(AP) — As Nebraska's new law restricting gender-affirming care for minors goes into effect this weekend, families with transgender children and the doctors who treat them are steeling themselves for change. A key aspect of the law is a set of treatment guidelines that has yet to be created. Minors who already receive puberty blockers or hormones are allowed to continue the treatment, but new patients who are minors are largely banned from starting. At the time, Nebraska lawmakers were locked in a contentious battle over the proposed transgender health care ban, which touched off an epic filibuster that slowed the session to a crawl. At least 22 states have enacted laws restricting or banning gender-affirming medical care for transgender minors, and most of those states face lawsuits.

The March implosion of Silicon Valley Bank created a banking vacuum in the startup world. In 2019, the group poached four executives from SVB to work with venture capital funds and their portfolio companies. But these plans were accelerated by the collapse as customers fled to JPMorgan from SVB as well as First Republic, which JPMorgan now owns. First Republic also served emerging venture capital firms, an untapped client segment for JPMorgan's commercial bank. In some aspects, the breakdown of SVB strengthened JPMorgan's appeal to tech upstarts that had previously eschewed too-big-to-fail banks, Smith said.

Ozanne and Chisholm, both Democrats, announced last year that they would permit abortions in their counties despite a 174-year-old state law that conservatives argue bans the procedure. They said the state law barring abortions remains in effect and Ozanne and Chisholm have a duty to enforce it because babies are dying. The U.S. Supreme Court's 1973 Roe v. Wade decision essentially legalized abortion nationwide and nullified state abortion bans, including Wisconsin's. But Wisconsin legislators never erased the 1849 ban from state law. The case will likely end up before the state Supreme Court.
