El Niño Is Over. What Does That Mean for Summer?

El Niño, the natural climate pattern linked to warmer conditions in the tropical Pacific Ocean, has ended, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced on Thursday. The counterpart pattern known as La Niña, defined by cooler equatorial sea surface temperatures, is expected to develop soon. A strong El Niño has cycled through the atmosphere since last June, leading to a wetter than normal winter, especially in the Southeast and in California, where a mind-boggling 51 atmospheric rivers dumped rain and snow. That’s because, while El Niño conditions can rip apart storms that develop in the Atlantic Basin, hurricanes and tropical cyclones are more likely to form under La Niña. Calm conditions produced by La Niña combined with warm ocean temperatures will intensify the activity likely to occur during hurricane season.

The financial sector, along with other value-oriented sectors, is beginning to significantly underperform the major equity benchmarks over the last six weeks. We'll share a potential short candidate, close to breaking down through a key support level that could indicate much further downside to come. First, let's visualize the relative performance of the financial sector, along with three other value sectors that have all shown deterioration since April. CNN —El Niño has officially come to an end and the ripples from its demise will shake up weather around the globe. With El Niño out of the spotlight, its opposite is preparing to take center stage later this summer: La Niña. For now, neither La Niña nor El Niño are present and a so-called neutral phase has begun, according to NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center. Here’s what a summer without El Niño and a budding La Niña could have in store. When the reigning Miss USA and Miss Teen USA, Noelia Voigt and UmaSofia Srivastava, resigned last month, it rocked the pageant world. Even when the organization has faced allegations of racism, sexual harassment and pageant rigging in the past, no titleholder had ever before stepped down. Some pageant contestants said they were disillusioned with Miss USA and described the environment as toxic. We want to learn more about Miss USA, its parent company Miss Universe and the pageant world more broadly. CNBC screened for stocks that were on the verge of forming a dreaded death cross chart pattern. A death cross occurs when a stock's 50-day moving average slips below its downward-trending 200-day counterpart. Northrop Grumman Aerospace and defense stock Northrop Grumman has pulled back roughly 9% in 2024 and is closing in on a death cross chart pattern. The stock's 50-day moving average broke above its 200-day counterpart earlier this year, a short-lived sign of improving momentum. Other stocks on the list signaling a death cross chart pattern include Pool Corporation and Fortive Corporation .

Like so many speculative growth ETFs and stocks, the S & P SPDR Biotech (XBI) ETF is nowhere close to its former all-time high from early 2021. Even though the ETF now is up considerably from that point, many traders still have wanted nothing to do with it. We can understand why, especially when so many other stocks surpassed their respective former highs many months ago. The vertical blue lines depict when the 50-DMA crossing OVER the 200-DMA led to strong and extended upside follow through. It's been a challenging few years for XBI, but as these charts show, the blueprint for a continued comeback is there.

Her parents took her and her sister to nondenominational megachurches that adhered to a lot of Baptist and Pentecostal ideals, she said. As a kid, she loved the way every service felt “like a concert,” filled with music and light, and she made loads of friends through church. “So I didn’t want to associate with that kind of evangelicalism.”Draut is representative of an emerging trend: young women leaving church “in unprecedented numbers,” as Daniel Cox and Kelsey Eyre Hammond wrote in April for Cox’s newsletter, American Storylines. A new survey reveals that the pattern has now reversed.”While over the past half-century, Americans of all ages, genders and backgrounds have moved away from organized religion, as I wrote in a series on religious nones — atheists, agnostics and nothing-in-particulars — young women are now disaffiliating from organized religion in greater percentages than young men. And women pushing back on the beliefs and practices of several faiths, particularly different Christian traditions, is something I have been reading about more and more.

Certificate of deposit rates have come a long way since the Fed started raising interest rates in March 2022. The average online bank APY has gone up by 4.14 percentage points to 4.79% since then, Wells Fargo analyst Michael Kaye said in a note Friday. Since banks generally follow the fed funds rate, interest rates on CDs and savings accounts are expected to fall in turn. A federal judge temporarily barred notorious "pharma bro" Martin Shkreli from streaming or disseminating copies of a one-of-a-kind Wu-Tang Clan album he had forfeited as part of his criminal fraud conviction in 2017. Steven Cooper, a lawyer for PleasrDAO, said Wednesday that he could not comment on whether he has been in touch with prosecutors on Shkreli's alleged violation of his forfeiture order. Shkreli bought the Wu-Tang Clan album in 2015 for $2 million, setting a Guinness world record for the most expensive musical work ever sold. The 31-track, two-disc Wu-Tang Clan album, came in a hand-carved, nickel-and-silver-cased box set, which itself was nestled in a larger leather box. At the time of the sale, Shkreli owed almost $2.4 million on the forfeiture order.

This disastrous mindset has hollowed out Silicon Valley's ability to innovate and caused regular people to grow increasingly frustrated with everyday tech. The large platforms have generally ignored this feedback for one big reason: The tech industry has been taken over by career managers. Now Google Search is more profitable and worse, elevating spammy content and outright scams, a problem exacerbated by artificial intelligence. AdvertisementBut today's tech products feel built to sell a dream of the future rather than solve a customer's existing pains. As long as the tech industry is controlled by people who don't build things, it will continue to build products that help raise growth metrics rather than help consumers with tangible problems.

CNN —US intelligence has learned of discussions between Houthis in Yemen to provide weapons to the Somali militant group al-Shabaab, in what three American officials described to CNN as a worrying development that threatens to further destabilize an already violent region. The Houthis are Zaydi Shiites, and al-Shabaab traditionally has been deeply ideologically opposed to Shiism. “Being able to sell some weapons would bring them much needed income,” the senior administration official said. But a weapons agreement between al-Shabaab and the Houthis would be something new, according to US officials. No matter what the Houthis provide, there’s likely limited opportunity for al-Shabaab to fire directly at US assets in the region.

While a supernova is the explosive death of a massive star, a nova refers to the sudden, brief explosion from a collapsed star known as a white dwarf. The dwarf star remains intact, releasing material in a repetitive cycle that can occur for thousands of years. “It’s incredibly exciting to have this front-row seat.”T Coronae Borealis, otherwise known as the “Blaze Star,” is a binary system in the Corona Borealis that includes a dead white dwarf star and an aging red giant star. The red giant becomes increasingly unstable over time as it heats up, casting off its outer layers that land as matter on the white dwarf star. Cooke recalled that the last nova he witnessed — Nova Cygni in 1975 — had a similar brightness to what is expected from T Coronae Borealis.

Hong Kong CNN —A major heat wave is forecast to spread across large swathes of northern China this week, bringing record high temperatures to some areas, according to China’s meteorological authorities. The heat wave, which began on Saturday, has already triggered government weather alerts and follows the country’s hottest spring on record. The national observatory on Monday issued an orange alert for high temperatures – the second most severe warning – as sweltering heat engulfed the country’s north. Beijing on Saturday raised its first yellow alert for high temperatures this summer, warning residents to avoid going outdoors during the hottest parts of the day. Zhong said the high temperatures were linked to El Niño, a natural climate pattern marked by warmer than average ocean temperatures in the equatorial Pacific.
