The RNC set a number of benchmarks a campaign needs to hit to make the August 23 debate. Candidates must poll at 1% or higher in three polls with over 800 likely Republican voters. Not many polls have over 800 likely Republican voters, so that'll be harder to hit than some expect. That's a high bar for some campaigns in the increasingly busy bottom of the race, but that's not even the number that's going to screw them. Chris Christie, Donald Trump, Mike Pence, and Doug Burgum will all in the GOP primary by the end of the week.

Whenever I want to put myself to sleep at night, I run through the names of all the former vice presidents. Back when Donald Trump announced it all seemed sorta life-as-usual, but now the race is definitely on. All the major names are men except Nikki Haley, who’s arguing that “it’s time to put a badass woman in the White House.” Well, yeah. There’s very little chance Haley’s campaign is going anywhere, but I think we can all agree she could really perk things up. Rather than dodging the whole Donald Trump matter whenever possible, Christie stresses that he’s running to save the country from a former close colleague who he now calls a “lonely, self-consumed, self-serving mirror hog.”

A former federal prosecutor, Christie, 60, has argued he is the only potential rival with the skills and willingness to attack Trump directly. He netted just 1% support from potential Republican primary voters in a Reuters/Ipsos poll in May, compared to Trump's 49% support and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis' 19% support. That strategy may entice Republican voters who are ready to move past Trump, but it remains unclear whether any Republican can prevail without the support of Trump's still-loyal base.
