After years of delay, Google says it will no longer cancel and replace third-party cookies — a practice long used by advertisers — for its internet browser Chrome. Cookies are small pieces of code that websites deliver to a visitor's browser and stick around as the person visits other sites. To do so, Google launched its "Privacy Sandbox" initiative to find a solution that protects user privacy and lets content remain freely available on the open web. But in June 2021, Google pushed back the timeline, giving the digital advertising industry more time to iron out plans for more privacy-conscious targeted ads. In a blog post on Monday, the company said it has received feedback, from both advertisers and regulators, that informed its latest decision to cancel the plan to kill off third-party cookies in its browser.

CNN —The US Secret Service pushed back Thursday against recent criticism from right-wing media personalities and lawmakers blaming female agents for security failures during the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. In a statement Thursday to CNN, the Secret Service blasted misogynist claims that the female agents were incapable of protecting Trump. CNN —American citizen Travis Leake has been sentenced to 13 years in a penal colony in Russia, state media RIA Novosti reported Thursday, after he was detained on drug charges last year. A Moscow court had accused the “former paratrooper and musician” of engaging in a narcotics business, according to RIA. Leake pleaded not guilty to the charges, Russian state media TASS said. From January to June 2023, Leake allegedly purchased narcotic drugs from an accomplice in another criminal case, Russian state media reported, citing Moscow’s prosecutor’s office. A second person involved in the case was also found guilty and sentenced to time in a penal colony, Russian state media reported Thursday.

A former Goldman Sachs and Blackstone analyst was sentenced to 28 months in prison Wednesday for insider trading, after admitting that his conduct was “catastrophically stupid.”Anthony Viggiano, 27, of Baldwin, New York, was sentenced by US District Judge Valerie Caproni in Manhattan, after pleading guilty in January to securities fraud. Viggiano was accused of passing tips on eight planned corporate mergers and partnerships between 2021 and 2023 to college friend Stephen Forlano and construction sales representative Christopher Salamone, a childhood neighbor. Forlano passed some tips to a US Army captain he was friends with, prosecutors added. The eight transactions included American International Group’s sale of part of a business to Blackstone and the purchase of satellite operator Maxar Technologies by private equity firm Advent International, a Goldman client. Salamone’s sentencing is on August 20, while the Army captain was not criminally charged.
