WASHINGTON — Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has endorsed Donald Trump for president this year. But in a new book, the powerful Kentucky Republican is quoted after the 2020 election disparaging Trump as a “despicable human being,” “stupid” and “ill-tempered." McConnell did not deny his statements about Trump as quoted in the book, when asked about it Thursday. In late December 2020, a month after Democrat Joe Biden defeated Trump in the presidential election, McConnell skewered Trump for holding up billions of dollars in Covid relief funds. Trump is “stupid as well as being ill-tempered and can’t even figure out where his own best interests lie,” McConnell said at the time.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton sued a Dallas doctor Thursday for allegedly providing transition-related care to nearly two dozen minors in violation of state law. Paxton alleged that Dr. May Chi Lau, who specializes in adolescent medicine, provided hormone-replacement therapy to 21 minors between October 2023 and August for the purpose of transitioning genders. In 2023, Texas enacted a law banning hormone-replacement therapy and other forms of gender-affirming care for minors. Lau’s employer, the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, did not immediately return a request for comment. Paxton’s suit is the first in the nation by an attorney general against an individual doctor for allegedly violating a restriction on transition-related care for minors.

St. Olaf College boasted an 87.6% voter turnout rate in 2020, taking home the top prize in the All In Campus Democracy Challenge as the most civically engaged college campus in the country. The small liberal arts college reached that number with help from its “election ambassador program,” and this year, the school is looking to break its own record. “We are all about interpersonal connections,” said junior Roxi Wessel, an election ambassador. Several factors make St. Olaf the highest-voting college in the country, including its nonpartisan approach to the election ambassador program. Jen McAndrew, from Tuft University’s Tisch College of Civic Life, said that while Minnesota makes campus voting accessible, laws in other states are creating more barriers to entry.

WASHINGTON — The White House and Vice President Kamala Harris’ team have been in frequent contact about how she plans to distance herself from President Joe Biden, while maintaining her overall loyalty to him, according to three people familiar with the dynamic. No one in the White House was surprised by those comments, one of the sources said, since conversations had happened privately before the Fox interview. During the Fox interview, she discussed how her leadership style might differ from Biden’s decades of Washington experience. NBC News was first to report that Harris’ campaign was examining ways to distance her from Biden after criticism about her interviews. I was loyal to Barack Obama, but I cut my own path as president,” Biden said.

Listeria monocytogenes is a type of bacteria that can contaminate food and cause serious complications for certain groups of individuals. Even though cooking the meat kills any listeria that may be present, deli meat can be contaminated afterward during packaging or slicing. Similarly, the ready-to-eat meat products involved in the ongoing BrucePac recall are precooked, although the source of contamination hasn’t yet been determined. Listeria infection early in pregnancy can cause premature labor, a baby with a low birth weight and loss of the pregnancy. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, around 1,600 people are infected and 260 people die from listeria infection in the United States every year.

Yahya Sinwar, the elusive Hamas leader widely credited with masterminding the Oct. 7 terror attacks on Israel, was confirmed dead Thursday, ending a yearlong manhunt for the militant chief. The Israel Defense Forces said Sinwar was killed by soldiers in an operation in southern Gaza on Wednesday. The only sighting of him before his death was in grainy footage taken on Oct. 10, 2023, three days after Hamas' assault, according to the Israeli military. It showed him fleeing with his family into a tunnel, one of a large network build by Hamas under Gaza, which the militant group used to smuggle weapons, hide out from Israeli attacks and keep Israeli hostages captive. They were displaced in what Palestinians call the Nakba, “catastrophe” in Arabic, of 1948, when around 700,000 people were forced from their homes in the founding of Israel.

GREEN BAY, Wis. — In the weeks following the vice presidential debate, Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Walz has been sounding more like the aggressive campaigner who got the role than the buttoned-up figure he’s cut since joining the ticket. Dressed in khakis and a navy Harris-Walz sweatshirt Monday, Walz delivered some of his sharpest attacks yet against former President Donald Trump. “I’m one or two interviews from being a regular on Fox News,” Walz said at a campaign stop in Valencia, Pennsylvania, on Tuesday. Before then, he had been almost completely missing on TV since becoming the Democratic vice presidential nominee and avoiding answering questions from the media. In the last few weeks, Walz has been barnstorming swing states, appearing on multiple media platforms, and sharpening his attacks against the Trump-Vance ticket.

The Israeli military said Thursday it is "checking the possibility" that Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, accused of being the architect of the Oct. 7 terror attack, was among three militants killed in Gaza during its operations in the enclave. If Sinwar is indeed dead, his killing would be a major coup for Israel and its war in the Gaza Strip. A senior Israeli official told NBC News that troops identified Sinwar as probably being among three militants killed during a "heavy gun battle" in Gaza on Wednesday. WASHINGTON — The Biden administration announced a milestone Thursday in its effort to cancel Americans' student debt: it has provided relief to more than one million borrowers who work in public service. The Education Department said that before Biden's presidency, only 7,000 public servants had ever received student debt relief through the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program. The milestone comes after the administration has faced legal challenges to a number of its student debt relief proposals and roadblocks put up by court rulings. The Supreme Court, for example, ruled last year that the administration’s original student debt forgiveness program couldn't take effect. That plan would have benefited 43 million borrowers by canceling up to $20,000 in debt, potentially costing more than $400 billion.

“The global water crisis is a tragedy but is also an opportunity to transform the economics of water — and to start by valuing water properly so as to recognize its scarcity,” said Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director General of the World Trade Organization and one of the commission’s co-chairs in a statement. With nearly three billion people already in areas experiencing unstable water trends and several cities sinking due to the loss of below-ground water, densely populated areas such as northwestern India, northeastern China and southern and eastern Europe will bear the brunt of global water mismanagement, the report says. “The global water crisis is a ticking time bomb. Even so, a lack of public funds being devoted to water issues by lawmakers around the world will do little to solve the problem. Governments “can’t even react to the symptoms of the water problem, let alone solve the problems if they’re being fiscally strangled,” said UCL's Mazzucato.

Payton has downplayed the effect the emotions of the visit will have on the game itself, as has Dennis Allen, the longtime Saints assistant who succeeded Payton. New Orleans has converted 47% of its third-down opportunities, the NFL’s third-highest rate, while the Broncos rank second worst at 25%. An independent, bipartisan review identified “numerous mistakes” by the U.S. Secret Service and “specific failures and breakdowns” that enabled the assassination attempt that injured former President Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania, in July. “The Secret Service as an agency requires fundamental reform to carry out its mission," the members added. "Without that reform, the Independent Review Panel believes another Butler can and will happen again.”The Secret Service did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the review. “The increasing demand placed on the agency during this dynamic threat environment has resulted in our people being pushed to the limit,” said Anthony Guglielmi, chief of communications for the Secret Service. The group said it identified “deep flaws in the Secret Service, including some that appear to be systemic or cultural,” including a “lack of critical thinking among Secret Service personnel” and agents’ unwillingness to “speak up” regarding potential threats.
