Big investors took a selective approach to China-based technology stocks in the second quarter, recent regulatory filings suggest. Technology stocks continued their upward trend during the second quarter, including a slew of 2022's China-based tech losers. The fund scooped up a fresh position in e-commerce company JD.com worth nearly $64 million, and bought up China-focused exchange-traded funds KraneShares CSI China Internet (KWEB) and iShares China Large-Cap (FXI) . Other hedge funds raising bets on the company included Third Point's Dan Loeb, while Viking Global's Ole Andreas Halvorsen opened a minor stake worth $77.7 million. Not every investor bet big on the sector during the second quarter.

Greenlight Capital's David Einhorn said he's getting concerned about the stock market after a strong rally and has added sizable downside protection to his portfolio. Between January and June, the S & P 500 popped 15.9% for its best first half since 2019. Einhorn, 54, believes inflation remains a big risk even though data has suggested easing price pressures. Recent inflation readings have shown a noted deceleration and the tailwind from higher rents is likely to dissipate, causing core inflation to fall further," Einhorn said. "Even so, we believe inflation is stickier and more entrenched than the market is currently appraising."

The Sarajevo Film Festival, which was founded towards the end of the Bosnian war by a group of film enthusiasts, has become southeastern Europe's largest such event, showcasing 235 films this year. After the end of the Bosnian war, in 1997, U2 staged a huge concert in Sarajevo, which Bono ended by urging the crowd to "Kiss the Future". "Culture was one of the main things that gave us the power to survive that period," said Mirsad Purivatra, a founder of both the wartime cinema and the Sarajevo Film Festival. He described how people would pack into the basement to attend cultural events and meet friends, rushing home before curfew. Images of filmgoers and the underground rock shows by photographer Milomir Kovacevic Strasni are being displayed for an exhibition taking place to mark the 30th anniversary of the Apollo wartime cinema as part of the film festival.

Stablecoins may be crypto's killer app, but there needs to be regulation in place to allow them to flourish – which could benefit the U.S. dollar, according to Brian Brooks, a partner at Valor Capital Group. "In many countries where you can't get a dollar bank account, stablecoins are your best solution." "If only the U.S. government would create a framework that allows dollars to back stablecoins in a regulated way, that demand would flourish," he continued. This week, payments giant PayPal launched its own dollar-backed stablecoin – a first for a major U.S. financial institution. "Demand for [stablecoin products are] a way for us to make the dollar relevant again at a time when governments around the world are looking to decouple from the dollar," said Brooks.

Every so often, a hot new investor on the rise is crowned "the next Warren Buffett" by the financial media, followed swiftly by disappointing performance that proves they're no "Oracle of Omaha." "The next Warren Buffett" remains Warren Buffett alone. What makes Buffett so hard to duplicate? That makes Buffett, famously a student of Columbia University's legendary value investing professor Ben Graham, the most venerated investor of his, or succeeding, generations. "Berkshire's economic moat is more than just a sum of its parts," said Greggory Warren, Berkshire analyst at Morningstar.

The Pantsyr S-1 air defence missile system is seen atop the Russian Defence Ministry headquarters in Moscow on August 3, 2023. Two drones were shot down upon approaching Moscow overnight, Russian officials said, in the latest of a growing number of interceptions by the Russian capital's air defense systems. There were no damage or injuries, the Russian ministry of defense said. Ukraine has not officially claimed responsibility for drones heading to Moscow in recent weeks, but Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy late last month said war was "returning to Russia's territory." The unmanned aerial vehicles have led to damage to some buildings in the Russian capital and to a small number of reported injuries.

Edtech venture capital funding in 2023 may be on pace for its lowest annual total since 2016. The one exception to this edtech funding dropoff is in AI tools for education and upskilling. This puts the estimated total funding for 2023 at only $3.5 billion, the lowest annual total since 2016, according to HolonIQ. Additionally, there has not been a single edtech "mega round," or a startup funding round valued at over $100 million since 2022, with the exception of the Indian edtech unicorn Byju's $250 million fundraise this spring. Pujji and Mushin also indicated that AI edtech deals were the exception in this slowdown period.

A general view shows parts of the structure of flight terminal at an abandoned construction site of a Mexico City airport that was scrapped at Texcoco on the outskirts of Mexico City, Mexico September 3, 2020. "The finance ministry asked for everything to stay the same, so that's what's going to happen," Deputy Transportation Minister Rogelio Jimenez Pons told reporters. Jimenez had previously said that the finance ministry was considering an earlier payback schedule, as the funds used to pay off the bonds for the canceled airport currently come from a usage tax generated by the existing Mexico City International Airport (AICM). Once the Navy runs the AICM, which Jimenez said he expects to happen later this year, it may decide to renegotiate a buyback with the finance ministry, he added. Lopez Obrador opened the farther-away Felipe Angeles International Airport (AIFA) last year as an alternative to the Texcoco airport on an active military base.

August, when rainfall usually peaks and summer temperatures soar, is set for further economic impact from floods and heatwaves. Rainfall in northeastern provinces could be as much as 50% higher than normal in August, China's national forecaster have warned. In the northern province of Hebei, over 1.2 million people had been evacuated as of Wednesday due to flooding caused by residual rains from Doksuri. China's top economic planner on Friday earmarked an additional 100 million yuan to support post-disaster recovery in Tianjin and Hebei on top of the 100 million yuan announced on Wednesday for Beijing and Hebei. The finance and water resources ministries separately on Friday also offered 450 million yuan to support the overall recovery effort.

Paris 2024 Olympics - Training for test swimming event for Paris 2024 - River Seine, Paris, France - August 4, 2023 A tourist boat is pictured on the River Seine beside the Pont Alexandre III bridge REUTERS/Stephanie LecocqPARIS, Aug 4 (Reuters) - Participants of this weekend's Open Water Swimming World Cup were barred from a Friday morning training session in Paris' river Seine as heavy rainfall caused water quality to dip below health standards, the French Swimming Federation (FFN) said. The women's 10 kilometre race on Saturday - a qualifying event for marathon swimming at the Paris 2024 Olympics - is still scheduled to go ahead, pending a new river water quality test on Friday evening. "The water quality tests are done regularly, and they are progressively improving," the spokesperson added. International federation World Aquatics did not immediately respond to a request for comment about further backup plans for the races if Seine water quality does not improve this weekend. The city has been working on clean-up efforts to make the Seine swimmable again, as it was during the 1900 Paris Olympics more than a century ago.

A group of analysts from JPMorgan's trading desk say a new record high for S&P 500 "feels inevitable." The S&P 500 closed at 4,576.73 on Tuesday, less than 5% shy of its record closing level of 4,796.56 reached in January 2022. The fact earnings can beat expectations in an high-rate environment creates the argument for elevated valuations, in their view, and that could push the S&P 500 well beyond record highs. Anastasia Amoroso, iCapital's chief investment strategist, told Insider on Monday that all-time highs indeed look possible for the S&P 500 in the near-term. Steady multiples and fulfilled earnings expectations should be enough to justify the S&P 500 at 4,800 or above."
