For years, a Native American tribe from the picturesque East End of Long Island has fought bitterly for formal state recognition, a designation that was stripped away more than a century ago by court decisions that are now widely considered racist. The New York State Legislature passed a bill four times in a decade to recognize the tribe, the Montaukett Indian Nation, but the legislation was vetoed each time — the first three occasions by Andrew M. Cuomo, and the last by Gov. The bill was written differently, and there were signs that Ms. Hochul might be receptive: She recently named an enrolled member of the Chickasaw Nation, Elizabeth Rule, as the state’s deputy secretary for First Nations. But on Friday, the Montauketts learned that their battle must continue. Ms. Hochul vetoed the legislation, saying that she did not see sufficient evidence to overturn the century-old ruling that the tribe “no longer functioned as a governmental unit” in New York.

A prosecutor asked a judge to Friday to schedule the Georgia election interference criminal trial of former President Donald Trump and his co-defendants to begin on Aug. 5 — exactly three months before the 2024 presidential Election Day. "The State clearly retains the logistical and prosecutorial capabilities to try all of the remaining Defendants together," Willis said in her motion. Trump's campaign spokesman said, "Radical Democrat Fani Willis has again proven that her case is purely political, designed to interfere with President Trump's re-election by demanding a trial date in the most vital time in President Trump's winning campaign." "Crooked Joe Biden knows he can't beat President Trump and this corrupt step by Fani Willis is just further proof of that fact," the spokesman said. The Manhattan Supreme Court judge in that case has said he will willing to re-schedule it to avoid a conflict with Trump's trial earlier that same month in Washington.

The effort to expel GOP Rep. George Santos is picking up after a damning Ethics Committee report released Thursday. And if it happens, Santos' expulsion could lead to a hotly contested special election in New York. That special election must occur between 70 and 80 days after the proclamation is issued. It appears a special election would not involve a primary, but rather that members of the county party committees would select their nominees. Two other Democratic candidates who are among the top fundraisers include former state Sen. Anna Kaplan and Army veteran Austin Cheng.

REUTERS/Brendan McDermid/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNov 16 (Reuters) - New York State will issue a new offshore wind solicitation on Nov. 30 with bids due in January 2024, the state government said, in a move that should support the troubled industry. This would allow the companies to re-offer their planned projects at higher prices and exit their old contracts. Those measures included the expedited solicitation for offshore wind and other renewable projects announced on Thursday. The offshore wind projects that the companies are developing are Orsted's 924-megawatt (MW) Sunrise, and the joint venture between Equinor and BP's 816-MW Empire Wind 1, 1,260-MW Empire Wind 2 and 1,230-MW Beacon Wind. In a positive sign for the companies, the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) on Oct. 24 awarded three offshore wind contracts at much higher prices than the earlier projects bid by Orsted, BP and Equinor.

What are the hottest rental markets in New York these days? The answers may come as a surprise: According to a new national study by RentCafe, as of October, Queens, N.Y., had the highest level of renter activity among the 150 largest metropolitan markets in the United States. But the real dark horse was Buffalo, which came in at No. With higher interest rates keeping potential buyers in the rental market across the country, rental activity and competition have ballooned. Queens was found to be the most popular location for renters looking for apartments on RentCafe.com, with 72 percent fewer available listings compared with last October.

A New York judge on Thursday temporarily suspended a gag order barring former President Donald Trump from commenting on court staff in his $250 million civil business fraud trial. She seeks $250 million in damages and wants to permanently bar Trump Sr., Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump from running a New York business. Trump has already violated the narrow gag order twice, catching a total of $15,000 in fines. That gag order barred Trump from making statements targeting the prosecutors, likely witnesses and court staff in the case. A federal appeals court temporarily paused the D.C. gag order earlier this month.

New York CNN —New York’s water and parks are full of plastic waste. PepsiCo has downplayed the risks of its plastic packaging and created a public nuisance in the state, she alleged in a lawsuit filed against the company on Wednesday. Additionally, PepsiCo has failed to properly warn the public about where its plastic packaging ends up, according to the lawsuit, making it sound like recycling will effectively deal with plastic waste. Environmental advocates activists are hopeful that the complaint could help change the way lawmakers approach plastic pollution. Generally, lawsuits surrounding plastic pollution are brought by non-profits, not government officials, she said.

I will however NOT be seeking re-election for a second term in 2024," Santos said in a post on the X social media site. "Representative Santos’ conduct warrants public condemnation, is beneath the dignity of the office, and has brought severe discredit upon the House" of Representatives, the bipartisan committee said in a statement. Ethics Chairman Michael Guest, a Republican, intended to file a motion to expel on Friday, according to media reports. It is highly unlikely that Engoron will declare a mistrial, given his earlier fraud findings and defense of his law clerk's conduct. A judge on Tuesday sided with Paramount Global on certain claims after Warner Bros. Discovery sued earlier this year over streaming rights to long-running animated series "South Park." New York state Supreme Court Justice Margaret Chan said that Paramount did not violate state consumer protection laws after its streaming platform, Paramount+, hosted "South Park" specials. The decision follows a February lawsuit, where Warner alleged that Paramount deceptively withheld the specials and other "South Park" content to bolster Paramount+ offerings. Paramount would later release "South Park: Post Covid" in 2021 and "South Park: The Streaming Wars" in 2022, exclusively on Paramount+.

Warner sued in February, saying Paramount breached the agreement by providing only 14 new episodes, and diverted other new "South Park" content to its Paramount+ streaming service under a $900 million agreement with Parker and Stone. Dave Sanders/Pool via REUTERS//File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNov 13 (Reuters) - Former U.S. President Donald Trump's social media platform Truth Social has lost $73 million since its launch in early 2022, a securities filing by Digital World Acquisition Corp (DWAC.O), the SPAC that plans to merge with the company, showed on Monday. Trump had announced the launch of his social media app in Oct 2021, saying it would "stand up to Big Tech" companies such as Twitter and Facebook that previously barred him. In 2022, Truth Social posted a loss of $50 million, with net sales of just $1.4 million. It lost $23 million in the first half of this year, with net sales of $2.3 million. Trump Media & Technology Group's (TMTG) independent registered public accounting firm has indicated that the financial condition raises substantial doubt as to its ability to continue as a going concern, according to the filing.

The pay bumps could help win over some employees who balked at smaller bonuses last year that they blamed on losses from the retail operations. The firm's allocation for bonuses fell by as much as 40% in 2022, according to another source, after earnings slid 48%. Wall Street pay varies widely based on performance and market conditions, and bonuses account for a large share of compensation - in some cases more than double an employee’s annual salary. Goldman was involved in several major transactions in recent months that spurred optimism about a nascent market recovery. New York CNN —Former President Donald Trump is abandoning his effort to move the so-called hush money trial from New York state court to federal court. In a brief filing submitted to a New York-based appeals court, Trump said he was no longer appealing a lower-court ruling that rejected his bid to get the case transferred to federal court. Trump has pleaded not guilty to 34 counts of falsifying business records to conceal the reimbursement of hush money payments made to adult film star Stormy Daniels. In July, US District Judge Alvin Hellerstein denied Trump’s request to move the New York case to federal court, ruling that the payments to Daniels and alleged subsequent falsification of business records were not related to Trump’s presidential duties. Hush money paid to an adult film star is not related to a President’s official acts,” the judge wrote.

We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. CNN —On the day after Republicans lost pivotal races in Kentucky, Ohio and Virginia last week, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene offered a diagnosis for her party’s ills. On Tuesday, Ohio voters passed an amendment to the state constitution that guarantees abortion rights. The disconnect may or may not cost Trump votes in 2024, but it’s hurting Republicans up and down the ballot. “Democrats will win in 2024 by making the election a choice, not just a referendum on Biden’s performance in office.

The woman Republicans once talked of as a candidate for president — after her dad’s eight years, of course — is both known and a cipher. They seemed to have in their possession way too many Trump Organization documents with her arabesque signature and too many of her emails in which nine-figure loans were being discussed. Before her stint in Washington with her father, Ms. Trump was pals with the children of the American aristocracy — even if their parents scorned him as a parvenu and a golf cheat. A granddaughter of a woman who worked as a maid in the Carnegie mansion and a great-granddaughter of the widowed German immigrant who gave the Trump Organization its start, Ms. Trump was the first Trump woman to the manner born. For that, even more than the beauty her father frequently and creepily extolled, she played a special role in the Trump Organization.
