Life-threatening storm surges are due to hit Florida's Gulf Coast this week with the arrival of Hurricane Milton, which is strengthening over the southern Gulf of Mexico and set to make landfall as a powerful Category 3 storm on Wednesday. The NHC issued a storm surge warning early Monday for Florida's Gulf Coast from Flamingo on the southern tip to the mouth of the Suwannee River, including Tampa Bay. A hurricane watch is in place along the same coastline, from Chokoloskee near Everglades City, to the Suwannee River, while a tropical storm watch is in place further west to Indian Pass. "A Storm Surge Watch means there is a possibility of life-threatening inundation, from rising water moving inland from the coastline," the NHC said. ET, Milton was about 195 miles west-north-west of Progreso, Mexico, and about 750 miles west-south-west of Tampa, with maximum sustained wind speeds of near 100 mph with higher gusts.

MEXICO CITY — The mayor of the capital of Mexico’s violence-plagued state of Guerrero was killed on Sunday less than a week after he took office, the state’s governor confirmed. Alejandro Arcos was killed just six days after he took office as mayor of the city of Chilpancingo, a city of around 280,000 people in southwestern Mexico. Arcos' death comes just three days after the new city government’s secretary, Francisco Tapia, was shot to death. At least six candidates for public office were killed in the state in the run-up to Mexico's June 2 elections. Arcos' social media posts show the mayor in recent days had been supervising disaster relief efforts following the impact of Hurricane John last month, which caused severe flooding in beach resort Acapulco and surrounding towns.

Hurricane Milton is expected to continue to develop rapidly as it soaks up its natural fuel, warm water in the Gulf of Mexico. It could be pushing out sustained winds of 145 mph by them, according to its projections, making it a Category 4 hurricane. Rain, strong winds and possible storm surges were expected to begin Tuesday night along Florida’s west coast, according to NBC News meteorologists. Up to 8 inches of rain was forecast, with storm surges of 6 feet and more possible for coastal cities, they said. By late afternoon Saturday, Tropical Depression 14 had become Tropical Storm Milton, according to the National Hurricane Center.

A hurricane warning was issued for parts of Mexico's Yucatan state, and much of Florida's west coast was under hurricane and storm surge watches. It had maximum sustained winds of 160 mph (257 kph), the National Hurricane Center said. Its center could come ashore Wednesday in the Tampa Bay area, and it could remain a hurricane as it moves across central Florida toward the Atlantic Ocean. That would largely spare other states ravaged by Helene, which killed at least 230 people on its path from Florida to the Appalachian Mountains. The Tampa Bay area is still rebounding from Helene and its powerful surge.

Source: Brian McNoldy; University of Miami Upper Ocean Dynamics LabSee the Ocean Heat Fueling Hurricane Milton, in One ChartThe energy that supercharged Hurricane Milton into a Category 5 storm on Monday came from the waters of the Atlantic Ocean, which have been abnormally warm not just at the surface, but at depth, too. The seas absorb most of the extra heat that carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gasses trap near Earth’s surface. So the same human-caused forces that have been bringing abnormal heat to towns, cities and landscapes are helping to warm the oceans. Ocean heat content is a metric that captures the amount of thermal energy stored from the sea surface down through the ocean depths. “It’s felt like an entire hurricane season has taken place over the past few weeks,” Dr. Wood said.

The doctor, she said, drove her to the clinic, accompanied by Field’s mother and the doctor’s wife. New York CNN —Even as Florida braces for another major hurricane, new estimates reveal Hurricane Helene caused up to $47.5 billion in losses for property owners. CoreLogic estimates Helene caused between $20 billion and $30 billion of uninsured flood losses. That dwarfs the firm’s estimate of between $10.5 billion and $17.5 billion worth of uninsured wind and flood losses. All told, CoreLogic calculates that Hurricane Helene caused between $30.5 billion and $47.5 billion in total wind and flood losses across 16 states. CNN —The mayor of a crime-ridden city in Mexico has been killed less than a week after taking office, the latest in a string of violent attacks targeting politicians in the country. However, the violence facing Mexican politicians stretches far beyond Guerrero, as was demonstrated by the historic June 2 election that took Sheinbaum to power. With 20,000 electoral positions up for grabs, the scale of bloodshed committed by those attempting to influence the vote was unprecedented. Just hours after Sheinbaum’s election, the woman mayor of a town in western Mexico was shot dead. It says that criminal gangs often finance campaigns during election season, intimidating candidates and violently intervening to compel politicians to cooperate with them.

Tropical Storm Milton rapidly intensified into a Category 1 hurricane Sunday with its path aimed at Florida, less than two weeks after Hurricane Helene made landfall in the state. The storm debuted as a hurricane Monday afternoon after producing sustained winds of 80 mph and continued to strengthen by drawing fuel from the Gulf of Mexico's sultry waters. Forecasters said Milton was likely to reach major hurricane status, denoting a Category 3, 4, or 5 storm Monday. It was pushing out maximum sustained winds estimated to be 80 mph, with some higher gusts, the hurricane center said, and moving east at 6 mph. Tropical Storm Milton formed in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico Saturday morning, just hours after it became a tropical depression, , according to the National Hurricane Center. This new storm formation comes less than 10 days after Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida, and is forecast to strengthen into a hurricane, bringing life-threatening conditions to the state's west coast next week. Maximum sustained winds from Tropical Storm Milton are estimated to be 40 miles per hour with higher gusts, the NHC said. Hurricane and storm surge watches will likely be required for certain regions of Florida on Sunday, many of which have just been hard-hit by Hurricane Helene.
