Cava IPO comes in a little too hot
  + stars: | 2023-06-16 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
The company’s IPO raised $318 million, about $30 million more than it had expected a few days earlier, to fuel its expansion. And just in time for the afternoon lunch rush, its shares opened on the New York Stock Exchange at nearly double its IPO price. That implies Cava’s valuation is close to $5 billion, over twice the amount private investors ascribed it in 2021. Cava is a lot like Sweetgreen – neither are profitable, and both have a similar number of stores. But Cava now trades at more than five times its theoretical annualized sales based on the first quarter, much higher than the 1.4 times Sweetgreen commands.

Not Your Dad’s Dad Food

Every year, as Father’s Day approaches and the gift guides suggesting $300 supercharged charcoal grill lighters and backyard pizza ovens roll in, I’m left wondering if I’m truly dad enough in the kitchen. Yet, dads, avert your eyes: I do not own a Big Green Egg. Blame it on my TikTok algorithm, but so many of the dads I see seem to be reveling in this profligate age of Dad Food, making homemade burger buns and subjecting spice-rubbed animal carcasses to long periods of indirect heat. I had the sense that dads were cooking more than they once did, and this was true — to a point. We have come a long way from the dawn of dad food, when man discovered fire and the “Big Boy Barbecue Book” suggested in 1956 that their occasionally grilling steaks indicated a revolutionary shifting of gender roles: “Wives take it easy.

McDonald previously won four featured actress Tonys in the play and musical categories for her roles in “Carousel” (1994), “Master Class” (1996), “Ragtime” (1998) and “A Raisin in the Sun” (2004). She is the only person to win in all four acting categories. Despite the cascade of awards, she told The New York Times in an interview last month that the recognition remained special. “It’s an honor,” she said while on a lunch break from working on yet another project.

Meta Platforms ' vision to sell a future where people work, play and mingle in a virtual world may finally be getting its long-overdue validation thanks to an unlikely partner. Apple on Monday unveiled its highly anticipated mixed reality product, known as Vision Pro , at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference . So confident in the bright future of the metaverse, Facebook rebranded itself as Meta Platforms in 2021 to better reflect its vision beyond social media. More than a year and a half later Apple's metaverse entry may finally offer the much-needed support to Meta's overambitious vision, and lure once skeptical investors back to the virtual world. With the company — and metaverse vision — so dependent on consumer adoption, this creates a difficult near-term setup, Meeks said.

It has in turn sued Staley, arguing he concealed what he knew about Epstein's trafficking and should cover any damages the bank may face in the cases. Staley left JPMorgan in 2013, a few months after the bank fired Epstein, and served as Barclays' (BARC.L) chief executive from 2015 to 2021. Zachary Margulis-Ohnuma, a lawyer who has represented sex trafficking victims and defendants, said he expected the plaintiffs to "grill" Staley on his knowledge of Epstein's sex trafficking and whether it affected the handling of Epstein's accounts. Staley also said JPMorgan had "unclean hands" given its own mistakes in dealing with Epstein. Epstein killed himself at age 66 in a Manhattan jail cell in August 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.

5 Dishes Everyone Should Know How to Grill
  + stars: | 2023-06-02 | by ( Steven Raichlen | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Grilling may be the world’s oldest, most universal cooking method, but that doesn’t guarantee automatic success. Just ask the person who routinely burns the burgers or whose fish always sticks to the grate. There are five methods of live fire cooking: direct grilling, indirect, smoking, spit-roasting and on the embers, but direct grilling is the most universal. This means cooking tender, small or thin foods, like steaks or chops, directly over a hot fire. Don’t confuse it with barbecue, which uses low, slow heat away from the food to smoke things like Texas brisket and Carolina pork shoulder.

That, however, seems to be partly reversing, even in the face of one of the world's highest inflation rates which has badly hurt spending power. Reuters GraphicsThe exchange said the relative cost of beef versus pork and chicken had dropped since 2021, though it remained elevated versus a historical average. The proportion of beef in meat consumption climbed this year to 46% from 44% two years ago. The recent bump in the data underscores the importance of beef in Argentine culture, even as the highest inflation rate since 1991 has pushed some 40% of the population into poverty.

ONE OF grilling’s greatest virtues: the way the smoke does most of the work for you, infusing every bite of the food it touches with intense flavor. Chick-fil-A's oldest restaurant is closing on Sunday after 56 years of operation, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. The restaurant in Greenbriar Mall, Atlanta, first opened in 1967 and sold chicken sandwiches for $0.59. "At the time, the concept of a shopping mall restaurant was groundbreaking," Chick-fil-A says in a history of the Greenbriar Mall store, describing it as a "pioneer in the modern-day food court." The restaurant later relocated to a larger spot in the mall. Chick-fil-A's first free-standing restaurant didn't open until nearly two decades later in North Druid Hills, northeast Atlanta.
Mediterranean restaurant chain Cava saw its revenue rise 12.8% in 2022, according to regulatory filings released Friday as it filed to go public through an initial public offering. Over the last five years, it's converted Zoes' footprint into new Cava locations. Last year, the company's net sales climbed to $564.1 million, 12.8% higher than the year earlier. The company has 263 locations open as of April 16 and plans to open 34 to 44 new units by the end of the year. But investors might have an appetite for Cava stock despite concerns about a potential recession this year hitting restaurant demand.
Chick-fil-A’s first-ever restaurant is closing

New York CNN —Chick-fil-A’s first-ever restaurant is closing after more than a half-century in business. Opened in 1967, the Greenbriar Mall food court location in Atlanta is set to close on Saturday, according to local reports. It’s unclear why the restaurant is closing and Chick-fil-A didn’t immediately return CNN’s request for comment. In 1997, a plaque was installed at the mall restaurant to celebrate its 40th anniversary and celebrate how the company pioneered in-mall dining. Its success led him to evolve the restaurant into the Chick-fil-A chain, and some consider that to be the first Chick-fil-A location.
