Tesla is set to report second-quarter earnings after the bell on Tuesday. Although Tesla reported vehicle deliveries of 443,956 in the second quarter, a 4.8% decline from the year-earlier period, those numbers were better than analysts had expected. But Musk and his stalwart Tesla bulls and broader fan base have ambitions for the EV maker beyond making and selling cars. In 2021, Musk also began to promise that Tesla would develop and produce humanoid robots capable of factory work, at least. Tesla "deliveries" are not an audited financial metric, but are the closest approximation to sales reported by the company.

The short of it: Much of the policies he wants would benefit his companies, but some would just line up with his ideology. But for the last several years Musk has repeatedly shown support for Trump – or opposition to President Joe Biden. SpaceX Rocket Fails, Breaking Apart in Orbit
  + stars: | 2024-07-12 | by ( Kenneth Chang | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
The second stage of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket sustained a rare but catastrophic failure Thursday night, disintegrating in orbit during the deployment of the company’s latest batch of Starlink internet satellites. In a posting on X two hours after launch, Elon Musk, the chief executive of SpaceX, reported that the rocket had suffered a “RUD” — rapid unscheduled disassembly — while in orbit. It remained uncertain whether SpaceX could salvage the 20 Starlink satellites jeopardized by the rocket malfunction. This is the first failure of a Falcon 9 rocket since 2016, when one exploded on the launchpad during the loading of propellants for an engine firing test. Between that explosion, which destroyed an Israeli satellite, and the malfunction on Thursday, SpaceX had enjoyed a streak of more than 300 successful Falcon 9 missions.

SpaceX's Falcon 9 is pictured launching satellites to orbit in space after it lifted off from the Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, U.S., in this screenshot obtained from a handout video released on July 12, 2024. SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket is grounded, pending an incident investigation, after an inflight failure — a rare misfire for the company's workhorse vehicle. The mission, known as "Starlink Group 9-3," launched from California's Vandenberg Space Force Base on Thursday evening and was carrying 20 satellites bound for low Earth orbit. But the rocket's upper second stage failed to reignite its engine as planned and was destroyed, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk confirmed. Falcon 9 is grounded until the Federal Aviation Administration signs off on SpaceX's investigation of the incident, the federal regulator confirmed.

The launch vehicle carried 20 satellites for SpaceX’s Starlink network, which already operates via more than 6,000 satellites that have been deployed via dozens of launches. “During tonight’s Falcon 9 launch of Starlink, the second stage engine did not complete its second burn. As a result, the Starlink satellites were deployed into a lower than intended orbit,” according to a statement from SpaceX. Musk added that the Starlink satellites were deployed into orbit, but they may be too near Earth to remain there for long. It’s not clear what this mishap means for the future of SpaceX’s Falcon 9.
