The US had qualified for the 1998 World Cup in France with ease. “Instantly, it was less about Germany, less about Yugoslavia, more about Iran,” Sampson told CNN Sport. “That was a bit of a distraction.”Over two decades later, the USMNT again faces Iran in the group stages of a World Cup. Gael Cornier/APThe USMNT had to face Germany, then the reigning European champion in its opening match, yet the Iran match, the second group game, was everyone else’s focus. “We had 150 armed police, which was unprecedented for a World Cup match.
The hearing was called by Klobuchar along with Senator Mike Lee, the top Republican on an antitrust panel of the Senate Judiciary Committee. "The hearing will examine the impact of the proposed merger of Kroger and Albertsons, the two largest grocery chains in the country," the statement said. The FTC is expected to aggressively review the deal to ensure it complies with antitrust law. While the two are the largest standalone grocers, Walmart is the market leader. Though in truth they laboured in the first half against a mediocre Mexico team, they celebrated as if they had won the World Cup itself. After scoring the first goal against Mexico, his second of Argentina's three at the tournament, Messi charged towards fans screaming in joy. Many in fact show the two together, arm-in-arm or Maradona looking beatifically down on Messi from heaven. Should Messi go all the way, he will of course directly match Maradona, who led Argentina to a famous 1986 World Cup win including his famous "Hand of God" and best-ever tournament goals against England en route. Even Messi looked slow and made basic errors prior to scoring against Mexico and relaxing into the player everyone knows.
In Beijing, hundreds of mostly young people demonstrated in the commercial heart of the city well into the small hours of Monday. Freedom of expression, freedom of the press, freedom of arts, freedom of movement, personal freedoms. A security guard tries to cover a protest slogan against zero-Covid on the campus of Peking University in Beijing. “Open your eyes and look at the world, dynamic zero-Covid is a lie,” the protest slogan at Peking University read. At Tsinghua University, another elite university in Beijing, hundreds of students gathered on a square to protest against zero-Covid and censorship.
[1/2] Police officers are deployed as fishermen protest near the entrance of the proposed Vizhinjam Port in the southern state of Kerala, India, November 9, 2022. "We won't let them in," a protestor was seen screaming at police officers near the port entrance site. The Adani Group has said the project was in full compliance with all laws and that many studies in recent years have rejected allegations linking the project to shoreline erosion. The Kerala state government says erosion has occurred due to natural disasters. A previous attempt by Adani in October to move trucks out of the port also failed.

REUTERS/Violeta Santos MouraMADRID, Nov 25 (Reuters) - Thousands of people took to the streets in Madrid and Barcelona on Friday evening in marches to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. Since 2003, when statistics started to officially count fatalities, 1,171 women have died as a result of gender violence in Spain, according to the Ministry of Equality. The law, known as the "only yes means yes" law, classifies any non-consensual sex as rape but also sets lighter minimum sentences for certain sexual crimes. Chants of "only yes means yes" rang through the crowds on Friday evening.

A $900 million project to build India’s first container transhipment port has been stalled due to protests by the region’s fishing community who believe it will destroy their livelihood. The fishing community erected the shelter after years of failed efforts to get the Kerala government to intervene while watching the coast steadily erode. "This is a matter of providing jobs to the many localities here," said Mukkola G Prabhakaran, a Kerala state council member in Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party. Accusing the Kerala state police of being "mute spectators", the Adani conglomerate has also called for federal police to be brought in.
The increased footfall from discount-hunting shoppers helped the company lift its annual sales outlook and post a strong third quarter. An increase in prices at Dollar Tree banner stores to $1.25 from the traditional $1 supported margins during the period, but company executives said the lack of flexibility to adjust prices could lead to margin pressures in the short term. The price cuts, however, helped Family Dollar post its strongest quarterly same-store sales jump since 2020 and grow quarterly traffic for the first time in three years. Dollar Tree now expects annual per-share profit at the lower half of its previously estimated range of $7.10 to $7.40. The company raised its forecast for full-year net sales to between $28.14 billion and $28.28 billion, from $27.85 billion to $28.10 billion earlier.
Now, with mass protests, many would prefer it withdrew from the World Cup being held just across the Gulf from their homeland. Some Iranian fans who went to Qatar for the World Cup made no secret of their solidarity with the unrest. In the Iranian capital Tehran, some banners of the national team have been burned by angry protesters. Pejman Zarji, a 38-year-old sports coach who was in Qatar for the World Cup, said the Iranian team belonged to the people not the government. There’s something really important to understand (now) - 'Team Melli' is what we call the Iran team, it's the team of the people before being the team of the government," he said.
[1/2] Climate activists stand next to banners as they take part in a protest during the COP27 climate summit, in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, November 18, 2022. As climate change has accelerated the rise of sea levels, Vanuatu and other low-lying island states and coastal communities face particular risk from storms and flooding. An advisory opinion by the court would not be binding in any jurisdiction, but could underpin future climate negotiations by clarifying what financial obligations countries have on climate change, and define it as a human rights issue. At a demonstration on Wednesday rallying support for the ICJ to take an advisory opinion, some of the law students were joined by allies from different countries. An ICJ opinion would send a clear signal to governments that hesitate to take decisive action at climate talks, said Solomon Yeo from the Solomon Islands, another Pacific island law student.
A house in Amsterdam owned by sanctioned Russian oligarch Arkady Volozh was occupied by activists. Despite the Yandex billionaire's best efforts, a judge ruled that the squatters can stay. Volozh is not the first sanctioned oligarch to have his European property overtaken. Squatters moved into the five-story luxury house belonging to billionaire Arkady Volozh on October 27, according to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf. This is far from the first protest action in the properties of high-profile sanctioned Russian figures.
Macy's on Thursday raised its earnings forecast for the year after its third-quarter results topped Wall Street expectations. The company stood by its revenue guidance for the year as it faces a tougher sale backdrop this holiday season. But Macy's said the figure was up when compared to the the third quarter of 2019, before the pandemic. It raised its annual adjusted earnings per share forecast to $4.07 to $4.27 per share, up from its previous range of $4 to $4.20. Target slashed its forecast for the holiday quarter, saying weaker sales have continued into November.

REUTERS/Costas BaltasATHENS, Nov 17 (Reuters) - Thousands of Greeks marched through central Athens on Thursday to mark the anniversary of a violently quashed student uprising in 1973 that helped topple the military junta which then ruled the country. Brief tension broke out between police and protesters before the march reached the heavily guarded parliament on Syntagma square. At the front of the procession, youths held a blood-stained flag that belonged to the students engaged in the 1973 revolt. Earlier, people laid wreaths and carnations at the Athens Polytechnic, site of a bloody clamp-down on Nov. 17 1973 when tanks smashed through the gates to crush the revolt that heralded the end of the junta.
ATHENS, Nov 17 (Reuters) - A Greek court has acquitted three activists detained in October 2021 after unfurling banners at the Athens Acropolis opposing the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, their lawyer and activists said on Thursday. Those acquitted were 19-year-old Tibetan student Tsela Zoksang, 22-year-old Hong Kongese-American Joey Siu and a 35-year old Vietnamese-American activist. They had staged a brief protest at the Acropolis in the Greek capital, holding up a Tibetan flag and a banner reading "Free Hong Kong - Revolution" at a scaffolding surrounding part of the monument. The protest took place hours before a dress rehearsal of the torch-lighting ceremony for the Games in Greece's Olympia, site of the ancient Olympics. "Today's result is a huge victory for the right to peaceful protest and for the Tibetan and Hong Kongese people, said Michael Polak, director of the group."

"It would result in more intensive livestock production that would require larger areas of land to produce the animal feed, putting pressure on forest land," Reisinger told Reuters. Banner airplanes were trolling Donald Trump as a loser on Tuesday ahead of his "HUGE announcement." Trump is expected to announce his third presidential bid at his Mar-a-Lago home in Florida. One plane was observed near his Mar-a-Lago home in Florida with a message calling him a "3X bigly loser." Even his close ally, Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, said most Republican senators think he should wait. Trump's GOP allies have reportedly suggested that it would be better for him to wait until after Georgia's December 6 runoff election.
The banners have been cropping up at German soccer games for years. In gigantic letters painted across bedsheets, they decry lives lost, bureaucratic corruption, and alleged human rights abuses, all with the same objective. The German national soccer team, they argue, has no business traveling to the World Cup in Qatar. Over the past two weeks, with the tournament kickoff looming on Nov. 20, the messaging has only intensified. Shame on you.”
[1/5] Demonstrators march against the electoral reform proposed by Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador and in support of the National Electoral Institute (INE) in Mexico City, Mexico, November 13, 2022. In the past, Lopez Obrador pursued contentious policies by pitching referendums - including on the cancellation of a part-built airport - to claim popular mandates for his objectives. Organizers put the number at hundreds of thousands but some political allies of Lopez Obrador gave far lower estimates. Lopez Obrador posted a video message on his Twitter as he celebrated his 69th birthday - but did not address the protests. Videos posted on social media purportedly showed the national basketball team refraining from singing the national anthem during a match with China in Tehran on Friday - widely seen as another show of support from athletes for the protests. The activist HRANA news agency said 336 protesters had been killed in the unrest as of Friday, including 52 minors. Earlier this week, videos posted on social media showed the national water polo team failing to sing the national anthem at a competition in Thailand. 'STEP UP THE PRESSURE'On Friday, a cleric in the northwestern city of Urmia called during prayers for the punishment of athletes who refrained from singing the national anthem, according to Iranian news agencies. "We want to continue to step up the pressure on the Revolutionary Guard Corps and the political leadership," he said in a video posted on Twitter.
Holding banners and chanting slogans, protesters demanded climate action. "COPs are not designed to face climate change because it would need more participation from civil society, less participation from lobbyists from the fossil industry," said Pedro Franco, a 27-year-old student. Joao Duarte, 23, also pointed a finger at governments for favouring the "monetary interests" of big companies instead of putting climate change at the top of the political agenda. "What we do or do not do in this decade will have a great impact on climate security." CNN Business —Apple has limited the use of the AirDrop wireless file sharing function on devices in China, just weeks after reports that some protesters had used the popular feature to spread messages critical of the Chinese government. Users not in China face no such restriction and are able to receive files wirelessly from anyone, including people who are not contacts. Apple (AAPL) told CNN Business the new feature will be expanded globally in the coming year. Reaction in Chinese media to the software update was mixed. But others criticized Apple on Chinese social media.

Rodriguez was one of several Hispanic voters and activists who spoke to Noticias Telemundo about their mobilization as voters or organizers against recent legislation they see as anti-LGBTQ. That is why we are committed to strengthening the LGBTQ vote, which is a bloc that has already demonstrated its electoral power." According to a study by the Williams Institute at UCLA, about 9 million LGBTQ adults were registered to vote in the 2020 election, 22% of them Latino. But for Jorge Gutiérrez, a DACA recipient who came to the U.S. at age 10, discussing the rights of LGBTQ people is fundamental. In his experience, the attacks on minorities and the LGBTQ community have intensified over the years.
ATHENS, Nov 9 (Reuters) - Greek workers went on a day-long strike on Wednesday, demanding higher wages to cope with surging inflation, as Europe's soaring energy prices and living costs trigger industrial action and protests across the continent. In Athens, thousands of people marched in the second 24-hour walkout this year over rising inflation, some holding up banners that read, "No to layoffs, no to pay cuts." The General Confederation of Greek Workers union (GSEE), which represents private sector workers, said unions had called the strike in protest "against the inflation suffocating Greek households, the jungle-like conditions in the labour market," referring to labour laws. HILLTOP, West Bank, Nov 7 (Reuters) - High atop a rocky hill in the occupied West Bank, Israeli settlers exhilarated by a resounding right-wing election triumph surveyed a landscape dotted with Palestinian villages, scouting new spots to put down roots. But among ideological settlers who see themselves as pioneers redeeming Biblical heartland promised by God, hopes are already high for budgets, construction and infrastructure to keep their enterprise thriving. "I sense a chill down my spine coming back to the very places where my ancestors lived," said Baruch Gordon from the settlement of Bet El, where Religious Zionism election banners dot the streets. More than 450,000 people, or less than 5% of Israel's population, are Jewish settlers in the West Bank, home to about 3 million Palestinians who exercise limited self-rule there. About 80% of Bet El's votes went to Religious Zionism, data from the Knesset's election committee showed, and almost 10% to Netanyahu's Likud.
