The education gap grows“The biggest single, best predictor of how someone’s going to vote in American politics now is education level. The real swing votersTo the extent that traditional swing voters are persuadable in this election, Sosnik argued they might be people like political independents or Nikki Haley Republicans. But there’s a second group of swing voters Sosnik argued is even more important. For Trump, these are non-college-educated White voters in general, particularly men, who “if they vote, you know they’re going to vote for Trump,” he said. Young voters, who are less reliable to cast ballots, also fall into this second type of swing voters, Sosnik said.

Attorneys general in 14 different states filed lawsuits against TikTok last week. The suits mirror earlier ones against Big Tobacco and Purdue Pharma, legal experts told BI. The Sackler family, owners of Purdue Pharma, ultimately paid over $3 billion in settlements for misleading advertising related to their products. Purdue Pharma later filed for bankruptcy, but the Supreme Court struck down a $7 billion bankruptcy plan in June that would have given the Sackler's immunity from future civil suits. With the prospect of that federal ban looming next year, a slew of federal lawsuits helps shape public opinion and "pressure lawmakers to act," Rahmani said.

Even as swing-seat Republicans attempt to paint a more nuanced view of the GOP’s stance on abortion, the national party has often muddled that message. “You can’t hide from it,” said Rep. Kelly Armstrong, a Republican from North Dakota, reflecting on the lessons Republicans learned in the 2022 midterms. Hudson accused Democrats of “creating a false and distorted impression” of the GOP’s abortion position in the 2022 midterms and attacked Democrats for espousing their own “extreme” views on the issue. Since then, Chamberlain has used her own polling to help convince key swing-seat House Republicans to shift their approach. “This is a desperation move by Republicans,” said House Democrats’ campaign chief, Rep. Suzan DelBene of Washington state.

The inmate’s attorneys call that a misdiagnosis – and also discredit shaken baby syndrome on its face, despite broad consensus among pediatricians it is legitimate. The shaken baby syndrome diagnosis from doctors and nurses, their emotional response to Nikki’s condition and Roberson’s odd reaction all stacked against the then-suspect, said Wharton. “There really is not a controversy in medicine about the existence of abusive head trauma. But the surveys also reveal a noticeable gap in support between the pro-abortion rights amendments and the Democratic presidential and Senate candidates who are campaigning on a pro-abortion rights platform. Pro-abortion rights ballot measures won in every state where they appeared on the ballot, including conservative-leaning ones, in the 2022 and 2023 elections. Similarly in Arizona, a proposed amendment to enshrine abortion rights in the state’s constitution has clear majority support. In Montana, there’s little evidence that the presence of an abortion rights amendment has had a major effect on the race between three-term Democratic Sen. Jon Tester and Republican challenger Tim Sheehy. For example, in Missouri, public polling indicates broad support for a constitutional amendment to enshrine abortion rights, while Republican Sen. Josh Hawley and Trump hold strong leads in their races.

Abortion and immigration are driving factors in the election in all corners of the country, but the issues are colliding in Arizona like few other battlegrounds. The Supreme Court may soon consider two cases that could dismantle limits on how close protesters can be to people at abortion clinics and other health care facilities. Since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, three abortion clinics have opened in Carbondale. “You can’t have protests on the steps of the Supreme Court,” he said. Neither petition has been scheduled to be discussed by the Supreme Court justices. DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Bracing itself for a retaliatory strike for last week’s ballistic missile attack, Iran has been urging its Arab neighbors not to allow Israel to use their airspace as part of any potential attack, two diplomats from Gulf nations told NBC News Friday. Israel has vowed to respond to the strikes and while the nature and timing of the attack remain unclear, Iran warned countries that do help Israel in any way could potentially become part of a war, one of the diplomats said. His death came days after several Hezbollah leaders were killed by exploding pagers and walkie-talkies, an attack which Israel was widely believed to have been behind. Both militant groups are backed by Tehran and Pezeshkian has portrayed Iran as “exercising restraint” because it waited for two months after Haniyeh's death before launching the attack on Israel. NBC News has reached out to the Israel Defense Forces for comment but has not received a response.

— In their first and only debate of an unusually competitive Maryland Senate race Thursday, Prince George's County Executive Angela Alsobrooks and former Gov. Larry Hogan sparred over the issue of abortion and whether the deep blue state would be best represented by a staunch Democrat or an anti-Donald Trump Republican. Hogan distanced himself from the former president and current GOP presidential nominee, framing himself as someone willing to put "country over party." Alsobrooks dismissed that frame, arguing that a vote for Hogan would mean a vote for a Senate Republican majority that would threaten abortion rights and support for Ukraine. Hogan criticized Alsobrooks and "both sides" of the aisle for "trying to change the rules so they can pack the court."

The government’s written affidavit is its clearest position yet on the issue of marital rape in India. “It speaks to India’s acceptance of sexual violence in our culture,” said Ntasha Bhardwaj, a criminal justice and gender scholar. Attorneys for Donald Trump on Thursday argued against the release of additional evidence in the former president's federal election interference case in the lead up to Election Day. A spokesperson for the special counsel’s office declined to comment on the filing. Prosecutors from Smith's office had previously rebuffed assertions from Trump's attorneys that the government was "motivated by improper political considerations." The federal election case was upended after the Supreme Court’s immunity ruling which found that Trump has some protection from prosecution related to official acts. A judge overseeing that case last month granted the former president's request to further postpone his sentencing hearing until after Election Day.

One measure on the ballot in New York state this November means two very different things to its supporters and its opponents. Advocates of the measure argue that it is simply a way to codify New Yorkers’ right to reproductive care. The Coalition to Protect Kids-NY has taken to calling the measure the “Parent Replacement Act.” The group argues that the measure would be used to strip rights from parents and push transgender rights for minors, in particular. The coalition's website includes no articles or other information about the ballot measure seeking to codify a right to abortion. Hochul’s office has helped lead the state’s Democratic Party to spend over $1 million to advertise in favor of the measure, including local ads, campaign yard signs and mailers.

The Harris campaign did not specify where and when she bought the Glock, which model she owns or which storage devices she uses. Lower courts in Colorado had concluded that Masterpiece Cakeshop and the bakery’s owner, Jack Phillips, had violated Autumn Scardina’s rights by refusing to make her a pink cake with blue frosting because of her identity as a transgender woman. Scardina had initially filed a discrimination complaint with the Colorado Civil Rights Division after Phillips refused to make the cake she wanted to order to celebrate her birthday and her identity as a transgender woman. Justice Melissa Hart, writing for the majority, said Scardina should have challenged that decision in an appeals court, rather than file a new lawsuit. The U.S. Supreme Court in 2018 ruled in Phillips’ favor but on narrow grounds that avoided setting a major precedent allowing people to claim religious exemptions from anti-discrimination laws. But in June 2023, in a case billed as a sort of sequel, the 6-3 conservative majority U.S. Supreme Court held the First Amendment protected web designer Lorie Smith from being compelled by Colorado to provide services to same-sex weddings.
