humanitarian aid are now beginning to roll onto the US military pier off the Gaza coast at a steadier pace. The US military says it is now moving about 800 pallets of humanitarian aid per day to Gaza via the temporary pier, or roughly 40 trucks. Humanitarian aid operations in Gaza have been severely hampered by an increase in Israeli military operations over the past month and humanitarian aid officials say lawlessness and looting are also on the rise. The Israeli military says it has been getting hundreds of aid trucks into Gaza recently, blaming humanitarian aid agencies’ lack of capacity for not picking up and distributing the aid. Pressed on criticism from humanitarian aid groups that the US’s $230-million effort would have been better spent pressuring Israel to get more aid into Gaza via land routes, Capt.

Wanda and Randy Bliek awoke on Saturday to the sound of water lapping against the walls of their home in Rock Valley, Iowa. The couple rushed to their pickup truck and drove onto the street, but surging water pushed them against the curb. Unable to open the truck doors, they said, they escaped through the windows and climbed out into the neck-high current gushing down their street. For eight long blocks, they alternated between swimming and walking to safety while neighbors screamed for help from their roofs. At one point, Ms. Bliek, 65, told her husband she was not sure she could continue.

Car manufacturer Ford told CNN it is working with dealers to set up alternative software systems and other workarounds. Several dealerships on the East Coast told CNN on Sunday they are manually filling out forms to process sales. Chinese carmakers accounted for 88% of the EV market in Brazil and 70% in Thailand in Q1, according to ABI Research figures. The EV markets in many of these countries are small now, but they're growing rapidly. This is because Chinese automakers are known for their ability to build electric cars for less than their foreign competitors. Australian Senator and shadow cyber-security minister James Paterson said earlier this year that Chinese EVs pose a growing cybersecurity risk. "India is still a little wary of the Chinese market," said Dylan Khoo, an analyst at ABI Research.

Taylor Wily, who played a shrimp truck vendor and police informant on the television reboot of “Hawaii Five-0,” and who in his earlier years was an acclaimed professional sumo wrestler, died on Thursday. Paul Almond, a legal representative for Mr. Wily, confirmed his death. Mr. Wily starred as Kamekona in more than 170 episodes of “Hawaii Five-0,” a reimagining of the 1970s crime drama that followed the escapades of state police officers on the island. His character became a fan favorite, gradually morphing into the show’s resident entrepreneur, running a shaved ice business and a helicopter tour company alongside his shrimp venture. “‘Hawaii Five-0’ could become ‘Kamekona Five-0,’” Masi Oka, who played Dr. Max Bergman on the series, said in a 2012 interview with CBS.

A truck carrying aid for delivery into Gaza drives through the Kerem Shalom crossing in southern Israel, on June 17. Netanyahu then contacted his military secretary and said this was unacceptable, until he was assured the fighting in Rafah would continue. Israeli security minister Ben Gvir — a leading right-wing member of the country’s cabinet — condemned the pause. Railing against the right-wing government that until recently counted him as a trusted insider, Hungary’s most popular and improbable opposition leader stood on the back of a flatbed truck surrounded by cheering followers. “Step by step, brick by brick, we will take back our country,” shouted the opposition leader, Peter Magyar, reciting what, during a tour of towns and villages across Hungary, has been the crowd-pleasing mantra of the 43-year-old’s upstart political movement. Making the moment all the more provocative was the location that Mr. Magyar chose for the rally: just down the road from a house that Prime Minister Viktor Orban owns in Felcsut, the village where the leader grew up. Since taking power 14 years ago, Mr. Orban has won four general elections in a row, refashioning Hungary into an “illiberal democracy” often more in tune with China and Russia than with its nominal allies in NATO and the European Union. Now, for the first time in years, the country has been swept by a sense that change, though not imminent, is possible.

Reached by phone, Lisa’s live-in partner Maria Tazbaz said she sold the Easter baskets at her hardware store. By 2009 Lisa was on supervised parole, but couldn’t stop committing crimes, according to her parole officer, who asked a judge to consider putting her back in prison. In a letter to the judge, the parole officer outlined Lisa’s infractions: She faked cancer to get sympathy from a court on a charge for bogus checks. After spending much of 2010 and 2011 imprisoned in Oklahoma, Lisa was released. At a hearing for the revocation of her release, the parole officer testified she had “noticed, and attempted to stop, a pattern by the defendant of defrauding her boyfriends.” A judge locked her back up.

A sign is displayed outside a Toyota Motor Corp. dealership on Jan. 30, 2024 in Tokyo, Japan. Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda apologized Monday for massive cheating on certification tests for seven vehicle models as the automaker suspended production of three of them. Toyota took the crown with 10.7% market share, while Germany's Volkswagen came in second with a 6% market share. But for Toyota, the top automaker by market share in the world, the latest safety scandal is not the first time it's being investigated for false test data. In April last year, Daihatsu said it had rigged side-collision safety tests carried out for 88,000 small cars, most of those sold as Toyotas.

Trump’s Anti-Vaccine Problem
  + stars: | 2024-06-14 | by ( Jess Bidgood | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Former President Donald Trump’s chaotic and denial-filled response to the Covid-19 pandemic turned off independent voters and arguably cost him the 2020 presidential election. Four years later, a different aspect of his handling of the pandemic has emerged as a sensitive subject with another slice of the electorate: his own die-hard supporters. The vaccines, a scientific breakthrough, have been given to 270 million Americans and are estimated to have saved millions of lives. “I’m not real thrilled with the accelerated rollout of the vaccine,” said Amaris Angell, the owner of a recently shuttered food truck business, who went to see Trump in Las Vegas on Sunday. “He still seems to be proud of himself for that.”

Geologist M. King Hubbert developed the "peak oil" theory in the 1950s. He famously projected that U.S. oil production would peak between 1965 and 1970, which seemed accurate as U.S. oil production did peak around 1970. Hubbert's prediction about the U.S. oil production peak was largely accurate for conventional oil production. Still, global oil production has not followed Hubbert's anticipated timeline due to discoveries, technological advancements, and new extraction techniques. Hydraulic fracturing (fracking) and deep-water drilling have significantly increased oil production beyond what was initially thought possible.

An electric Ford truck is displayed during the Electrify Expo D.C. in Washington, D.C., on July 23, 2023. Ford Motor is ending a controversial electric vehicle dealership program that initially asked store owners to invest upward of $1 million to sell EVs. That's led to automakers delaying or canceling future electric vehicles and investments. "The world has changed," Marin Gjaja, chief operating officer of Ford's Model E electric vehicle business, said Thursday during a media briefing. Instead, Ford will open EV sales to all of its dealers in an attempt to grow sales of its all-electric cars and trucks.
