China is studying further trade measures against Taiwan, the Ministry of Commerce said on Saturday, two days after Beijing slammed a speech by Taiwan President Lai Ching-Te. The Democratic Progressive Party, Taiwan's ruling party, has not taken any practical measures to lift "trade restrictions" on mainland China, the commerce ministry said in a statement on its official website. "At present, relevant departments are studying further measures based on the conclusions of the investigation into trade barriers from Taiwan (against mainland China)," it added. The Saturday announcement from China's commerce ministry could portend tariffs or other forms of economic pressure against the island in the near future. In May, China reinstated tariffs on 134 items it imports from Taiwan, after Beijing's finance ministry said it would suspend concessions on the items under a trade deal because Taiwan had not reciprocated.

Goldman Environmental Prize winner Andrea Vidaurre said her award-winning efforts to improve air quality in California are very much tied to her own experiences. Vidaurre, who is Peruvian American, was born and raised in California’s Inland Empire, which is east of Los Angeles and has some of the country’s worst air quality. “It is really personal to me because they are the front lines of all of this,” she said. “If you live anywhere in the region, you’re impacted by air quality.”Vidaurre was one of six people around the globe — one for each inhabited continent — who were awarded what’s been referred to as the “Green Nobel” earlier this year. Nihon Hidankyo was given the award “for its efforts to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons,” the Norwegian Nobel Committee said. "The nuclear powers are modernizing and upgrading their arsenals; new countries appear to be preparing to acquire nuclear weapons; and threats are being made to use nuclear weapons in ongoing warfare," the committee said. In terms of conventional warfare, this peace prize was awarded in a year with more active conflicts than at any time since World War II. Getting a Nobel Peace Prize is by no means a guarantor that the efforts of its recipient have or will be successful.
