U.S. Coast Guard Rear Admiral Shannon Gilreath said authorities had been informed that the ship was going to undergo the maintenance. "We were informed that they were going to conduct routine engine maintenance on it while it was in port. Now, officials say they will need to pause the recovery effort altogether — with four more victims not yet found — so that pieces of the crumpled bridge can first be removed from the Patapsco River. But, he said, other vehicles that fell from the bridge — possibly with the construction workers inside — are trapped behind debris that makes the area too dangerous for divers. Officials said one of the victims was identified by a driver’s license found with him, and another by his fingerprints. Wes Moore of Maryland said that divers started the search for victims less than an hour after the bridge collapsed. He said officials have been taking the recovery part of the search as seriously as they took the rescue effort, when they believed the missing victims might have still been alive.

Judith Butler Thinks You’re Overreacting
  + stars: | 2024-03-24 | by ( Jessica Bennett | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
The first thing I did when reading Judith Butler’s new book, “Who’s Afraid of Gender?”, was to look up the word “phantasm,” which appears 41 times in the introduction alone. (It means illusion; the “phantasm of gender,” a threat rooted in fear and fantasy.) In a single word, “gender” holds the power to seemingly drive people mad with fear. Butler’s latest comes more than three decades after their first and most famous book, “Gender Trouble,” brought the idea of “gender as performance” into the mainstream. As it turns out, Butler — who has written 15 books since — never intended to return to the subject, even as a culture war raged.

Moss. After first being announced in 2020, production for “A Complete Unknown” experienced numerous lags, from the pandemic to the SAG-AFTRA strike. Still, the movie has retained complete support from Dylan himself, who gave director James Mangold detailed annotated notes on the script. “A Complete Unknown” does not yet have a release date.

For Ytasha Womack, the Afrofuture Is Now

And as with many things Afrofuturistic, Ytasha Womack’s fingerprints are all over it. (In 2023, Ms. Womack published “Black Panther: A Cultural Exploration,” Marvel’s reference book examining the films’ influences.) Afrofuturism is a way of thinking about the future, with alternate realities based on perspectives of the African diaspora. People have used imagination to transform their circumstances, to move from one reality to another. And so to claim your imagination — to embrace it — can be a way of elevating your consciousness.

Sen. Bernie Sanders and Senate Democrats cited advances in artificial intelligence and automation Thursday as they argued for a new bill that would mandate a 32-hour federal workweek. "The sad reality is Americans now work more hours than the people of any other wealthy nation," the Vermont independent later said. The bill introduced by the committee chair Sanders and Sen. Laphonza Butler, D-Calif., would gradually reduce the standard workweek from 40 hours to 32 hours over four years. Sanders and Democrats at Thursday's hearing said that reducing the workweek would allow people to spend more time with family and on hobbies. "This would be napalm upon the fire of inflation," said Sen. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, and the ranking Republican on the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee.

Why do phones need apps? At this year's Mobile World Congress, the future of the smartphone and how we connect were firmly under the microscope. Deutsche Telekom and Brain.ai demoed one such instance at MWC: a smartphone with no apps. It's just an idea for now, but it's prompting an interesting question: Why assume the smartphone of the future has apps at all? But the smartphone industry is slumping, and there's a "need to invigorate the upgrade cycle," Milanesi told BI.

CNN —A new glimpse inside Donald Trump’s inner circle shows how the ex-president’s men and women often confront a fateful dilemma under huge personal pressure.
