'Smooth operator' Sainz ends Red Bull's winning streak
  + stars: | 2023-09-17 | by ( Tom Westbrook | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +5 min
"We nailed the race," said Sainz after his second career win for the Italian team and first since Silverstone last year. The Spaniard eked out his hard tyres for 42 laps, winning at the slowest possible speed, for Ferrari's first victory since Charles Leclerc triumphed in Austria in July last year. No team has ever won every race in a season of more than 10 rounds but Red Bull had looked capable of doing so until Singapore struck. Mercedes trimmed Red Bull's lead in the constructors' standings to 308 points, keeping them waiting at least another weekend for the title. Verstappen, who started on the hard tyres, moved up to second with Perez fourth but they were soon overhauled and plunged down the field after stopping under normal conditions.

The 80-year-old Austrian later apologized for his remarks, and Pérez, speaking ahead of this weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix, said that he had also received a personal apology. “It’s completely unacceptable what he said,” Mercedes driver Hamilton, who has long spoken out against racial discrimination in Formula One, told Sky Sports when asked about Marko’s comments. “I think it just highlights firstly the work that still needs to be done. When you have a personal relationship with someone, I think it’s a feeling you’re going to have.”CNN has contacted Red Bull for comment. Team mate Carlos Sainz was 0.078 slower in a session with yellow flags to warn drivers of monitor lizards crossing the track. Verstappen has yet to win in Singapore, or start on pole there, and Red Bull had identified Ferrari as the main threat coming into the weekend after their strong performance in the Italian Grand Prix at Monza. "I think this track is going to be one of the toughest of the season for us," Red Bull team boss Christian Horner told Sky Sports television. "There's a lizard again on the track, bit smaller this time," said Verstappen, who encountered a much bigger one on the same track in 2016, over the team radio.

Swedbank estimates the current shortfall for Heimstaden Bostad could be roughly 30 billion crowns ($2.7 billion). Sweden's financial regulator launched an inquiry into why and how Alecta had invested $4.5 billion in the property giant, in the first place. Marko, 80, apologised last week after referring to Perez as a "South American" who was less focused than dominant Red Bull team mate Max Verstappen or the team's now-retired champion Sebastian Vettel. "We can confirm that Helmut Marko has received a written warning and been reminded of his responsibilities as a public figure in motor sport in line with the FIA Code of Ethics," said an FIA spokesman at the Singapore Grand Prix. Perez said on Thursday he had accepted a personal apology from Marko, whose comments continued to provoke a strong reaction in the paddock. SINGAPORE, Sept 14 (Reuters) - Lewis Hamilton slammed Red Bull motorsport adviser Helmut Marko on Thursday for "completely unacceptable" comments blaming Mexican Formula One driver Sergio Perez's fluctuating form on his ethnicity. Perez told reporters separately at the Singapore Grand Prix that he had accepted a personal apology from the 80-year-old Austrian, an influential member of his dominant Formula One team's leadership. "I got an apology from him, a direct apology, which to me was the most important one," Perez told reporters. That to me is what matters," added the 33-year-old, who joined Red Bull in 2021 and has won two races so far this season. The Dominican Republic said it would seal its border with Haiti on Friday morning amid a conflict over access to a river shared between the two historically contentious neighbors. The move would further isolate Haiti, a nation that has descended into gang violence and growing hunger. Tensions have grown in recent days over construction in the Massacre River, which straddles both nations. President Luis Abinader of the Dominican Republic, who claimed that the excavation of a canal on the river in Haiti would harm Dominican farmers, froze Haitian visas this week and threatened to close the more than 220 miles of border if the two sides did not reach a resolution. A Haitian delegation met with the Dominicans in Santo Domingo, the capital, on Wednesday for 11th-hour negotiations, but there was no apparent resolution, and on Thursday, Mr. Abinader announced his decision to shut the boundary between the two Caribbean island nations starting at 6 a.m. local time Friday.

Currently, TikTok spokesperson Laura Perez said more than 200,000 sellers have registered for TikTok Shop. ByteDance, the Beijing company that owns TikTok, already runs a thriving social media marketplace on Douyin, its twin video app for the Chinese market. “No social app has really been able to master e-commerce in the U.S.,” said Jasmine Enberg, a social media analyst at Insider Intelligence. Critics have levied accusations that the social media giant could be a tool for China’s government to surveil Americans. Insider Today: Big Tech goes on trial

Speaking of Big Tech, it's a big day for the industry as the DOJ's antitrust trial against Google starts today. It's also a strategy the Department of Justice argues is "anticompetitive and exclusionary" in a landmark trial for Big Tech kicking off today. The trial is the biggest to hit the tech industry since the government sued Microsoft in the late 1990s. AdvertisementAdvertisementMore broadly, the case is a bellwether for how the government could argue future cases against Big Tech companies in the modern era. Each case is unique, but their focus on monopolistic behavior means the Google trial could set precedents followed by both sides.

Elon Musk foiled an attack on Russia’s Black Sea fleet last year by refusing to let Ukraine use his satellite network to guide its drones, Mr. Musk has acknowledged, provoking a furious response from a top official in Kyiv and renewing questions about the global power wielded by a multibillionaire businessman. But Mr. Musk would not allow the network to be used for an attack last September with maritime drones on the Russian naval base at Sevastopol in Crimea, the Ukrainian territory that Russia illegally seized in 2014 and then annexed. At the time of the attempted attack, Mr. Musk spoke with the Russian ambassador to the United States, Anatoly I. Antonov, who had told him an attack on Crimea “could lead to a nuclear response,” according to a biography of Mr. Musk by the historian and journalist Walter Isaacson. The account was included in an excerpt from the book published on Thursday by The Washington Post. Marko had made his remarks on the energy drink company's television station following last weekend's Italian Grand Prix at Monza. An attempt by Marko to clarify his comments only dug a deeper hole. While Marko attends races in Red Bull Racing uniform, he reports to the energy drink company and is not an employee of the British-based champions. Germany's now-retired Vettel won four for Red Bull from 2010-13. Marko did compliment Perez for finishing second in Italy last weekend, a race that handed Verstappen a record 10th win in a row.

The trend continued upward, so much so that by 1999 some universities had admissions policies that explicitly favored men. In doing so, the school managed to maintain a ratio of 45 percent men to 55 percent women. The young women’s lawyers argued that the extra points for men violated both the equal-protection clause and Title IX, which guarantees equal educational opportunities for men and women. But Title IX does not prohibit gender-based affirmative action in admissions at all schools. That Title IX exemption still stands, allowing private colleges and universities to privilege men during the admissions process.
