James Van Der Beek gave his first comments about the “shock” of learning he has colorectal cancer and the “trickiest thing” he’s faced since being diagnosed. Rates of colorectal cancer in people under 55 like Van Der Beek have been increasing by 1% to 2% a year since the mid-1990s, according to the American Cancer Society. “I’d always associated cancer with age and with unhealthy, sedentary lifestyles,” Van Der Beek told People. Van Der Beek underwent a colonoscopy, which is when he learned he has cancer. “The trickiest thing is there are so many unknowns with cancer,” Van Der Beek said.

The reality is that both parties learn lessons from losing elections that apply only in the short term — say, from one presidential election to the next midterm or from one midterm to the next presidential election. Not anymore — it’s why Democrats usually overperform in special elections, with more devoted “every election” voters right now. Meanwhile, in the non-battlegrounds, which were more affected by the basic “mood music” of the election, Democrats were shellacked. The seeds of discontent with this version of the Democratic Party can be traced back a decade to Obama’s decision to anoint Hillary Clinton as his successor. Democratic presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., at the CNN Democratic presidential primary debate in New York City on April 14, 2016.

The U.S. Capitol building November 6, the President-elect Donald Trump was declared the winner of the presidential election. GOP leaders have been dreaming of another major tax package, as many tax provisions are set to expire at the end of 2025. Remember: With Republicans winning control of the Senate, delivering on Trump’s agenda will come down to whether the GOP retains a majority in the House. Even with unified GOP control, there would be challenges ahead for Republicans. One issue is the political math: House Republicans believe if they do hold onto the majority, it won’t be by much.

He finds it easier to date older women now but is also content to be alone. He says dating older women means there's no pressure to talk about having children. It wasn't necessarily a conscious decision, but several influences probably contributed to my never having children with the women I dated. It's not just the idea of having kids I've let go as I have gotten older — I also no longer feel forced to have a serious relationship. But now that I'm decidedly not having children and my age has eased, the pressure to be in a relationship has eased.

Tesla and a handful of other so-called Trump trades led the market rally this week as investors welcomed the Republican's victory in the presidential election. Excluding stocks that reported earnings this week, some of the best performers were those viewed as tied to Donald Trump 's win. Trump trades can earn that title by being part of sectors such as financials or energy viewed as beneficiaries of his expected shifts away from regulation, among other things. CNBC screened for the Trump trade names that led the index higher this week and did not report earnings. The electric vehicle maker is one of the best-known Trump trades given CEO Elon Musk 's advocacy for the president-elect on the campaign trail.

Russia's brain drain has become its economy's biggest problem, an economist told Business Insider. The long-lasting nature of brain drain makes the issue more serious than, say, inflation, which could be remedied by central bank maneuvering. Over the next decade, Russia's economy could devolve into one dependent mainly on its natural resources rather than on the most innovative industries, Portes speculated. That's similar to what other economic forecasters have predicted, with some warning Russia's economy could become de-industrialized as its resources are siphoned off by the war. Advertisement"It will be reduced to a resource economy, a natural resource economy," he said of Russia's future.

SINGAPORE — Vitol is eyeing the metals market with global petroleum demand expected to peak in a decade, signaled Russell Hardy, CEO of Vitol, the world's largest independent energy trader. In contrast to the eventual decline of the crude industry, metals business is going to witness a "great deal of growth through the electrification phase," he added. "So we quite like the idea of being involved in the bigger metal markets. And the three bigger metal markets are steel and iron ore, copper and aluminum," he said. Washington CNN —Just days after winning a comeback election, President-elect Donald Trump is evaluating how his campaign promises might translate into policy. As a candidate, Trump pledged to slap 60% tariffs on all goods coming in from China and 10% tariffs on goods imported from all other countries. “The way that President Trump looks at tariffs are not in isolation. Trump’s economic advisers – and the president himself – view the forthcoming tariff revenue as a way to offset that cost. “If he can use the tariffs as a means to an end, he’ll do that.”CNN’s Katie Lobosco contributed to this report.

Singapore CNN —A humble suburban school in Australia has fended off competition from skyscrapers, museums and airport terminals to be named World Building of the Year 2024. Brett BoardmanA school had long been on the south Sydney site, though the old 1970s building was no longer fit for purpose, according to fjcstudio, the design firm behind the project. The World Building of the Year was selected from the winners of each category, as chosen by a panel of 175 festival delegates. Friday’s result marks the second consecutive year that the WAF judges opted for an educational building, with a serene boarding school in China taking last year’s title. Darlington Public School is also the second Sydney building to win in the past three years, after Quay Quarter Tower — dubbed the world’s first “upcycled” skyscraper for retaining two-thirds of an old high-rise on the site — won in 2022.

It's still uncertain what Donald Trump's second presidency will look like, but his first administration was highly responsive to business issues with a set way of operating, top German business executive Joe Kaeser told CNBC. "If I personally, for my company at the time, had an issue to resolve, his administration was extremely receptive," the chairman of the supervisory board of Siemens Energy said in an interview with CNBC's Annette Weisbach Thursday. Kaeser was Siemens' CEO throughout President-elect Trump's first term. Trump did "a lot of things which helped the economy" during his first four years in office, Kaeser said, noting that he believed the president-elect's tax cuts at the time were a positive. One study done at the time, however, showed that the Trump tax cuts, which were implemented in 2017, only had a limited contribution to the strong U.S. growth the following year.
