Capital Economics said weight-loss drugs could be game-changers for the world economy. Eventually, AI could supercharge the healthcare sector, so weight-loss drugs could be just the beginning. Capital Economics noted that share prices fell in 2023 for many fast-food companies as weight-loss drugs gained popularity, though some of those losses have since been pared. Weight-loss drugs and AIGLP-1 drugs' emergence, meanwhile, has happened alongside the explosion of artificial intelligence technology and hype. If so, the economic gains heralded by weight-loss drugs might be just the beginning."

While donations to charity have been rising, the pool of donors is shrinking, as philanthropy becomes hyper-concentrated among a small group of ultra-wealthy mega-donors, according to a new study. While women make up11% of the ultra-high-net-worth population, they account for 22% of the larger givers, according to the study. Today’s ultra-wealthy donors also prefer to give through private foundations and donor-advised funds — which give them more control — rather than simply writing checks to the Red Cross or United Way. The top charitable cause for ultra-wealthy donors was education (at 54%), according to Altrata. "There is some evidence that the ultra-high-net-worth population has different skews from the broader population," Pasic said.

The Food and Drug Administration on Thursday approved the first-ever treatment for a common and potentially deadly form of liver disease that affects millions worldwide. Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly are testing their respective blockbuster weight loss injections as treatments for the same kind of liver disease, called nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, or NASH. Madrigal's drug, which will be marketed as Rezdiffra, is specifically approved to treat patients with NASH who also have moderate-to-advanced liver scarring. NASH is a serious form of liver disease characterized by excess fat buildup and inflammation in the liver and can lead to liver scarring, also known as fibrosis, along with liver failure and liver cancer. Roughly 6 million to 8 million people in the U.S. have NASH with moderate-to-advanced liver scarring, according to an estimate cited by the FDA.

There may be a stronger case to invest in single stocks over exchange-traded funds in the weight loss space. With just two players currently at the forefront of the U.S. obesity drug market, ProShares' Simeon Hyman questions the relevance of weight loss ETFs for investors looking to buy into the industry. "If the benefits are going to incumbents, then maybe there isn't a theme per se that needs to be exploited." Strategas' Sohn also suggested that ETFs based on themes, rather than sectors or indices, might be falling out of favor with investors. So far in 2024, Novo Nordisk has gained 29% and Eli Lilly is up 30%, as of Wednesday's close.

Musk’s haphazard philanthropy is under scrutiny

As CEO of Tesla, “I’ve done more for the environment than any single human on Earth,” he told the New York Times last year. But American tax law dangles some significant incentives for them to do so. Musk likely managed to shave a couple billion off his $11 billion tax bill in 2021, thanks to the $5.7 billion he donated to the Musk Foundation, according to the Times. In Musk’s case, according to the Times, that meant giving millions of dollars to Cameron County, Texas. “The way I see Elon Musk is that he’s really pushing the limits of the alternative approaches to philanthropy,” Pasic said.

The S & P 500 Volatility Index finished the week near 15 and is in a clear three- month uptrend from its mid-December low near 12, even as the S & P 500 has gained 10% since then. In fact, Friday the market minimized the headline damage to a mere two-thirds-percent dip in the S & P 500 through its signature rotational impulse. Some indicators — such as speculators remaining net short S & P 500 futures and brokerage strategists' muted index targets — imply the helpful wall of worry is not quite fully scaled. Since then, the S & P has delivered a 16.7% annualized total return, even after two bear markets and two other severe/prolonged corrections. And the S & P is only up 7% from its high 26 months ago, hardly in thin air.

Eli Lilly headquarters in Indianapolis, Indiana, US, on Wednesday, May 3, 2023. Eli Lilly said Friday that the Food and Drug Administration has pushed back its approval decision deadline for the drugmaker's experimental Alzheimer's treatment donanemab in a surprise move. The agency plans to call a last-minute meeting of its outside advisors to further review the treatment's safety and efficacy in a late-stage trial, Eli Lilly said. It's another setback for Eli Lilly, which is racing to compete with Biogen and Eisai. In 2021, the FDA approved an earlier, ill-fated Alzheimer's drug called Aduhelm from Biogen and Eisai, despite a negative recommendation from the agency's advisory panel.

The approval also demonstrates that weight loss drugs have significant health benefits beyond shedding unwanted pounds and regulating blood sugar. The FDA said Wegovy patients should use Wegovy in addition to a reduced calorie diet and increased physical activity. Novo Nordisk expects to receive a similar Wegovy approval in the EU this year. The study tested Wegovy in roughly 17,500 people with obesity and heart disease but who did not have diabetes.

The Food and Drug Administration has decided to delay action on a closely watched Alzheimer’s drug, donanemab, which the agency was widely expected to approve this month. will instead require donanemab to undergo the scrutiny of a panel of independent experts, the drug’s maker, Eli Lilly and Company, said Friday. The decision is likely to surprise many Alzheimer’s experts, doctors and patients who had expected the medication would soon be on the market. The F.D.A.’s move was startling to the company, which had been planning for the agency to greenlight the drug during the first quarter of this year. “We were not expecting this,” Anne White, an executive vice president of Lilly and president of its neuroscience division, said in an interview.
