REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsCompanies Meta Platforms Inc FollowWASHINGTON, Oct 17 (Reuters) - Lawyers for Meta (META.O), which owns Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, and the U.S. government tangled on Tuesday over the U.S. Federal Trade Commission's plan to toughen a 2019 privacy order. Speaking for Meta on Tuesday, James Rouhandeh argued that Judge Timothy Kelly of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia had jurisdiction to take the case and should scrap the FTC's proposal because Meta had not agreed to it. Arguing for the FTC, Zachary Cowan of the Justice Department said that it was the agency's decision on whether its settlements should be changed and the district court had no jurisdiction. Essentially, the fight is whether Meta and the FTC, if they fail to settle, will go to district court or an FTC judge to decide if the 2019 agreement will be modified.

The very idea of Cummins being on the chopping block was mystifying to legspinner Zampa, who was adamant there was no heat coming from within the team. The first concern for those looking to leave Israel was when departing flights would resume, followed by the frustrations of actually booking the flight. Documents to travel with pets were not being processed to any country but the United States, she told CNN, but flight prices were skyrocketing into the thousands. “As we were boarding — because it was so manic — 10 or so people just went past the crew member,” they told CNN. Others looking to leave Israel detailed hearing misinformation about rocket strikes destroying the airport. Those people who are from the embassy that are at the airport, they’re super tired, and they’re really, really trying their best,” the Polish tourist told CNN.

CNN —Australia issued a fine of $610,500 Australian dollars ($386,000) on Monday against the company formerly known as Twitter for “falling short” in disclosing information on how it tackles child sex abuse content, in yet another setback for the Elon Musk-owned social media platform. Just days earlier, the European Commission formally opened an investigation into X after issuing a previous warning about disinformation and illegal content on its platform linked to the Israel-Hamas war. Australia’s e-Safety Commission, the online safety regulator, said in a statement Monday that X had failed to adequately respond to a number of questions about the way it was dealing with the problem of child abuse materials. X did not immediately respond to a request for comment by CNN. The American tech giant has been given a formal warning to deter it from future non-compliance, it added.

Opinion: Where the war goes from here
  + stars: | 2023-10-15 | by ( Richard Galant | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +19 min
We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. The war plays out on everyone’s screens, forcing people to confront cruelty and killing and to fear what comes next. “Hamas’ mission is, by definition, to end Israel, not to seek to establish a self-governed Palestinian state that peacefully coexists alongside the Jewish state. “An Israeli normalization deal with Saudi Arabia — the location of the two holiest sites in Islam — would be hugely symbolic and have real security benefits for Israel,” wrote Peter Bergen. “After all, almost exactly half a century ago, during the 1973 Yom Kippur War, two Arab states, Egypt and Syria, attacked Israel.

Israel, in response, ordered a “complete siege” of Gaza, including cutting off food, water and fuel, while unleashing its heaviest ever airstrikes on the blockaded enclave. At least 2,215 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza from Israeli strikes, the Palestinian Ministry of Health said Saturday. A hospital in Gaza had to use ice cream trucks as makeshift morgues because of the growing number of bodies. His five family members – four cousins and his aunt – stopped responding to the family’s WhatsApp group at some point. For many Palestinian Americans, there’s a sense of helplessness and hopelessness as they struggle to hear from loved ones in Gaza. But even before this week, getting to Gaza to visit family for Palestinian Americans was a lengthy, exhausting and difficult experience, and most people who live Gaza can never leave. Within days of the Hamas attack on Israel, Gabi Chutter went from working at a private elementary school to supervising a hastily set up warehouse on Long Island, where dozens of volunteers received donated tactical gear and humanitarian supplies to send to Israeli soldiers. The 25-year-old, who has first-responder training and relatives in Israel, wanted to fly to Israel after last weekend’s violence but instead joined a local effort to get items to troops on the ground, leveraging newly formed WhatsApp groups and word-of-mouth. The group Chutter joined started small, asking volunteers to drop off bags of supplies at a Long Island home. It was organized by friends of a man killed in Israel and a New York-based family with two sons in Israel.

Cheap, second-hand, and purloined weapons comprised Hamas’ deadly makeshift arsenal that fueled a devastating, multi-pronged attack on Israel over the weekend. CNN analyzed dozens of photos and videos of Hamas militants during the surprise assault to identify the weapons used to kill at least 1,200 people in Israel. In previous battles with Israel, Hamas was known to have fired rockets made of old water pipes, the researcher noted. Cyber aggression in Israel escalated Wednesday night. Hackers infiltrated Israel’s smart billboards, posting pro-Hamas messages and images, according to cybersecurity company Check Point Software Technologies. Israelis are receiving threatening texts on their phones and WhatsApp messages from numbers in Yemen and Afghanistan, Check Point said. Attempts to access Israel’s industrial systems have jumped in the last day or so, said Yossi Appleboum, chief executive of cyber company Sepio. The activity, so far unsuccessful in penetrating the networks, has come from Iran, Syria and pro-Russia hacktivist group Killnet, Appleboum said.

But when Israel called up its reservists and declared war this week, the response was swift and overwhelming. Most reservists were already in Israel at the time of the call-up - the largest such compulsory mobilisation since the 1973 Yom Kippur War. But many were out of the country, for a variety of reasons, and dropped everything to rush back. "I cannot sit here and study medicine while I know that my friends are fighting and my family needs protection. CNN —A split-second decision to run and hide in an orange grove could be the very thing that saved 22-year-old Gal Katz’s life, after Hamas militants unleashed a harrowing assault on an Israeli music festival in the early hours of Saturday. As gunmen approached, festival-goer Katz and a friend fled for the nearby grove, where they hid for around six hours. Katz’s other friends at the festival, however, did not survive — killed by terrorists who found them inside a security shelter. I figured if it was something serious, [music festival security] would end the party and tell us what to do.
