David Willard has been checking the grounds of Chicago's lakefront exhibition center for dead birds for 40 years. Researchers estimate hundreds of millions of birds die in window strikes in the United States each year. When they see plants or bushes through windows or reflected in them, they head for them, killing themselves in the process. Pre-dawn rain forced the birds to drop to lower altitudes, where they found the McCormick Center’s lights on, Willard said. The first buildings at McCormick Center were constructed in 1959.

Analyst Steven Alexopoulos upgraded the stock to overweight from neutral and maintained his price target of $40. Shares of Live Oak Bancshares are down more than 15% over the past month. "The recent sell-off provides us with the entry point that we were waiting for," Alexopoulos said in a Thursday note. "With Live Oak now on a mission to cross-sell operating deposit accounts to its small business customers, we see a significant opportunity to improve its growth as well as return profiles," the analyst said.

Growth in long-term fundamentals should outweigh short-term headwinds for HP , according to Bank of America. The bank double upgraded shares of the technology company to a buy from underperform rating Tuesday. The new forecast points to more than 28% upside potential from HP's Monday closing price of $25.67. The analyst cited tighter cost controls, growth from an improving PC outlook and increased operating profit dollars. "[Positive] drivers include an improving PC market backdrop, improved profitability from cost actions and stable to higher free cash flow over the next several years."

We're talking about this year's rise in bond yields, oil prices and the dollar — all at the time same. Nevertheless, bond yields, oil prices and the dollar always have far-reaching implications for the stock market. "The higher yields, that's what's been pressuring the equity market," Wharton School professor Jeremy Siegel said Monday on CNBC. In early September, the two countries announced their supply cuts would extend through year-end, a surprise decision that added upward pressure on oil prices. The picture is less clear-cut when considering the impact higher oil prices can have on consumers and non-energy companies.

We're be buying 200 shares of Coterra Energy (CTRA) at roughly $26.79 each. Following Monday's trade, Jim Cramer's Charitable Trust will own 1,750 shares of CTRA, increasing its weighting in the portfolio to 1.7% from 1.5%. We also do not believe shares are adequately reflecting the rise in natural gas prices over the past week and a half. Remember, Coterra's business is about 50-50 nat gas and oil . By last year, with sanctions elsewhere tightening, Russia was buying more than a quarter of Japan's used-car exports for an average price of almost $8,200. That was more than double the price in 2020, when Russia took about 15% of Japan's used-car exports. Those sales had been on track to top $1.9 billion for all of 2023 before Japan imposed its own tougher sanctions, trade data show. A system of mandatory inspections pushes the cost of maintaining used cars higher for customers in Japan. Battery recycling firm 4R Energy has seen a "significant" tailwind from declining used-car prices, including the Nissan Leaf, said chief executive Yutaka Horie.

2023's surge in technology stocks fizzled in September as rising rates put a heavy dent in the artificial intelligence-fueled rally . Over the next few weeks, Deepwater Asset Management's Gene Munster is keeping an eye on September's consumer price index and nonfarm payrolls report ahead of the start of big technology earnings later in the month. "The good news is that this should right itself once the September quarter earnings come up." Sean Sun, a portfolio manager at Thornburg Investment Management, likened the earnings season to a "gut check" on AI beneficiaries. But these drawdowns could offer opportunities for long-term investors to snatch up technology bets at bargain prices, said Nancy Tengler.

However, Citi thinks the stock has been "caught in the storm" and sees upside potential ahead. Following the failure of Silicon Valley Bank, Zions got caught in a broader panic among regional banks, which led to deposit outflows and funding pressures. 31, 2023, the bank's core deposits fell by nearly 10% to about $64 billion, according to Citi. "ZION has been impacted by deposit outflows, but we find that ZION's core deposits (excluding broker deposits) ranks second lowest on cumulative beta on total deposits so far this cycle. Here's what it might take for the 10-year yield go to 5%

Can the 10-year yield go to 5%? The primary factor that would move the 10-year towards 5%, Braizinha says, is a reacceleration of the economy. A soft landing (still growth, but with lower inflation) won't do it. Braizinha notes that the soft landing is still his base case and would "push back" against a 5% 10-year yield. He also notes that "the degree of conviction" around a stronger economy "seems to have deteriorated."

The Biden administration also allowed nearly 500,000 Venezuelan migrants who are already in the country to seek work permits and protection from deportation. The administration yielded to pressure from leaders in New York, where the recent arrival of more than 100,000 migrants in New York City has overwhelmed shelters and strained resources. Migrants like Mr. Soto and his mother are arriving on a tailwind of stories of friends and relatives who reached New York or Chicago months earlier. Many also believe false claims from smugglers and social media that migrants would definitely be able to remain in the United States if they could make it in. “The smuggling organizations are spreading misinformation with a global reach that they couldn’t do before,” said John Modlin, the Border Patrol’s Tucson sector chief, who is coordinating the response to border crossings in Arizona and California.

At the same time, legacy media companies face off against another well-known demon: cord-cutting. Technology companies such as Apple and Amazon can lean on their respective hardware and e-commerce businesses, said Paul Fanelli, a research analyst at Gabelli Funds. Even so, Wall Street sees only a handful of pure-play winners in the TV and streaming space winning consumer attention over the long run. Already, the technology companies have shown some promise. Consumers are increasingly forgoing pay TV packages from cable companies and opting for bundles from companies like Alphabet, he said.
