A new extension will be constructed to accommodate further war dead, including those discovered during the construction of the canal. Inland ports are planned along the SNEC route, aiding exports, as well as providing recreational opportunities, say its designers. The Anthropocene epoch is proposed as a chapter in Earth's history reflecting the transformation of the planet's climate and ecology as a result of human activity. The Anthropocene epoch has not yet been formally recognised by a scientific body called the International Commission on Stratigraphy. The scientists obtained core samples of sediment at Crawford Lake and sediments, soils, corals and ice samples at the other 11 sites. Crawford Lake sediments provided a record of accelerating changes that have unfolded in the past few decades, including traces of fly ash produced by burning fossil fuels.

The letter was addressed to ten individuals listed in a BlackRock filing as nominees to a board that oversees BlackRock closed-end mutual funds. Among other things, they said BlackRock fund trustees who serve as directors of companies where BlackRock owns more than 5% of shares could lead to independence concerns. They also cite how BlackRock fund directors are responsible for dozens of funds - exceeding BlackRock's own "overboarding" guideline for public company boards. Critics have raised similar issues in the past about whether well-paid mutual fund directors are positioned to speak up.

63 cruise ships owned by Carnival Corp. emitted more sulfur oxides than all the cars in Europe in 2022. The cruise industry is investing in alternative energy sources such as LNG fuel and shore power. Though the IMO rule slashes the sulfur emissions of individual ships, it has done nothing to limit the increasing number of cruise ships in recent years. Compared to 2019, cruise ships are also spending more time at European ports and consuming more fuel, per the report. As a result, cruise ships overall emitted 9% more sulfur oxides in 2022 than in 2017, according to Transport & Environment.

Scientists previously theorized that megalodons were warm-blooded, but the new study is the first to provide concrete evidence to that effect. From this finding, they deduced the megalodon’s average body temperature was about 27 C (80 F). Like modern great white and mako sharks, megalodons were regionally endothermic, which means they had the ability to regulate temperature in certain parts of the body, according to the study. The timing of megalodons’ extinction coincides with the cooling of the Earth’s temperature, the researchers said. But learning more about the ancient shark could still help scientists better understand the threats similar marine animals face today.

"It leverages the best available historical precipitation data that was available the time that the study was performed." It is not the only state using Atlas 14 to inform its infrastructure projects. "I can't speak to how some of those engineering decisions are made," Salas said when asked if Atlas 14 should still be used. There are multiple climate risk modeling firms with vast precipitation forecasting data, but most charge for it, and states already have the Atlas 14 data.

Led by Greenpeace, the activists were joined by local residents who say the Indian company's facility in the coastal city is responsible for high levels of heavy metals in nearby soils. One group of protesters used boats to hang a banner reading "Tata Steel, You Sicken Us" at the port where the facility receives coal and iron ore. The facility is under scrutiny by environmental agencies and prosecutors are investigating alleged intentional pollution of nearby groundwater, which Tata denies.

A charter boat captain found a whopping 6.25-inch long megalodon shark tooth in Florida. That's why today, the Sarasota County coastline in Venice, Florida, is known as the shark tooth capital of the world. Recently, a charter boat captain discovered one of the largest fossilized shark teeth ever from a megalodon shark. One of the largest megalodon teeth ever discoveredMichael Nastasio, who has been hunting shark teeth in Florida for 12 years, discovered a fully-intact megalodon shark tooth that was 6.25 inches (15.87 cm) long — only about an inch smaller than the largest megalodon tooth on record. Megalodon teeth are similar to great white shark teeth, and it's thought the two species may have been close relatives.

“When we started the program with the Bermuda snails at the zoo, we were just on the edge of extinction of the species,” says Garcia. The greater Bermuda land snail, whose shell measures up to 2.5 centimeters in diameter, shown alongside the lesser Bermuda snail. The hope is that the lesser land snail will follow the greater’s slimy trail. “We’ve been using the greater Bermuda land snail as the surrogate, or the research proxy, assuming that if they do well, the lesser Bermuda land snail will do as well,” says Outerbridge. Scientists have been reintroduced the greater and lesser Bermuda land snails across different islands in the archipelago.
