Moody's is the last of the three major rating agencies to maintain a top rating for the U.S. government. Fitch changed its rating from triple-A to AA+ in August, joining S&P which has had an AA+ rating since 2011. “While the statement by Moody’s maintains the United States’ AAA rating, we disagree with the shift to a negative outlook. The sharp rise in Treasury yields "has increased pre-existing pressure on US debt affordability," Moody's said. “Moody’s just downgraded our credit rating outlook to negative because of our out-of-control government spending and deficits," hardline Republican Representative Andy Harris said on X, formerly known as Twitter.

REUTERS/Carlo Allegri/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNEW YORK, Nov 10 (Reuters) - A still-jittery bond market is clouding the outlook for a rally in U.S. stocks, analysts tracking measures of market volatility said. At the same time, the Cboe Volatility Index, (.VIX), which measures expectations for stock gyrations, has fallen to a seven-week low of 14.13. That could be a problem if Treasury yields - which move inversely to bond prices - resume a climb that has pressured stocks since the summer. A significant drop in Treasury market volatility would be great news for stock market bulls, Purves said.

Bank stocks are at an all-time low compared with the S&P 500 based on relative prices, according to data from BofA Global Research. One key factor for bank stocks is whether the Federal Reserve is close to wrapping up a monetary tightening cycle that has brought the highest U.S. interest rates in decades. Yet signs the Fed may keep rates around current levels through most of next year have weighed on bank stocks. This month, analysts at BofA Global Research said investors should “selectively” add exposure to bank stocks in anticipation of an interest rate peak. Overall, about 61% of all outstanding mortgages have an interest rate below 4%, according to the Apollo Group, leaving consumers little incentive to refinance or move.

New York CNN —If you are someone who likes to plan ahead on your taxes, the IRS this week released the new inflation-adjusted income tax brackets and standard deduction amounts that will be in effect for tax year 2024. The IRS makes inflation adjustments annually to tax brackets, the standard deduction and some other tax breaks. New income tax bracketsThe US federal income tax code currently has seven tax rates – 10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35% and 37%. For tax year 2024, each of the seven rates will apply to the following new income tax brackets:10%: Income up to $11,600 ($23,200 for married couples filing jointly)12%: Income over $11,600 ($23,200 for joint filers)22%: Income over $47,150 ($94,300 for joint filers)24%: Income over $100,525 ($201,050 for joint filers)32%: Income over $191,950 ($383,900 for joint filers)35%: Income over $243,725 ($487,450 for joint filers)37%: Income over $609,350 ($731,200 for joint filers). Taxable income, remember, is your gross income minus the various tax breaks for which you’re eligible.

REUTERS/Brendan McDermid/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNov 10 (Reuters) - A hawkish lean from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell chilled a recent rebound in stocks and bonds, with some investors suggesting the central bank was pushing back against loosening financial conditions. Some investors said Powell may have been leaning against a recent loosening of financial conditions that has come as yields have tumbled in recent weeks. Evidence of the dynamic between yields and financial conditions - factors that reflect the availability of funding in an economy - was on display in last week's 0.5% decline in the Goldman Sachs Financial Conditions Index, its sixth-biggest weekly drop since 1990. "If their concept is to have tighter financial conditions, they can’t really let those yields go down. "The rally of the markets both in equity and fixed income unwound the financial conditions tightening to a large degree," Desai said.

BlackRock registered the iShares Ethereum Trust as a Delaware statutory trust on Thursday. Earlier this year, BlackRock registered a bitcoin trust in the same manner and a week later filed an application with the SEC to launch a spot bitcoin ETF. BlackRock declined to comment on the trust's creation or on any plans for an ETF filing. To date, roughly a dozen ETF providers have filed to create spot bitcoin ETFs, or convert existing products into spot ETFs, helping fuel the recent rally in the cryptocurrency. Several other ETF providers that have applied for spot bitcoin ETFs also have sought SEC approval for spot ether ETFs, including Ark Investment Management, Invesco and VanEck.

REUTERS/Kevin Lamarque/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNEW YORK, Nov 9 (Reuters) - Falling Treasury yields helped launch an explosive rebound in stocks and lifted U.S. government bonds from 16-year lows. Evidence of the dynamic between yields and financial conditions could be seen in last week’s 0.5% decline in the Goldman Sachs Financial Conditions Index, its sixth biggest weekly drop since 1990. Policymakers have largely refrained from verbally pushing back on the easing in financial conditions during a flurry of appearances by policymakers this week. Analysts at TD Securities, however, believe further easing in Treasury yields will eventually become a "double-edged sword." To be sure, not every scenario sees the Fed in a higher-for-longer posture if Treasury yields continue falling.

NEW YORK, Nov 8 (Reuters) - Fear has plunged in the U.S. equity market following last week's explosive rally, and some options mavens are urging clients to stock up on portfolio protection while it's cheap. Meanwhile, the Cboe Volatility Index (.VIX), known as Wall Street's fear gauge, has tumbled to its lowest level in seven weeks. They recommended taking advantage of the drop in volatility to deploy stock replacement trades, which involve swapping long stock positions for cheap call options that would reap gains if the market continued to rally. Investors' equity positioning fell to a five-month low before last week's rally, Deutsche Bank data showed. With investors less exposed to stocks, "they don't necessarily need to be rushing to get hedges now," Murphy said.

If you have all or most of your money in a single investment account, you're missing opportunities to build wealth. If you're serious about building wealth, there are seven types of accounts you need to have to make it happen. If you're making estimated quarterly tax payments, you'll need to accumulate funds in your tax savings account as you earn them. Note that a "tax savings account" is not a different banking product — it's just a designated use for a savings account, like an emergency fund would be. (Like the tax savings account, this isn't a different product your bank offers — it's a specific use for an account like a high-yield savings account.)

Bloomberg | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesWhy Labor Department wants to raise protectionsIn 2020, about 5.7 million Americans rolled a total $618 billion into IRAs, according to most recent IRS data. IRAs held about $11.5 trillion in 2022, almost double the $6.6 trillion in 401(k) plans, according to the Investment Company Institute. Here's the problem, in the eyes of the Labor Department: 401(k) investors have certain protections that don't generally extend to IRA investments or the advice to move money to IRAs. "ERISA fiduciary duties are the highest fiduciary duties under U.S. law," said Josh Lichtenstein, partner at law firm Ropes & Gray. That advice typically generates compensation like a commission for the broker or agent, and the Labor Department is concerned those incentives may bias recommendations for certain investments that pay them more but aren't in an investor's best interests.

They argue that geopolitical tensions between the West and China risk the reliable supply of rare earth minerals. Aclara's Barua said that Western supply of rare earth elements will not develop if it depends on Chinese prices. "The price of any metal (rare earth or otherwise) that is coming from China or from western countries has the same pricing, so why should rare earth pricing be different?" The discussion on pricing has come up often in the Rare Earth Industry Association, said Veluri, who is also the president of the global organization with partners representing the whole rare earth value chain. Shares of Robinhood fell Wednesday after the retail brokerage reported a drop in trading volumes in the last quarter and said it's looking to expand growth in Europe. Robinhood also reported fewer monthly active users, which fell 16% to 10.3 million in the third quarter from the same period last year. Although third-quarter revenue rose 29% to $467 million, it fell short of the $480 million analysts were predicting. Revenue was hurt by a 13% decline in third-quarter transaction revenue tied to stock trading, compared with the same period last year. The drop in trading coincides with rising treasury yields –with the 10-year Treasury yield topping 5% just last month – that have been weighing on equities.

The SPDR Gold Shares ETF (GLD.P), which tracks the price of gold, has rallied 9.82% this year, driven by concerns about inflation and economic growth as well as geopolitical turbulence. Yet those gains have not been reflected in the share prices of gold miners: the iShares MSCI Global Gold Miners ETF (RING.O) and the VanEck Gold Miners ETF (GDX.AX), which track the shares of gold producers, are up only 2.28% and 1.7% respectively. "Gold prices can only help so much, if you can't produce the gold in the first place," said Islam. Even Barrick Gold, which reported a 3% gain in gold production in the third quarter, said overall output in 2023 won't meet expectations. "Investors seem very wary of stocks as a whole, and gold miners have been tracking that rather than what's happening in gold itself," said Casanova.

The memo, shared with The Associated Press, pointed to Reynolds' surprise endorsement — a rarity for sitting Iowa governors before the caucuses — as proof that DeSantis could cut into Trump's margins. In her own memo, Haley campaign manager Betsy Ankney on Monday described the Iowa contest as a “dead heat” between DeSantis and Haley, while ignoring Trump's massive lead. He has no end game.”The new DeSantis memo points to the political infrastructure that he and an allied super PAC have established across several early voting states. The estimated $60 billion wipeout caused many Gen Z investors to lose big. The relationship between stocks and bonds has been a tight one in recent months, with equities falling as Treasury yields climbed to 16-year highs. Higher yields offer investment competition to stocks while also raising the cost of capital for companies and households. Meanwhile, the S&P 500 has surged nearly 6% from its October lows. Draho expects the S&P 500 to trade between 4,200 and 4,600 until investors determine whether the economy will be able to avoid a recession. The S&P 500 was recently up more than 1% on the day.
