S&P 500 (.SPX) companies overall are expected to have increased earnings by 1.3% from a year ago, according to LSEG IBES. After a rough September for stocks, "we need some good news" from earnings season, said Matthew Miskin, co-chief investment strategist at John Hancock Investment Management. Inflation dampened company earnings in the first half, after consumer prices surged in 2022 to their highest levels in decades. Investors will also scrutinize company fourth-quarter outlooks, with S&P 500 earnings for the fourth quarter currently expected to rise 10.8% from a year earlier. One clue could come from the consumer discretionary sector (.SPLRCD), where earnings are expected to have jumped by 23.1% from the year-ago period.

AdvertisementAdvertisementEven though Russian airspace is closed to US airlines, many Americans may still end up flying through Russian skies. This includes four European carriers: Air Serbia, Turkish Airlines, Pegasus Airlines, and Belarus' Belavia. Emirates' flight path from Dubai to Los Angeles on September 25 showed it flew over Russian airspace. Looking at the time of writing for mid-November, a ticket on Air India is nearly $2,000 cheaper than American. This was a particular concern earlier this year when Chinese airlines were using Russian airspace on routes to the US.

REUTERS/Andrew Kelly/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsOct 2 (Reuters) - Delta Air Lines (DAL.N) on Monday said it had been informed by one of its service providers that a "small number" of overhauled engines contain parts that do not meet documentation requirements. The company is working with the engine service provider to replace the affected parts and to remain in compliance with the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) guidelines, Delta said. The company did not identify the engine service provider responsible for the overhaul. The problematic parts, which were certified by AOG Technics, were detected by an unnamed third-party, Bloomberg News reported on Monday, citing a company spokesperson. The FAA had earlier said AOG Technics sold bushings for GE Model CF6 engines without having the agency's approval.

In the years after Buffett sold IBM, he dramatically raised Berkshire's stake in Apple, becoming the largest shareholder outside of index and exchange-traded fund providers. As of the end of June, Berkshire's Apple stake was worth more than $177 billion, accounting for nearly half of Berkshire's entire equity portfolio. Buffett also admitted it was a mistake not being an early investor in Amazon , saying he underestimated the brilliance of founder Jeff Bezos. Some said that Buffett sold them too early and missed the subsequent rebound when the economy reopened. "It could've been worse, but it was a mistake," Buffett said during 1995 annual meeting .

United Airlines pilots approved a new contract with compensation increases of as much as 40.2% over the four-year contract, making the carrier the last of the three largest U.S. airlines to seal a deal with its aviators during an industry shortage. The deal is worth about $10 billion, according to the Air Line Pilots Association, the pilots' union. ALPA said on Friday that the new contract won 82% approval from the more than 97% of United pilots that voted on it. Delta Air Lines and American Airlines pilots approved new contracts earlier this year, also with big raises. Other unions are also pushing for improved pay and benefits, calling for strikes or potential strikes when negotiations fall short of demands.
