In ‘Clipped,’ Cleopatra Coleman Spreads Her Wings
  + stars: | 2024-06-03 | by ( Alexis Soloski | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
Cleopatra Coleman began with red, swirling it toward pink with a fine-tipped brush. An oval appeared on the paper, and then smaller marks joined it — ears, eyebrows, a line for a nose. “I always draw this woman,” Coleman said. “I don’t know why.”This was on a bright May morning and Coleman, a star of the FX limited series “Clipped,” premiering Tuesday on Hulu, was at Happy Medium, an art cafe around the corner from her temporary apartment in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. So this morning, on a day off from filming a new series, “Black Rabbit,” she had taken herself on a date.

Mr. Giuliani’s run-ins with the law have left his life and finances in tatters. Mr. Giuliani has filed for bankruptcy and owes two Georgia women a $148 million judgment from a defamation case. “Anyone who thinks that Mr. Giuliani is off his game in terms of legal acumen is strongly mistaken,” Mr. Aidala said. Like many at the birthday party, Mr. Aidala was displeased by Mr. Trump’s conviction on charges related to hiding hush money paid to a porn star. I supervised judges presiding over a wide spectrum of cases, dealing with complex legal issues, angry victims, difficult defendants and intense media scrutiny. And since Donald Trump was found guilty on 34 counts, Justice Merchan has come under further vicious attack. As a retiree, I was able to attend each day of the Trump trial. Since the indictment over the cover-up of hush-money payments was issued last year, Justice Merchan has been subjected to an unrelenting pressure campaign. Most judges strive to maintain their composure under the greatest of stress, but few succeed — yet Justice Merchan remained cool, calm and collected at every step of the trial.

The author, Megan Bearce, and her husband, Ian, had just moved from Los Angeles to Minneapolis when he got a job offer in New York City in 2010. I heard this question so many times over the 10 years my husband, Ian, flew weekly from our home in Minneapolis to his job in New York City. Ian posted photos and art on the walls of the New York City apartments he stayed in during the week when he supercommuted from Minneapolis. Visits to New York City helped the kids get a glimpse of Ian's life during the week, Megan says. Earlier this year, I wrote about a friend who was attacked and thrown to the ground on a September afternoon, while she was walking toward Borough Hall in Brooklyn to go to the post office. She was on the phone with her mother when a man, whose erratic behavior she had noticed in the distance, pushed her into the street, leaving her with bruises, a chipped tooth and fear new to her after decades of living in New York. At the time, it did not seem as though the assault might be part of a dark emerging trend. But the incident would presage many others — instances in which women in New York were randomly punched on the street in the middle of the day. A few days before the announcement, a 9-year-old girl standing with her mother was punched in the face by a man at Grand Central Station.

“Art is one of our oldest creations (humans invented paint long before the wheel), one of the earliest means of communication (we drew long, long, long, long before we could write), and one of our most universal urges,” she wrote. But when you watch artists making art, it is a physical experience. Different art forms affect the brain and body in different ways. Just as when we are prescribed medications, (it’s true that) types, doses and durations of art work differently for different people. And just one art experience per month can extend your life by 10 years.

Read previewThe chances of Donald Trump spending any time behind bars after a jury found Trump guilty on all counts in his New York hush-money trial are slim to none, legal experts told Business Insider. This story is available exclusively to Business Insider subscribers. Defense attorneys told Business Insider that besides jail time, prosecutors could try to impose a large fine, community service, or probation on the former president. Aidala said if prosecutors "really want to embarrass" the former president "they may ask for community service." Any kind of community service would likely be "private," so Trump couldn't be "out there cleaning a park or picking up garbage," Aidala said.

An Exxon gas station sign is seen in the Brooklyn borough of New York City, on Oct. 6, 2023. Four years ago, Exxon Mobil's reign as the longest-serving component in the Dow Jones Industrial Average abruptly ended when the oil major was replaced by Salesforce in August 2020 in the biggest shake-up in years. That reshuffling of the Dow was seen as a sign of the times, with the energy sector struggling from a total collapse in oil prices into negative territory during the Covid-19 pandemic. Meanwhile, technology stocks booked strong gains during the work-from-home era. The oil major's stock has gained nearly 170% since the August 24, 2020, announcement of its exit from the Dow, while Salesforce has gained just 4% over the same period.

Eighteen teenagers and young men who the authorities said belonged to street gangs were charged on Wednesday with unleashing a wave of gun violence in Brooklyn that killed two 16-year-old boys and injured 10 others over a three-year period. Some of the people charged were as young as 14 when they committed crimes that included firing guns at people, according to prosecutors. During a news conference, Eric Gonzalez, the Brooklyn district attorney, played a series of surveillance videos that showed young men and boys, wearing hoods or masks, opening fire on busy streets, often in broad daylight. One video showed a young couple walking with a stroller on a sidewalk just before shooting erupted. In another clip, people could be seen scattering, running into stores or ducking behind garbage cans to avoid bullets.

The Ingredient That Unites My Favorite Salads
  + stars: | 2024-05-29 | by ( Eric Kim | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
I cleared those plates, tempted every time to sneak a rehydrating taste when there were leftovers. On my last day, the managers said I could order anything I wanted: I sat at a table, a diner for the first time, and ordered the salad. The salads of my youth, the ones I most remember, all have this effect — and they all have cheese. The contrast between cool, anchoring base note (fruit, vegetable or lettuce) and salty, creamy accent (cheese) is what makes a bite of these salads feel like more than just salad. The day I interviewed for my first food-writing job, even before getting the offer, I celebrated with a glass of rosé and a Caesar salad.

When congestion pricing takes effect in New York City later this month, officials say it will create an array of benefits: The system’s tolls will generate revenue for improving mass transit while prompting some drivers to avoid Manhattan, potentially reducing traffic and air pollution, as well as carbon emissions that contribute to climate change. For now, though, it is unclear how much the program will contribute to New York State’s ambitious goal of reducing greenhouse emissions 85 percent by 2050. And some people worry that less air pollution in some areas will be offset by more in others, despite efforts to keep that from happening. According to an environmental assessment by the authority, congestion pricing could decrease air pollution overall in three boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens. The concern is that rerouted traffic could increase it in the Bronx and on Staten Island.

The defense did not call Mr. Weisselberg either, nor did Mr. Trump take the stand in his own defense. And for weeks, Mr. Weisselberg’s absence has loomed large over Mr. Trump’s case, the first criminal trial of an American president. And when Mr. Trump was sworn in as president in 2017, he entrusted Mr. Weisselberg, along with Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, with running his company. Mr. Trump, Mr. Cohen told the jury, “approved” of the arrangement and knew that they would falsify records to cover it up. Over the course of their decades together, Mr. Cohen knew, Mr. Trump and Mr. Weisselberg had become more or less symbiotic.

The 10 books the rich will be reading this summer

That's why J.P. Morgan Private Bank, every May, releases its summer reading list, often serving as a book club for billionaires. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the list, now called the J.P. Morgan Summer Reading List. The 10 books are carefully curated to match the tastes and preoccupations of J.P. Morgan's wealthy clients. It also helps with client events, since authors on the list often agree to do special dinners or speaking events for J.P. Morgan clients. Authors love being on the list as well since J.P. Morgan buys thousands of books to hand out and since clients often refer the books to others.

Here’s why we eat popcorn at the movies
  + stars: | 2024-05-25 | by ( Alicia Wallace | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +11 min
But the perfect (and very profitable) pairing of today wasn’t always the case: For many years, movie theaters wanted nothing to do with the snack. People watch movies in a newly reopened AMC River East theater on Aug. 20, 2020, in Chicago. Popular movies often bring collectible cups and popcorn buckets, or, in industry-speak, Collectible Concession Vehicles (CCVs). The cinema business will continue to evolve, but one thing will remain constant, said Gil of Queen’s University. “Theaters will stop playing movies before they will actually stop selling popcorn.”

AdvertisementAmong my kids' classmates and friends, I can't name a single child born in recent years whose name falls into this category. Related storiesOne of my kids technically has a gender-neutral name, but admittedly, it wasn't an issue when we named him in Germany. Another interesting fact is that common German last names, like Schroeder or Fischer, can't be given as first names in Germany. The reason for these names being rejected is due to child protection grounds, as they are seen by German law as acts of child cruelty. Fortunately, this particular law was never an issue for us — we certainly never intended to give our children names like Stalin or Captain Marvel.
