CNN —Nigeria’s government is celebrating a “landmark victory” after a UK court ruled it was not liable for a multibillion-dollar payout earlier awarded to a private firm over a failed gas project. The company had sued for compensation over lost profits following the collapse of a 20-year deal with Nigerian authorities in 2010 to build a gas processing facility. The awarded sum and accumulated interest had now exceeded $11 billion, nearly half of Nigeria’s federal budget for this year. Disagreements after both parties blamed each other for defaulting on obligations led to the failed deal and sparked a lengthy legal battle. Lawyers for the Nigerian government had argued that P&ID induced the country’s officials with bribes for the contract to be awarded to the firm.

Tuesday marks three full weeks without a House speaker and 24 days until the government runs out of money, to say nothing of aid packages many lawmakers want for Israel and Ukraine. Most Republicans voted for all three men as speaker, but the outside edges of the party were too big to get a majority. Only two of the current speaker candidates supported the 2020 election results: Emmer and Scott. Four of the current speaker candidates voted no, including Sessions. No matter how much the world cuts back on carbon emissions, a key and sizable chunk of Antarctica is essentially doomed to an “unavoidable” melt, a new study found. Researchers used computer simulations to calculate future melting of protective ice shelves jutting over Antarctica’s Amundsen Sea in western Antarctica. How much melting can still be prevented by reducing emissions?” said study lead author Kaitlin Naughten, an oceanographer at the British Antarctic Survey. In each case, ocean warming was just too much for this section of the ice sheet to survive, the study found. That part of Antarctica “is doomed,” said University of California Irvine ice scientist Eric Rignot, who wasn’t part of the study.

The trip is part of a nationwide tour by Biden and his top aides to promote his economic agenda, which the White House calls “Bidenomics”. In May, Biden made his case on the debt ceiling issue in a New York congressional district that Republicans won by a narrow margin. She was not invited to Biden’s event, the White House official said. Biden won the county by 1,520 votes in November 2020, after Trump had claimed victory by 390 votes in 2016. Former U.S. President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump delivers remarks to supporters at the Club 47 USA event in West Palm Beach, Florida, U.S. October 11, 2023. U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan plans a hearing in Washington on the bid by Special Counsel Jack Smith to bar Trump from discussing possible witnesses and disparaging prosecutors, court staff and potential jurors. Smith has cited “inflammatory public statements”, including a stream of social media attacks by Trump, that prosecutors argue are undermining public confidence in the legal system and may influence potential jurors. Trump has pleaded not guilty and accused prosecutors of attempting to interfere with his campaign. Though limited in scope, the gag order from Judge Tanya Chutkan is likely the biggest limit on the former president’s speech he has ever been handed. Chutkan outlined the order in court and plans to issue a more detailed written order in the coming days. That order bars Trump only from speaking publicly about the court staff in his civil fraud trial. Chutkan also said she believed she could issue a show-cause order, which would require Trump justify why he breached the rules of the gag order. Violations of the gag order may not necessarily need to be raised by prosecutors for Chutkan to impose a penalty, she said.

Pharmacy staff at Walgreens locations across the country called out of work on Monday to protest harsh working conditions, leaving some stores closed or critically understaffed. It has been months since the jackpot was last won on July 19, when a single ticket in California won a jackpot worth $1.08 billion. BANGKOK (AP) — Asian shares have climbed after Wall Street advanced on potentially encouraging news about interest rates, which have been dragging markets lower since the summer. Oil prices, which had climbed Monday on worries about the violence in the Middle East, fell back. Oil prices already were volatile. Interest rates, and expectations for where they will go, have been driving Wall Street's swings more than anything since the start of last year. Investors dislike higher interest rates because they knock down prices for stocks and other investments.

CNN —Concerns over Kenya’s human rights record have cast a shadow over a UN decision that gave Kenya the go ahead to lead an armed multinational force to Haiti amid brutal gang violence in the Caribbean country. For a year, the multinational force, comprising 1,000 Kenya police personnel is expected to combat criminal gangs responsible for a wave of killings, kidnappings and rape in Haiti. But human rights groups argue that Kenya’s history of human rights abuses must be evaluated. On Tuesday, Amnesty International Kenya urged UN member states, human rights organizations and citizens to thoroughly examine the “human rights and humanitarian implications” of deploying an armed multinational force to Haiti. What stake does Kenya have to be able to take those chances in a terrain that is foreign and dangerous?
