Read previewVice President Kamala Harris' campaign is in the process of choosing her running mate, and who she chooses will provide insight into her battle plan for November. With 20 electoral votes, winning the battleground state will likely be a crucial part of both former President Donald Trump and Harris' campaign. Choosing Shapiro, the state's governor, who has proven he can win in Pennsylvania, could significantly bolster Harris' ticket there, Gift said. Kevin Fahey, an assistant professor of political science at the University of Nottingham, agrees but told BI that a Shapiro pick may indicate some trepidation in Harris' campaign. Plus, he's already been an attack dog against Trump's running mate, Sen. JD Vance, going after him for his Appalachian credentials.

CNN —Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez of New Jersey will resign his seat effective August 20, according to a copy of his resignation letter obtained by CNN. Menendez had faced mounting pressure from within his own party to resign or face the threat of expulsion from the Senate. Receipt of Menendez’s resignation letter was announced Tuesday on the Senate floor in a brief exchange between Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Presiding Officer Sen. Peter Welch, a Democrat from Vermont. “In light of this guilty verdict, Senator Menendez must now do what is right for his constituents, the Senate, and our country, and resign,” Schumer said in a statement. CNN —With President Joe Biden’s support unleashing a flood of endorsements from many prominent Democrats across the country, Kamala Harris has emerged as the favorite to take his place as the party’s nominee for president. The campaign formally amended filings with the Federal Election Commission to rename its principal committee and declare Harris a candidate for president. Cooper previously waved off speculation that he might be on the shortlist for vice presidential nominees if Biden steps aside and Harris becomes the nominee. “Are you at least open to the possibility of being a running mate to Vice President Harris?,” Beshear was asked on MSNBC Monday morning. “I’m not going anywhere.”Whitmer, first elected governor in 2018, emerged as a prominent executive during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Democratic congressional leaders had remained quiet so far — but there were signs that could soon change. Massachusetts Rep. Katherine Clark and California Rep. Pete Aguilar, the second- and third-ranking House Democrats, endorsed Harris on Monday morning. The Clintons, in a statement Sunday, endorsed Harris; Obama did not, deferring to the party’s process. In those phone calls, Harris made clear that while she was grateful for Biden’s endorsement, she planned to earn the Democratic nomination in her own right. Longtime Democratic operative Donna Brazile said that she was in the process of gathering delegates to support Harris.

In today's big story, President Joe Biden ended his reelection bid . The president ended his reelection campaign on Sunday, the culmination of mounting pressure from his party after a disastrous debate last month. Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump said in a post on Truth Social that "Crooked Joe Biden was not fit to run for President." Biden's reelection campaign has quickly pivoted to serve Harris, making it an uphill battle for any Democrat looking to challenge her , writes Business Insider's Brent D. Griffiths. Many have made comparisons to the 1968 Democratic convention , which was a contested convention after President Lyndon B. Johnson ended his reelection campaign earlier that year.

At Amazon, employees are taught that good leaders "are right, a lot." That doesn't mean your boss knows more than you do, or that their first ideas are always the best. Ironically, Jassy sees leaders get that concept "wrong" with some frequency, he said. An idea that comes from your boss isn't necessarily the best idea possible, he noted. CNN —Kamala Harris has spent much more of her life as a prosecutor than as a senator or vice president – and that is exactly how she is now going to run against Donald Trump. The vice president had expected that to be part of her role making the case for Biden. “As a former prosecutor, Vice President Harris has a lot of experience holding convicted felons accountable,” said Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, a former primary opponent in the 2020 Democratic race who quickly endorsed Harris after the news of Biden’s decision broke. “The prosecutor approach is really about just deconstructing an issue,” Harris told CNN in an exclusive interview after a campaign stop in Las Vegas in April. As of late Monday, there did not appear to be any potentially serious challengers for the Democratic nomination who had not already endorsed Harris. On the contrary, Democratic governors and senators and House members have been lining up to endorse Harris, instead of waiting to see whether any potential alternatives emerge. The refusal by Democrats to entertain these calls from donors who want to slow down the nomination process is a sharp contrast to how many donors successfully lobbied lawmakers to call on Biden to drop out of the race. Despite a few big donors pushing for a pause on the process, the Democratic party on Monday was full steam ahead with its new frontrunner. Gretchen Whitmer — all of whom are now contenders in the veepstakes to become Harris' running mate.

Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., is seen in the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday, September 6, 2023. Independent Sen. Joe Manchin on Sunday called on President Joe Biden to exit the race against former President Donald Trump. Along with Manchin, 36 Democratic lawmakers, including four senators, have called on Biden to exit the race and allow a new nominee to take the helm of the ticket. Over the past week, Manchin had been hinting at his slipping support for Biden as the presumptive Democratic nominee. Throughout the Biden administration, Manchin has positioned himself as a conservative Democrat, sometimes opposing large parts of the president's agenda.

Within hours of Biden dropping out of the race and endorsing his vice president on Sunday, Trump’s campaign managers had released a blistering statement tying Harris to the administration’s policies. Instead, Trump’s team had orchestrated an exacting campaign around defeating Biden. But it was soon widely acknowledged within Trump’s camp that Biden bowing out would also throw their own campaign into uncertainty. Trump’s campaign also began privately ramping up and testing new lines of attack on Harris — someone they had largely ignored since she was sworn in as vice president. While polling has shown Harris is the best known among possible Democratic candidates to replace Biden, Trump’s advisers and allies maintain that most Americans don’t know much about her, creating an opening to define her to the public.

One, in particular, summed up the mood among Biden’s donors, he said. After weeks of turmoil over the future of the Democratic ticket, Kessler said the campaign donors he’s courted as a bundler for Biden’s campaign are turning their full attention to Harris and committing to work on her behalf. On Sunday afternoon, the Biden campaign filed paperwork with federal election regulators, transforming itself into the “Harris for President” committee. Lindelof was among the contributors who had called on fellow Democratic donors to stop writing campaign checks. But Amazon, which has also spent four years opening Amazon Fresh stores and trying to build its grocery delivery business, hasn't been as disruptive to existing players like Walmart and Kroger as some feared it would be. To better serve the middle, Amazon could consider acquiring a grocery chain that already exists to boost its store network, Grewal said. Besides selling groceries, Amazon could use the stores to fill pick-up and delivery orders, much as they already do with Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods.
