Read previewThis as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Elly Ross, a head of product at an e-commerce company who is starting her own candy shop, "lil sweet treat." I was going on a walk to lunch one day and I passed by the unit that is now "lil sweet treat" — and I immediately knew that this was the spot for the candy shop. Product management skills in the candy shop worldA lot of the skills that I cultivated as a PM have been so helpful in building "lil sweet treat." When you buy this large amount of candy, you have to transfer that candy from one of the candy store bags into another vessel at home. Every time that your shopper reaches for a sweet treat, they see the "lil sweet treat" branding associate that sweet treat with "lil sweet treat."

In today's big story, viewers are opting for free TV, and that's throwing a massive wrench in Hollywood's plans . AdvertisementBut first, what's on (free) TV? The big storyChanging channelsGetty Images; iStock; Natalie Ammari/BIIf the best things in life truly are free, Hollywood is about to learn a brutal lesson. But what's really caught people's attention over the past year has been "free, ad-supported TV" or FAST services. Figuring out how to make money from free TV is a big enough problem.

New York CNN —For months, former President Donald Trump has been sitting on a social media fortune that he couldn’t touch. As recently as May 9, Trump’s dominant stake of 114.75 million shares of Trump Media was valued at $6.2 billion. Despite the recent selloff, Trump Media is still valued at nearly $4 billion. Once the lock-up period expires, Trump will no longer be prohibited from borrowing against his stake in Trump Media. Experts say that if Trump does borrow against his Truth Social stake, he may not be required to disclose it.

The basic problem: It's unclear how these free services could support new, Hollywood-style programming even if they wanted to. Now, with YouTube making the jump to TV screens and "free, ad-supported TV" (FAST) services having a moment, where does that leave Hollywood? Tech and legacy media will battle over free TV in the coming monthsLooking ahead, the major players already ahead in free TV will likely continue to gain share. Free streaming may seem like a way for Hollywood to claw back viewers. If not, it's hard to say what winning in the battle for free TV will actually get them.

Google said it will soon allow users to create images of people using its Gemini artificial intelligence tool, after pulling the AI image generation option in February. "We've worked to make technical improvements to the product, as well as improved evaluation sets, red-teaming exercises and clear product principles," Citron wrote. Google paused its image generation feature earlier this year after saying it was offering "inaccuracies" in historical pictures. "Of course, as with any generative AI tool, not every image Gemini creates will be perfect, but we'll continue to listen to feedback from early users as we keep improving," Citron wrote. "We'll gradually roll this out, aiming to bring it to more users and languages soon."

Salesforce shares jumped more than 4% in extended trading Wednesday after the enterprise software giant beat sales and earnings expectations in the second quarter. Salesforce Why we own it : Salesforce is a leading enterprise software tool for companies across all industries, helping employees to better communicate with colleagues internally and with their customers. Salesforce's new AI tools — which it is calling autonomous AI sales agents — may be the company's answer to this negative thesis. The next task for Salesforce is proving these new AI products will become a material driver of revenue growth. For the third quarter, Salesforce forecasts revenues of $9.31 billion to $9.36 billion, which is below the $9.4 billion estimate.

Lam aims to change that with NEX, which develops AI image tools for entertainment, gaming, and marketing. Founded in late 2023, the company recently raised a $3.5 million seed round led by Foundation Capital, with participation from Point72 Ventures. NEX does this by enabling users to generate images inspired by other images, not just text inputs, in a "real-time canvas." The startup's tech can also tailor the AI models based on a customer's existing data, a process called finetuning, or even develop models from scratch. Lam's vision for NEX is to be the "visual media tool for the AI era."

New York CNN —The arrest of Telegram CEO Pavel Durov in France over the weekend has thrust the popular messaging service and its enigmatic founderinto the spotlight. Durov’s arrest comes as the app has faced growing scrutiny for its use by terrorist groups and far-right extremists. Telegram is an encrypted messaging service that was launched in 2013 by Durov and his brother, Nikolai. And earlier this month, the messaging app began actively removing calls to violence from the platform following reports that the app was being used to organize far-right, anti-immigrant riots in the United Kingdom. In addition to running Telegram, Durov has become something of an online influencer, sharing images on Instagram of his world travels (and, often, shirtless photos).

The campaign began earlier this year and stopped before President Joe Biden dropped out of the presidential race last month, a Meta spokesperson said. The WhatsApp accounts claimed to be tech support for companies like AOL, Google, Yahoo and Microsoft, according to a Meta blog post. The same WhatsApp campaign also targeted users in Iran, Israel, Palestine and the United Kingdom, Meta said. However, the company would not necessarily know if a victim fell for the WhatsApp messages and gave the hackers valuable information that enabled access to their account. It’s unclear whether or how more of the hacked Trump files will surface before Election Day.

Spokesperson Jillian Cowherd said the voter registration process is started at the DMV, but completed at the Virginia Elections Department. It’s also used to verify voter rolls. The agency also said that it was under the initiative of Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Oli, who issued a directive saying that all social networking sites should be treated equally. Oli became the prime minister last month after the collapse of the previous coalition government. The previous government had imposed the ban on TikTok in November last year, saying it was necessary to regulate the use of the social media platform because it was disrupting social harmony and goodwill and diffusing indecent materials. The government has also asked social media platforms companies to register in Nepal, open a liaison office, pay taxes and abide by the country’s laws and regulations. But there was one statistic that made my head spin: 31% of 7- to 9-year-olds use the X (Twitter) app. Parents might be the ones actually using X — and Amazon ShoppingI reached out to Qustodio to ask how to interpret this bizarre number. I asked if perhaps this could be because a child was using a device that they shared with a grown-up. But the X app doesn't let you see tweets if you're not logged in, so it's not actually so easy to accidentally surf around. I don't think Qustodio just invented some fake numbers.

At least, that's what data security experts like Matt Radolec, vice president of incident response at data security company Varonis, say. "Copilots have pass-through permissions," Radolec said. There's also value in proceeding at a slow and steady pace with gen AI processes. Instead, Ensono is developing its own tool so the company can better enable and control its data security. While locking their credit won't solve all cybersecurity issues related to stolen Social Security numbers, it's one extra layer of protection parents can implement. Parents can take these steps proactively even if there's nothing to suggest a minor's credit has been compromised such as unexpected credit card solicitations or bills received in the minor's name. It can take some time and effort to lock a child's credit, but the outlay is minimal compared with what can be a lengthy and emotional credit restoration process. Locking a child's credit won't protect against all of these, but it's a solid step in the right direction, financial professionals said. To check to see if their child has a credit report, parents can mail a letter with their request to each of the credit bureaus.
