Prosecutors allege Trump falsified business records to hide the reimbursement of hush money payments that were made to influence the election outcome. And it may feature at least one audio recording of Trump and Cohen allegedly discussing a catch and kill deal. Necheles represented Trump’s business at its tax fraud trial in 2022. It was the third “catch and kill” deal to come after a key meeting at Trump Tower in August 2015 between Trump, Cohen and Pecker. On October 27, 2016, Cohen wired the money to Daniels and 12 days later Trump won the election.

Scrolling through my Venmo transactions, it's evident that requests for comically small amounts of money are almost always made by friends who were either born with or earn more money than me. "Rich people love to Venmo request you $4.72 for like half a bagel because they have no concept of money and don't understand that working class people operate under an economy of buying someone a beer," one X user mused. "Friend making $450k as a software engineer: 'Can you Venmo me $3.62 for your share of the Uber ride?'" Susan Bradley, founder of the Sudden Money Institute, coaches clients who have quickly or unexpectedly come into large windfalls of cash on how to transition out of being a have-not. Energy prices, which have been a major factor in the past two months' inflation readings, pushed higher on signs of further geopolitical turmoil. Minutes released Wednesday from the March Fed meeting showed officials were concerned about higher inflation and looking for more convincing evidence it is on a steady path lower. Sticky price CPI entails items such as housing, motor vehicle insurance and medical care services, while flexible price is concentrated in food, energy and vehicle prices. "If that's the case, you would require a decent amount of unemployment to get inflation all the way to 2.0%." That's why Furman and others have pushed for the Fed to rethink it's determined commitment to 2% inflation.

Three years ago this month, Vice President Kamala Harris moved into her official residence in northwest Washington, a quiet 73-acre enclave where the U.S. Navy keeps an observatory as well as the nation’s master clock. Near the villa, the team had found something else: A brick foundation of a smokehouse used to cure meat. Ms. Harris did not have to be told who had used it. Well before moving to the new residence, the nation’s first Black vice president had been told by aides about the 34 individuals who once lived on the property against their will. A subsequent opinion essay for CQ Roll Call was the first mention of it in the news media.

"This is not tenable," the trial judge, New York Supreme Court Justice Juan Merchan , said in his decision, noting that much of the pretrial publicity has been caused by Trump himself. "Defendant appears to take the position that his situation and this case are unique and that the pre-trial publicity will never subside," the judge wrote in Friday's decision. The poll "provides no information about how it obtained the contact information of respondents or how it ensured its samples were actually random or representative," the judge wrote. Last week, Trump lost a Manhattan appellate court bid for an emergency delay of the trial on pretrial publicity grounds.

Inflation slowed substantially in 2023 as the Fed lifted rates to nearly a quarter-century high and held them at that level since July. Still, most Fed officials have signaled that they plan to cut rates this year if the economy evolves as expected. And if the inflation situation worsens even further, the Fed may even have to consider raising rates. Like Bowman and Kashkari, New York Fed President John Williams said rate hikes aren’t part of his baseline outlook. The timing of that first rate cut is critical because if the Fed cuts too soon, it risks locking in inflation at a high level.

Kristi Noem said Donald Trump was “exactly right” to want states in charge of abortion access in America. For Noem, Scott and others in consideration to become Trump’s running mate, the former president’s latest contortions around abortion present a new challenge as they compete for his attention. Trump angered several anti-abortion leaders this week by refusing to back a federal abortion ban while embracing exceptions that Republicans throughout the country have for years opposed as morally questionable. But for a party that has long defined life as beginning at conception, Trump’s latest evolution on abortion will test those aspiring to run with him. “That’s just a fact.”Rubio was an early co-sponsor of South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham’s bill to ban abortion nationwide 15 weeks into a pregnancy.

Scotland’s Hate Crime and Public Order Act came into force last week, a contentious law that expands existing legislation to include transgender identity as a protected characteristic from hate crimes. In the first week of the law’s enactment, a feminist group, “Let Women Speak,” organized a rally against the legislation in Scotland’s capital on Saturday. Another major concern for those who oppose the Hate Crime Act is the supposed lack of clarity on what type of behavior could constitute an offense under the new law. But 25-year-old Scottish trans student Lucy (who asked not to be identified by her real name due to concerns about continued online abuse), said the new law does not reassure her. Scotland’s proposed reforms would have allowed transgender people to self-identify, without the need for a medical diagnosis or certificate.

Who gets to buy a Birkin bag?

(CNN) — It’s so hard to get your hands on an Hermès Birkin bag that it should be illegal. Hermès’ ultra-exclusive positioning has meant Birkin sales have continued to overperform in the market even as most other luxury brands see demand slowing from post-pandemic highs. A scarcity-driven distribution model has helped drive desire for Birkins, as well as more broadly fuel Hermès’ business. Saroyan Humphrey/WWD/Getty ImagesThe lawsuit alleges shoppers are required to buy ancillary products (items like scarves, pillows or shoes) before being allowed to purchase a Birkin handbag. Presumably, the plaintiffs could buy a Birkin from The RealReal even if they can’t from Hermès directly.

On Monday, Trump rejected leading anti-abortion groups' efforts to get him to endorse a nationwide abortion ban.
