Opinion: Texas judge’s stunning ruling caps extraordinary week
  + stars: | 2023-04-09 | by ( ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +17 min
We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. Tennessee legislators targeted three members of the state House for joining a gun control protest in the chamber, expelling two young Black men while failing to oust a 60-year-old White woman. (He gave the Biden administration a week to appeal the ruling before it goes into effect. Thus, the week that began with Trump facing a judge in Manhattan ended with a Trump-appointed judge overturning more than two decades of medical practice. “They go far too fast to be safe on the sidewalk” and aren’t right for bike lanes or roads either.
Trump and his aides are far more concerned about the Georgia elections probe and the Mar-a-Lago case. She added that his aides are privately worried about the Mar-a-Lago case, which is "clearer-cut." "Some of his aides are very worried about the documents investigation that the Justice Department has," Haberman said. She added that the Mar-a-Lago case is a "clearer-cut issue" in comparison to the other investigations. In March, the conservative lawyer and pundit George Conway told Insider that of the cases Trump faces, he's most likely to face prison time over the Mar-a-Lago documents case.
WASHINGTON, April 6 (Reuters) - The U.S. Government Accountability Office on Thursday denied Lockheed Martin Corp's (LMT.N) protest of the Army contract for the Future Long Range-Assault Aircraft worth as much as a $7.1 billion, awarded to Textron Inc's (TXT.N) Bell helicopter unit over Lockheed's Sikorsky unit. The initial contract award was for $232 million, but the first batch of helicopters in low rate production will be worth $7.1 billion. Ultimately, the contract is potentially worth around $70 billion - over decades - depending on how many the Army and U.S. allies order, the Army has said. In the FLARAA competition was Bell's V-280 "Valor," a tiltrotor aircraft that has reached speeds in excess of 340 mph (547 kph) according to the Army. “We remain confident the Lockheed Martin Sikorsky and Boeing team submitted the most capable, affordable and lowest-risk Future Long-Range Assault Aircraft solution.
Trump delivered a defiant speech in Mar-a-Lago after his arraignment in New York on Tuesday. Trump allies like Roger Stone, Mike Lindell, Kari Lake, and Marjorie Taylor Greene were there. GOP lawmakers like Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz and Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene made it down to Mar-a-Lago to cheer Trump on. Greene — who earlier on Tuesday gave a short 10-minute speech at a mini pro-Trump protest in New York — tweeted about the Mar-a-Lago event. Trump on Tuesday was arrested in New York, and later in a Manhattan courtroom pleaded not guilty to 34 low-level felony charges.

Even last year returning to competitive golf at Augusta National 14 months after a car crash nearly resulted in the amputation of his right leg, a defiant Woods insisted he was there to win. But given the opportunity during his pre-Masters news conference, a reflective 15-time major winner was content to talk of "small victories". "I didn't win the tournament, but for me to be able to come back and play was a small victory in itself," Woods told reporters. "I just have to be cognizant of how much I can push it," said Woods. "I just think it's understanding, picking some guys' brains and figuring out what they need to do to win this tournament."
Trump looked unhappy as he sat in court waiting to hear the charges against him for the first time. The former president pleaded not guilty before New York Supreme Court Justice Juan Merchan. Trump faces 34 felony counts after a probe into a 2016 "hush-money" payment to Stormy Daniels. Trump pleaded not guilty before New York Supreme Court Justice Juan Merchan upon hearing the charges against in him in the 34-count felony indictment. Trump makes his way inside the Manhattan court before his arraignment.
Former President Donald Trump "should have smiled" for news cameras on Tuesday. Instead, photos from his court appearance projected "low energy," a crisis management expert told Insider"That's a visual that's going to live now and forever," the expert, Max Marcucci said. "He called Jeb Bush 'low energy,'" said Marcucci, who has advised clients on court appearances. Before his indictment, The New York Times reported Trump "mused openly" about whether he should smile for news cameras when making a court appearance. Given his performance Tuesday, Marcucci said, Trump's defense team appears to have their "unweildy client" under control.

[1/7] Skiers pass on an artificial snow slope as end of the ski season nears, in Monte Cimone, Italy, March 31, 2023. "The ski-lifts were closed, the ski instructors and seasonal workers had nothing to do and we lost 40% of our revenue for the whole season," said Luciano Magnani, head of the local consortium of ski tourism operators. Some 90% of Italy's pistes rely on artificial snow, compared with 70% in Austria, 50% in Switzerland and 39% in France, according to data from Italian Green lobby Legambiente. Italy's ski sector directly or indirectly employs 400,000 people and generates turnover of 11 billion euros ($11.92 billion), according to Anef data, equal to about 0.5% of national output. Some economists and climatologists argue that trying to keep low-altitude ski resorts in business is destined to fail, and snow-making merely delays the inevitable.

Trump is reportedly wondering if he should smile for his perp walk and whether he can be handcuffed. Crisis communicators say "yes" to the smile and "no" to cuffs if he is indicted in New York. If prosecutors decide to march him in front of news cameras for a "perp walk," should he smile? But it's unlikely that the Manhattan district attorney's office will arrange a perp walk for Trump if he's indicted and turns himself in. In that case, Marcucci said he could see Trump organizing a perp walk on his own.
Alvin Bragg's office responded to House GOP demands that he testify about his investigation of Trump. The DA is investigating Trump's role in a hush-money payment made during his 2016 campaign. The lawmakers, who chair the powerful House judiciary, oversight and administration committees, said a possible indictment of Trump by Bragg would be "an unprecedented abuse of prosecutorial authority." Trump has denied the affair with Daniels and any wrongdoing related to the payment. Legal experts say it's unlikely that Bragg would appear before House lawmakers to testify about the investigation, largely because it remains ongoing.

The Russian leader visited besieged areas that have faced widespread casualties since the invasion began. The trip comes after the International Criminal Court issued a warrant for his arrest for war crimes. According to Russian state-sponsored media outlet Tass, Putin then visited Mariupol early Sunday in his first-ever visit to the Donbas region. During Putin's visit to the region, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin began creating a report about reconstruction efforts in the city and its outskirts, Tass reported.
In a year, the metaverse went from Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg's obsession to rarely being mentioned. He mentioned AI four times, positioning the development of that technology as now being Meta's "single largest investment." Executives mentioned it half a dozen times during a call with Wall Street analysts, while the metaverse was not mentioned at all. It's a relief to investors and Wall Street analysts, who last year grew increasingly frustrated with Zuckerberg's once defiant tone on the massive cost of metaverse work. It's set to lose $15 billion this year and is on track to cost the company $20 billion a year going forward.
Mark Zuckerberg said the layoffs are a part of the company's "Year of Efficiency." Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the cuts were necessary to improve the company's "financial performance in a difficult environment." In his message to employees, Zuckerberg warned that the company might be looking to pare down expenses for some time to come. With the new cuts, Meta's headcount is closer to where it was two years ago. While the breadth of the November layoffs came as a surprise to many Meta employees, this second round has been expected internally since at least January, as Insider first reported.
HONG KONG, March 11 (Reuters) - Three former members of a Hong Kong group that organised annual vigils to mark China's 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown, were jailed on Saturday for four and a half months for not complying with a national security police request for information. Chow Hang-tung, 38, a prominent Hong Kong pro-democracy activist and former vice-chairperson of the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements in China, was among those convicted by a magistrate's court. The now-disbanded Alliance was the main organiser of Hong Kong's June 4 candlelight vigil for victims of China's Tiananmen Square crackdown. The national security law, which punishes acts including subversion and collusion with foreign forces, has been criticised by some Western governments as a tool to crush dissent. The Hong Kong and Chinese governments say the law had brought stability since it was enacted in 2020 in response to mass pro-democracy protests in 2019.
The junta has previously denied holding political prisoners, saying people in jail broke the law and were sentenced after due legal process. "During that incident, more than 100 female political prisoners were seriously injured including a broken arm, eye injuries and facial bruises," the note said. The activists, lawyers and family members interviewed by Reuters asked not to be identified for fear of repercussions as they are working inside Myanmar. "As these people are women prisoners, they have to be handled by women prison guards. The anti-junta group and two Mandalay-based lawyers who work with political prisoners said those involved in the violence were also denied medical care.

That independent streak includes opposing a sweeping House GOP immigration proposal over the U.S.-Mexico border, which includes a large portion of his South Texas district. Gonzales was defiant before the vote and did not attend the meeting of Texas GOP leaders and activists in Austin. "The Republican Party of Texas would be wise to follow his lead and do some actual work." Last year, former Texas GOP Chairman Allen West stepped down from the job to mount a faint primary challenge against Republican Gov. The state party in 2018 also censured a former moderate Texas House speaker who opposed bathroom restrictions for transgender people.
LONDON, March 3 (Reuters) - British former Prime Minister Boris Johnson will give evidence later this month to an inquiry into whether he intentionally misled parliament about illegal parties at his Downing Street office and residence during COVID-19 lockdowns. "Mr Johnson has accepted the Committee's invitation to give oral evidence in public in the week beginning 20 March," the Committee of Privileges said in a statement. He argues he was not aware that any of the events taking place at Downing Street broke COVID-19 rules. 'OBVIOUS'The committee said the evidence "strongly suggests that breaches of guidance would have been obvious" to Johnson at the time he was at the gatherings. There is evidence that those who were advising Johnson were concerned he was breaking the rules, it added.

A young mother still searches for her missing husband. A sign-maker turned soldier fights on the front line despite injuries. A grandmother remains displaced from her longtime home. Ukrainians have been defiant in the face of the Russian invasion, with their country maintaining its sovereignty and beating back advances by its much larger neighbor. Their resilience over the past year has come at a high cost, however, with millions of people displaced, thousands killed and parts of the country destroyed.
Some background: The Covid-19 crisis triggered a sudden shift in student loan policy and a new openness to forgiveness. About 40% of those with federal student loan debt would have a zero balance; even more would have a much smaller monthly payment. But, “if payments resume without debt relief, we expect both student loan default and delinquencies to rise and potentially surpass pre-pandemic levels,” warned Fed researchers. Those missed payments suggest that some federal student loan borrowers are having trouble meeting their monthly debt obligations. “We expect these delinquency patterns to worsen if federal student loan payments resume without relief,” said the report.
