NEW YORK (AP) — Longtime Starbucks leader Howard Schultz is stepping down from the company's board of directors, the coffee chain announced. Schultz is credited for transforming the Seattle-based business into the coffee giant it's known as today. His departure from the board is “part of a planned transition,” the company said Wednesday. In recent months, Starbucks and Schultz also came under fire over allegations that the company violated labor laws amid workers' unionization efforts. The National Labor Relations Board previously charged Starbucks with hundreds of labor law violations, including firing labor organizers and illegally closing unionized stores.

DETROIT – The United Auto Workers and Detroit automakers remain far apart ahead of the union "likely" strategically striking the companies after an 11:59 p.m. ET Thursday deadline, UAW President Shawn Fain said Wednesday night. Fain also laid out general plans about how the union expects to strategically strike the Detroit automakers, if needed. Fain referred to the union's plans as a "stand-up strike," a nod to historic "sit-down" strikes by the UAW. He also said Fain missed a Tuesday meeting that he and Ford Chair Bill Ford believed he would be attending.

“The automakers can’t plead poverty,” Fields told CNN on Wednesday, noting the industry’s recent string of profitable years. [Automakers’] CEO pay went up 40%. “But I do think he’s quite misplaced in that if there’s a work stoppage… there will be lots of people hurt,” the former Ford CEO said. However, economists say a UAW strike is unlikely to cause a recession, though it would do damage to local economies and parts suppliers. You can’t fault them for trying to deal with inflation that is hurting their families,” the former Chrysler CEO said.

All this uncertainty has led markets to lack conviction, flip-flopping as conflicting narratives around inflation rates and Fed hikes prevail. But this week’s readings — just a few days ahead of the Fed’s September policy meeting -— could give the markets direction. “Getting core inflation to 2% won’t come quickly, and upside risks remain,” said Greg McBride, chief financial analyst at Bankrate. And while the Fed generally looks at core inflation, the impact of crude prices often extends into other areas of the economy. DETROIT (AP) — Leaders of the United Auto Workers union are considering targeted strikes at a small number of factories run by each of Detroit's three automakers if they can't reach contract agreements by a Thursday night deadline. At the Tuesday meeting, Fain didn't say whether the union would target vehicle assembly plants or component factories, one of the people said. Strikes at parts plants could force production halts at multiple assembly factories. The union and companies have said they’re willing to talk in an effort to work out deals before the deadline. Yet there was optimism on both sides that they still could reach reach deals before the deadline.

The Great College Pricing Sham

I use quotation marks, because merit aid is granted to half the students at public colleges and 84% at private colleges. Today the average merit-aid discount at private colleges is $23,000 — leaving the student to cover the remaining $30,000 or $40,000. At four-year public colleges, tuition now accounts for 52% of operational revenue, versus 48% from state funding. To make college more accessible, we need to make greater public investments — at both the state and federal levels — in higher education. James S. Contract talks between the UAW and the Detroit automakers have gone to the strike deadline and beyond in years past. Stellantis said on Friday it offered U.S. hourly workers a 14.5% wage hike over four years but no lump sum payments. The UAW said the GM and Ford offers would change the formula for calculating profit-sharing, and if it had been in effect last year GM workers would have received 29% less and Ford workers 21%. A UAW strike that shuts the Detroit Three manufacturers could cost carmakers, suppliers and workers over $5 billion, the Michigan-based Anderson Economic Group estimated. GM recorded a $3.6 billion pre-tax loss in 2019 after UAW members went on strike for six weeks, the longest walkout against a Detroit automaker since 1970.

DETROIT (AP) — The United Auto Workers union on Friday rejected wage and benefit offers from all three Detroit automakers, raising tensions just six days before a strike deadline for 146,000 employees. Union President Shawn Fain told workers in a Facebook Live appearance that he filed proposals from Ford, General Motors and Stellantis in a wastebasket. Stellantis offered wage increases in each year of a new four-year contract totaling 14.5%. To handle inflation, Ford offered cost of living pay that he called severely deficient, while GM and Stellantis offered lump sums. China said last week it would cut interest rates on existing mortgages and eased rules for first-time buyers in big cities, in what the central bank and financial regulators jointly said were moves "conducive to expanding consumption." But to prevent profit margins from shrinking further, state-owned banks have also lowered deposit rates by 10-25 basis points in a coordinated move. But they also warn that a 15 basis point cut in interest rates on Chinese households' 131.4 trillion yuan of deposits reduces interest income by 197 billion per year. Mortgage rates for first homes are around 4%, while one-year fixed deposit rates are roughly 1.5%. "People don't consume because they don't have money so cutting deposit rates cannot really work."

GM said the wage hike is the largest proposed since 1999. GM said that under its offer, current temporary employees will receive a 20% increase to $20 per hour wage and it would shorten the time it takes to get to the maximum wage rate for permanent employees. The wage increase for most of GM's roughly 46,000 UAW-represented workers would be 10%, while newer employees would be eligible for up to a 56% increase in wages over the four years of the deal, the company announced Thursday after meeting with union leaders and negotiators. The proposed contract also includes two additional 3% lump sum payments resulting in a total increase of 16%; $5,500 ratification bonus; $6,000 one-time inflation-recognition payment; and $5,000 in inflation-protection bonuses over the life of the agreement (in-progression employees are eligible). But not all unionized workers have equal access to their employer’s DB plan. One sticking point in the UAW negotiations is to restore access to company pension plans that had been closed to anyone hired after the union accepted deep concessions in its 2007 contract. Why employers moved away from traditional pensionsMany employers started making the shift to 401(k) plans and other DC plans in the 1980s. The PBGC protects pension benefits and continues to pay retirees should their employer or its DB plan become insolvent. Retirement readiness at risk for millionsSimply having access to a workplace retirement plan isn’t enough to guarantee a secure retirement.

Decarbonisation in mining still a long way off

Engineering student Mark Peirce from the School of Mines poses for a portrait in the college's experimental mine in Idaho Springs, Colorado, U.S., December 9, 2021. As metals are used across many different industries that serve customers across various geographies, it is difficult for mining companies to account for the whole supply chain. The International Council on Mining and Metals , whose members include around 25 mining companies, on Thursday published guidance for all mining companies on how to account and report their Scope 3 - or indirect - emissions "to try and answer the problem of patchy data to make companies report consistently," its CEO Rohitesh Dhawan said at the conference. Scope 1 refers to a company's direct emissions, Scope 2 to indirect emissions from purchased energy while Scope 3 refers to all other indirect emissions, for example from a company's third-party suppliers. Mining companies have set targets to decarbonise and mostly aim to reach net zero by 2040 and 2050, but some are struggling to keep up.
