A recent report highlighted the pay penalty between teachers and college graduates in other roles. The author found this pay penalty was at a record in 2022 when controlling for education and other factors. There's also a total compensation penalty for teachers when factoring in benefits like healthcare and retirement plans. Before the pandemic, the total compensation penalty was 10.2% in 2019 — with a benefits advantage of 9.0% and a wage penalty of 19.2%. At the same time teachers face a pay penalty, many use what they make to buy supplies and other items for their classrooms.

How Jesmyn Ward Is Reimagining Southern Literature
  + stars: | 2023-10-13 | by ( Imani Perry | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +5 min
Ward is classically beautiful — delicate and golden-skinned with her hair hanging in long curls. The town is important to Ward for another reason, though: Her great-grandfather Harry was the son of a white mother, Edna. Ward borrowed her family’s complex racial history in writing “Sing, Unburied, Sing.” That family history tells us something about how Ward thinks about history and its relationship to her fiction. The contours of Ward’s life were formed by two hurricanes. In 1969, Hurricane Camille struck, marking a terrible watershed in Black life on the Gulf Coast.

Speaking from the IMF World Bank annual meeting in Marrakech, Nagel said we shouldn't compare Germany's current economic situation with the period when it was last described as "the sick man." "It's a completely different, different situation," Nagel said. "I believe there is that understanding that we need to do something, but we are not the sick man of Europe," he added. Debate has sparked over whether Germany should once more be described as the "sick man," after Europe's largest economy was predicted to be the only major European economy to contract in 2023.

Palestinians break into the Israeli side of Israel-Gaza border fence after gunmen infiltrated areas of southern Israel, October 7, 2023. REUTERS/Mohammed Fayq Abu Mostafa Acquire Licensing RightsWASHINGTON, Oct 11 (Reuters) - Iran likely knew that Palestinian Hamas militants were planning "operations against Israel" but initial U.S. intelligence reports show that some Iranian leaders were surprised by the Islamist group's unprecedented attack from Gaza, U.S. sources said on Wednesday. Those Iranian officials would ordinarily have been informed about such a massive operation by Hamas, which Tehran has long supported with weapons and funds, according to a person familiar with the intelligence. The source familiar with the intelligence told Reuters that U.S. intelligence agencies were still digging for any evidence of Iranian involvement as well as reviewing older intelligence for clues. Retaliatory Israeli strikes have killed 1,055 people and wounded more than 5,100, Gaza's Hamas authorities said.

Hamas upended the stability of the entire Middle East when its militants surged into Israel from the Gaza Strip on Oct. 7. Israelis across the political spectrum were shocked by the scale of the assault and the extent of the violence. Some called it Israel’s 9/11 for how some of the world’s best trained and equipped security forces were caught unprepared and powerless to ward off the incursions. Israeli authorities said at least 1,200 people have died since the Hamas attacks began. Dozens of others were taken hostage.

Israeli tanks were deployed in the far northern border town of Metulla as rain came down near the heavily fortified border. Six people were killed on Monday - three Hezbollah members, an Israeli officer, and two Palestinian militants who touched off the violence by infiltrating Israel from Lebanon. A storm put many people in Lebanon on edge as thunder was mistaken for Israeli bombardment. Lebanon took years to rebuild from the 2006 war, during which Israeli bombardment pounded Hezbollah-controlled south Lebanon and destroyed wide areas of its stronghold in the southern suburbs of Beirut. Lebanon can ill-afford another big war with Israel, four years into a financial meltdown that has spread impoverishment and paralysed state institutions.

CNN —The late singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett has an unsuspecting figure to add to his legacy — a newly discovered species of sea snail found in the Florida Reef. “This is a rather charismatic little snail that can show us how little we know about the biological diversity around us,” Bieler said. The little snail’s bright color caught researchers’ attention. The Cayo snails, however, are currently believed to be local and not invasive, Bieler said. “We’re seeing that these worm snails are making good use of this newly freed up real estate because the coral reefs are so stressed.”

Adenovirus (highly contagious virus causing lymphadenopathy symptomatizing swelling of the glands in the neck, accompanied by a cold, or pharyngitis, or bronchitis, sometimes also conjunctivitis, keratitis, or a combination of the two (keratoconjunctivitis). LONDON — A U.K. study showed that symptoms of a cold can linger well beyond the main period of illness, suggesting that rather like "long Covid," "long colds" can also exist. The study, published Friday in scientific journal The Lancet, showed that non-Covid infections can be associated with a range of illnesses more than four weeks after the initial infection. After studying 10,171 participants, scientists at the Queen Mary University of London concluded that there may be long-lasting health impacts from other respiratory infections, such as the common cold, that are unrecognized. They were unable to say whether the symptoms of "long colds" would last as long as those of "long Covid."
