Suni Lee held down the fort as the only American in Sunday's uneven bars final, earning a bronze and successfully defending her podium finish in Tokyo. Lee had very specific goals in mind for her Olympic encore: a team gold medal, an all-around podium finish, a bars medal and a gold medal on the balance beam. Her gold is the country's first Olympic medal in gymnastics and the first Olympic gymnastics medal for an African nation. The conflict involved contentions over where the uneven bars prodigy would train and allegations that Nemour’s coach was overworking the 17-year-old. Lee and Simone Biles will contend for a beam medal Monday, which is the final day of gymnastics in Paris.

The Olympic men’s golf competition was in the hands of Jon Rahm. In the battle for bronze, Japan’s Hideki Matsuayama shot a final-round 65 to finish at 17-under-par, two shots behind Scheffler and one behind Fleetwood. Scheffler has won seven of his last 11 outings, all coming in majors or signature events with limited fields. The biggest winner this week was perhaps golf as an Olympic sport. Massive crowds all three days, genuine Olympic energy, and a star-stacked leaderboard proved the sport has a place in the Games.

CNN —Scottie Scheffler produced a remarkable final round to clinch gold in the men’s golf competition at the Paris Olympics on Sunday. Scheffler finished his final round level with Tommy Fleetwood, but a bogey on the 17th hole for the British golfer dropped him down to 17-under. Fleetwood then carded a par on the final hole, allowing Scheffler to clinch the victory and giving the Brit the silver. Heading into Sunday’s final round, Scheffler was on the peripheries of the contenders for the Olympic title but definitely not among the favorites. Sunisa Lee, the only American gymnast to qualify for Sunday’s uneven bars final, earned the chance to compete in Paris after a frightening year. Lee, now 21, entered the Tokyo Olympics as a strong contender for a gold medal on uneven bars, and perhaps silver in the all-around, behind Simone Biles. But when Biles’s late withdrawal created a spot, Lee capitalized with a strong, steady performance to win the all-around gold, the most coveted title in gymnastics. By the time the Olympic trials ended in June, Lee was the second-best all-around gymnast competing, behind only Biles. In pursuit of that uneven bars title, Lee has been training a difficult skill that no gymnast has competed before, taking a release move called a Jaeger and adding a full twist.

Lithuanian discus thrower Mykolas Alekna is poised to carry on the legacy of his father, Virgilijus, who holds an Olympic record in the same discipline. His 69.89-meter throw in Athens 2004 guaranteed the then-32-year-old a second Olympic gold medal, having also won in Sydney 2000. The world record followed in April 2024, when all his six throws – alongside his new all-time mark – were over the elite 70-meter mark. PARIS — A noise rippled through Stade de France on Saturday evening when, before a semifinal of the women’s 100 meters at the Paris Olympics, the lane belonging to Jamaican sprinting star Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce was unexpectedly left empty. Fraser-Pryce, long the standard-bearer for the event after winning Olympic gold in 2008 and 2012, bronze in 2016 and silver in 2021, did not start the race, a dropout that was not revealed publicly until her competitors stepped up to their starting blocks. Mr. Pommel Horse has had quite the week. Stephen Nedoroscik, dubbed "Pommel Horse Guy" by the internet, became an Olympic bronze medalist Monday, then a meme. He won bronze on the pommel horse, performing a more difficult routine than in the team final and scoring a 15.300.
