July 7 (Reuters) - Warm and cuddly are adjectives that seldom spring to mind when one thinks of rattlesnakes. The findings challenge the notion that reptiles are solitary hunters that display little in the way of complex social behavior. Ethology, the study of animal behavior, has long recognized that birds and mammals, including humans, find comfort from being physically close to their own kind. To measure stress levels in the snakes, Martin used a heart-rate monitor designed for humans. "It lets us know as humans that, hey, we're not that different from these snakes," Martin said.

Has Zuckerberg invented a Twitter killer? Meta’s new social network had already racked up more than 10 million sign-ups within seven hours of its launch, and attracted celebrities and politicians like Oprah Winfrey and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Democrat of New York. But the presence of big-name advertisers such as Procter & Gamble and Ford points to the bigger commercial stakes in the fight between Mark Zuckerberg’s new platform and Elon Musk’s Twitter. Meta is billing Threads as a “friendly” forum, but the social media giant is gunning for the blue bird. Advertisers are watching closely, even if they can’t buy ads there yet.

Rattlesnakes are calmed by being near another snake, a new study shows. Researchers found that giving rattlesnakes a partner decreased their heart rate in stressful situations. Martin and her team arrived at this conclusion by measuring the resting heart rates of 25 wild-caught, adult rattlesnakes and comparing that to their heart rate after being startled. They found that the snakes who were alone in their enclosure had significantly higher heart rates than those that were with another snake. In nature, some rattlesnakes live alone while others live communally.

The federal government is embracing remote work and cutting back its office footprint nationally. President Joe Biden and Donald Trump might not appear to agree on much, but when it comes to cutting back on office space, they're aligned. Now federal tenants are in for a new phase of belt-tightening as more accept remote and hybrid work, real estate experts say. "The majority of federal offices are still largely vacant on most days," said Darian LeBlanc, the director of government services at Cushman & Wakefield. So far, only the Department of Veterans Affairs has publicly said how it plans to use remote and hybrid work.

HAMBURG, June 30 (Reuters) - Ford (F.N) has found what it described as a major international investor for the U.S. carmaker's German plant in Saarlouis and has signed initial agreements together with the western state of Saarland, it said at a works meeting at the plant on Friday. "This is an excellent basis for further negotiations, with the potential to create around 2,500 jobs in Saarlouis," said Martin Sander, head of the company's German unit Ford Werke. "This week we have taken a big step towards this goal," he said, adding that the aim was still to transform the plant and create future employment opportunities. A Ford spokesperson did not name the investor but said only that it is a major international investor. June 27 (Reuters) - Aston Martin (AML.L) said on Tuesday it remained on track to report an adjusted profit of 500 million pounds ($636.7 million) by the fiscal year 2025. The Gaydon-based group said it expects to "substantially achieve" those financial targets in 2024 - including a revenue forecast of about 2 billion pounds - and added it is likely to exceed them in 2025. The company had posted an adjusted core profit of 190.2 million pounds for the year ended Dec. 31, 2022. The luxury car maker, which has marked 2023 to be the "peak year" of capital spend, in May had maintained its outlook for the current financial year, helped by strong sales of its sport utility vehicle DBX and higher selling price. CNN —A candidate from the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party won a local leadership post for the first time on Sunday in a resounding victory for a group whose anti-migrant, Euroskeptic and anti-Muslim agenda is under surveillance by German authorities. The AfD’s Robert Sesselmann triumphed over incumbent Jürgen Köpper of the conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party to become district administrator of Sonneberg, in Thuringia, central Germany, at the weekend. “Unfortunately, it has not been a personal election as state elections have always been, it has become a pure party election,” he said. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s Social Democratic Party’s chairwoman Saskia Esken called the AfD victory in Sonneberg a “political dam-break” on Monday. Even though the move doesn’t apply to parent party AfD, it revealed a growing segment of young Germans united by extreme views on migration and anti-feminism.
