Paris CNN —For two-time Olympic track and field champion Caster Semenya, Paris 2024’s boxing was unusually poignant. She took light welterweight gold on Friday night, besting her Chinese opponent in a dominant performance. But her Olympics have been marred by allegations over her gender, citing a 2023 decision by a now-discredited boxing regulator to bar her from a women’s tournament. Khelif was, “born female, was registered female, lived her life as a female, boxed as a female, has a female passport,” with IOC spokesperson Mark Adams said. The IOC should be “making sure that all athletes that take part in Olympics are well protected,” Semenya said.

DETROIT AP —The case against a man accused of killing a Detroit synagogue leader collapsed Friday as a judge dismissed a remaining murder charge, three weeks after a jury cleared him of a similar but separate charge. Prosecutors acknowledged that the pending murder charge probably had to be dismissed, but it still was a blow in the highly publicized case. Samantha Woll served as board president of the Isaac Agree Downtown Synagogue. Woll’s body was discovered outdoors, just east of downtown Detroit, hours after she had returned from a fall wedding. Woll was president of the Isaac Agree Downtown Synagogue and also active in Democratic politics, working for US Rep. Elissa Slotkin and state Attorney General Dana Nessel.

CNN —Not even three months into her time as head coach of the US women’s soccer team, Emma Hayes is already going for an Olympic gold medal. CAS said it’s now up to the International Gymnastics Federation to determine how medals should be reassigned given the ruling. GO DEEPER How a score inquiry led to gymnast Jordan Chiles' Olympic bronzeThe appeal by the Romanian federation requested all three athletes be placed in third and allocated medals, the court said in its release. After Chiles finished her routine, Bărbosu beamed and held the Romanian flag to celebrate winning bronze, unaware that Chiles’ coach had submitted an inquiry. Upon seeing the changed score, Chiles began screaming in celebration. Before Chiles’ inquiry, Bărbosu and Maneca-Voinea were tied for third with identical scores of 13.700.

CNN —The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruled on Saturday that the initial inquiry made by the USA over Jordan Chiles’ score in Monday’s gymnastics floor exercise final was filed after the one-minute deadline. That means that Chiles’ score is being reverted to the original 13.666, which was only good enough for fifth place. It’s unclear as of Saturday what that means for the bronze medal that Chiles was awarded. Immediately after the competition finished on Monday with Chiles’ routine, Romanian gymnast Ana Bărbosu thought she had won the bronze medal after posting a score of 13.700. CNN has reached out to the FIG to ask what their ruling will be on whether Chiles’ medal will be revoked.

The farrago of a sport that is the modern pentathlon owes its rarefied existence to Pierre de Coubertin, the father of the modern Olympics, who, according to legend, imagined it as a test of mettle for a typical French cavalry officer. Caught behind enemy lines, such a man might have to fence with and shoot at his pursuers; run toward safety; swim across a body of water; and ride away on a random horse he happened to encounter. But many things that made sense in the 19th century seem less persuasive in the 21st. So, drifting toward obsolescence and facing eviction from the Olympics after an accusation of horse abuse in the Tokyo Games, modern pentathlon’s governing body voted in 2021 to overhaul itself for the contemporary era. While the pentathletes at the Paris Games are indeed riding horses over a series of jumps as part of the event, they will face an entirely different fifth discipline when they get to Los Angeles in 2028: a race the organizers are calling a “‘Ninja Warrior’-style obstacle course.”

Breaking is a new sport at this year’s Summer Olympics — at least we’ll call it a sport for the sake of the Games. You probably know it as break dancing, the art form in which performers spin, pose, glide and dance across the floor with incredible athleticism and charisma. The event debuted yesterday in Paris with the women’s, or B-Girls’, competition. Ami Yuasa of Japan, known as B-Girl Ami, bested Lithuania’s Dominika Banevic, or B-Girl Nicka, to win breaking’s first gold medal. The dance spread nationally and globally through movies like “Beat Street” and pioneering crews providing demonstrations in countries like Japan and England.

Previously, running shoes were “flats” designed with a less-is-more approach. Carbon-plated supershoes from various brands are now worn by your average runners chasing personal records at major marathons around the world. Since the Vaporfly’s debut in 2016, runners have shattered world records, including achieving a sub-two-hour marathon. However, just because baking soda is produced from natural ingredients doesn’t mean it’s safe to ingest without regulation, she added. The primary way baking soda could be helpful for issues such as acid reflux is by neutralizing acid. There has also been some evidence to suggest baking soda may also slow the progression of kidney disease. Fitness studies have typically dosed within the range of 0.2 to 0.5 grams of baking soda per kilogram of body weight — meaning a person weighing about 59 kilograms, or 130 pounds, might use around a tablespoon of baking soda at a minimum. Baking soda supplementation isn’t the only way to alleviate acid-induced health problems.

Female athletes of color have historically faced disproportionate scrutiny and discrimination when it comes to sex testing and false accusations that they are male or transgender. Since the Tokyo Games in 2021, track’s World Athletics tightened the eligibility rules for female athletes with DSD conditions. Male athletes are not required to regulate their natural levels of testosterone, and female athletes who do not have DSD conditions also can benefit. In this dysfunction, boxing eligibility rules have not kept pace with other sports, and the issues weren’t addressed ahead of the Paris Games.
