Former Vice President Mike Pence at the US Capitol on May 16, 2024. This despite history suggesting that, at some point in their potential mandate, a possible President Trump might ask them to so something that tests their consciences, the law or the Constitution. The attractiveness of the vice presidential nomination may reflect Trump’s magnetism and the heady euphoria of being a key player in the “Make America Great Again” movement. He has also made clear to Trump that he wouldn’t have adopted Pence’s interpretation of the constitutional limits on vice presidential powers. Burgum has taken a classic route of parlaying an unsuccessful presidential campaign into a spot in the vice presidential derby.

Meetings between Spain and Italy rarely disappoint and this one was no exception — even if it was an own goal that decided the contest. Victory sees Spain progress to the knockout stage as group winners, while for Italy it’s all to play for against Croatia on Monday. The one-way traffic continued after half-time, and Spain got to 11 efforts at goal without finding the net. Some will focus on Donnarumma pushing Morata’s header into a helpless Calafiori’s path for Spain’s goal. CNN —Chinese Premier Li Qiang’s four-day visit to Australia this week was set to be focused on repairing long-strained relations between the two countries. Opinion: European soccer’s latest racism row

CNN —On Sunday, England will face Serbia in its first game of the Euro 2024 championship, hosted by Germany. Since then, the FA, the European football association UEFA and FIFA , the sport’s international governing body, have visibly upped their anti-racism game. One might conclude, for instance, that Monday’s court decision in Spain meting out prison sentences to three Valencia fans for hurling racial insults, is evidence of European soccer’s new, tougher line against racism. Saka knows UEFA observers will be on duty at every Euro 2024 match and will be on the lookout for racist incidents. I see it as an attempt by professionals who should know better to make a Black player carry the can for a disappointing performance by the whole team.

Holly Thomas Holly ThomasIt’s not that Penelope Featherington and Colin Bridgerton (or Polin, as the internet insists on calling them) don’t make an arresting couple. The first deliciously familiar moment comes in episode 5, when Eloise Bridgerton offloads to Cressida Cowper, her cynical replacement for her estranged best friend, Penelope, about Penelope. As Eloise finally draws breath, Cressida mentions that she’s “had a shock of my own,” actually. In keeping with Season 3’s somewhat aromantic vibe, its most touching relationship isn’t between Penelope and Colin, but Penelope and her mother. While the series’ attempt to paint Penelope’s Lady Whistledown column as a feminist outpost feels a bit forced, Lady Featherington’s belated appreciation of her daughter’s abilities is far more affecting.

In his first reaction to the verdict, Hunter Biden didn’t attack the judge or prosecutors, simply saying he was grateful for the love and support of his family and blessed to be clean again. The Hunter Biden verdict also contradicted the central rationale of Trump’s multiple legal defenses in his four criminal cases, several civil matters and his entire presidential campaign. “So much for the weaponization of the Justice Department to go after just the enemies of the other side,” Michael Zeldin, a former senior Justice Department official and federal prosecutor, said on CNN Max on Tuesday. Stephen Miller, Trump’s former White House domestic policy adviser, argued that the Justice Department had actually shown favoritism toward Hunter Biden by not charging him with 50 felonies over foreign influence peddling. “Hunter Biden just became the Deep State’s sacrificial lamb to show that Justice is ‘balanced’ while the other Biden crimes remain ignored,” she wrote on X.

Then, three healthy ferrets were placed in the same enclosures with three of the sick animals. These animals could touch, nose and lick the sick animals, and all of them became ill.Next, the CDC tested airborne transmission by putting three healthy ferrets into an enclosure where they could breathe the same air as sick animals but couldn’t touch them. In her lab, ferrets with previous exposures to seasonal flu strains didn’t get as sick when exposed to new flu viruses compared to those with no prior exposure to seasonal strains. How much help we might get from past exposures to flu viruses is difficult to predict, however, which is why vaccination would still be important to tune up our immunity. They never spread the virus to any of the other animals in the facility — including themselves.

When Ashley de Azevedo married in 2012, she knew that her U.S. citizenship would make her husband, an immigrant from Brazil, eligible for a green card. What she didn’t realize was that to obtain permanent residency, he would need to return to Brazil for 10 years because he had entered the United States illegally. “It was a devastating reality,” Ms. Azevedo, 38 said. “I was pregnant, and he would miss out on years of our child’s life.”So Mr. Azevedo stayed in the United States, vulnerable to deportation but with his wife and his son, who’s 12. Over the last three years, a new class of Alzheimer’s drug, the first to treat a root cause of the disease, has set off a roller coaster of hope and disappointment. Lecanemab (brand name Leqembi; pronounced le-KEM-bee) was given full approval by the Food and Drug Administration in July 2023 and is currently the only one of its class available to Alzheimer’s patients, outside clinical trials. The drug has been shown to slow the progression of the disease, but its benefits are fairly modest. With lecanemab having been approved for nearly a year — and with a similar drug, donanemab, being reviewed by an F.D.A. There are strict requirements for patients to be eligible for lecanemab; by one estimate, fewer than 20 percent met the qualifications for the medication.

As high prices at grocery stores, gas pumps and pharmacies have soured many voters on his first term, President Biden has developed a populist riposte: Blame big corporations for inflation, not me. Now, some progressives are urging Mr. Biden to follow those senators’ lead and make “greedflation,” as they call it, a driving theme of his re-election bid. And they believe polls show voters are primed to hear the president condemn big corporations in more forceful terms. “It’s a winning message for Democrats,” said April Verrett, the president of the Service Employees International Union, which is knocking on doors in battleground states as part of a $200 million voter-turnout operation. “And clearly Bob Casey, who’s doing better in the polls than the president, is proving that it’s the winning message.”
