CNN —After the thrill of winning successive Women’s World Cup titles, the 2023 tournament – so far – has brought the US team very much down to earth with a bump. For a team that has been so historically dominant at the Women’s World Cup, performances throughout the 2023 edition so far have been underwhelming for women’s soccer’s most dynastic team. Fans of the US team get ready for the Women's World Cup group game against Portugal. 3 ranked in the world by FIFA, has plenty of World Cup history. Sweden drew with the US in 2015 and also beat them in 2011 – the last time any team defeated the USWNT inside regulation at a World Cup.

CNN —The US Women’s National Team was a post width away from exiting the Women’s World Cup at the group stage, but survived a late scare to earn a goalless draw against Portugal and reach the last 16. Defeat for the USWNT – a team aiming for a third consecutive world title – would have ended its participation in the tournament. The gap between the top-ranked teams and others has closed significantly in the four years since the last Women’s World Cup. “What this World Cup shows now is that the women’s game is growing a lot and because of that you have these kinds of results that before the World Cup nobody believed would happen,” Portugal coach Francisco Neto told reporters. “We had our World Cup on the line,” veteran Megan Rapinoe, who came on as a second-half substitute, admitted afterwards.

Etienne joined Haiti’s youth set-up at age 14 and represented the team at the U-20 Women’s World Cup in 2018 – the first time a Caribbean nation has appeared in that tournament. And he always used to tell me the stories about how they were trying to qualify for the World Cup,” Pierre-Jerome said. The World Cup debutantes need a win to have any chance of making it to the Round of 16 – and for results elsewhere to go their way. HONG KONG/NEW YORK, July 31 (Reuters) - For all the excitement whipped up in China's markets by the Politburo last week, foreign investors say policymakers' words will have to be matched by substantive action to clean up an ailing property sector before confidence recovers. "The question is what resources they will deploy, because China is still very focused on de-leveraging and preventing financial risks." Absolutely, and urgently," said Qi Wang, the chief investment officer (CIO) of MegaTrust Investment (HK), a boutique China fund manager specializing in domestic Chinese A-shares. Mark Dong, general manager of Minority Asset Management, based in Hong Kong, has reduced his exposure to the property sector. The safest bets in the sector, he said, had come down to state-owned companies such as China Resources Land (1109.HK) and Poly Property (0119.HK).

“What you’re talking about is a situation, or potential situation, where in American terms, the United States’ Supreme Court would take a constitutional amendment and say that it’s unconstitutional. The law, which would limit the power of Israel’s Supreme Court, is an amendment to one of Israel’s Basic Laws, which exist in place of a formal constitution. The Supreme Court has said that it will hear appeals against the law in September. Israel’s new law strips the Supreme Court of the ability to reject some government decisions on the basis of the “reasonableness” standard. It was the first time the USWNT trailed in a Women’s World Cup match since 2011 in the quarterfinal against Brazil. It's half time at the Eden Park Stadium in Auckland, where underdogs New Zealand have held firm for the first 45 minutes against former World Cup winners Norway. The Scandinavians are among the tournament favorites this year, but despite dominating much of the play have been unable to break through the home side's defense and create a clear-cut chance. But it hasn't been all defending from New Zealand. The home side have enjoyed several threatening moments of their own going forward, much to the delight of the sold-out home crowd. In the final moments of the half, New Zealand kept the pressure on, with several opportunities in the box.

Led by coach Alen Stajcic, who formerly coached the Australian Women’s National Team, the squad will make history no matter the result of Friday’s game. ‘The word is spreading’Before joining the national team, California born Sarina Bolden – whose penalty kick clinched the island nation’s spot at the tournament – had never been to the Philippines. The 27-year-old is hopeful her country’s presence in the World Cup will promote soccer both in the Philippines – where other sports such as basketball and boxing remain more popular – and among the Filipino diaspora. In 2022, she was a key part of the Philippine National team that progressed to the knockout stages of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup for the first time. Bolden said she’s already seen awareness and interest grow in the Philippines following the team’s on field successes and historic qualification for the World Cup.

In interviews with Reuters, some community leaders said they would demand more profits be channeled their way, while others said they would resist any new lithium mining at all. Boric's plan envisions expanding mining with public-private partnerships controlled by a new state lithium company. Both Espindola and Mondaca said a majority of community members oppose expanded lithium mining in the region. It said it takes relationships with Indigenous communities seriously and that is why Boric met with them in person. Yermin Basques, president of Toconao, said he was pushing for the community to receive a greater share of the profits and be a "strategic partner" in the state lithium company.

Angelo Mozilo, a founder of Countrywide Financial who presided over that lending giant’s rapid ascent and then its collapse during the financial crisis of 2008, died on Sunday. His death, in the Santa Barbara, Calif., area, was announced in a statement by the Mozilo Family Foundation, the family’s philanthropic organization. Countrywide was a major player in the run-up to the housing crisis, when looser financial regulations enabled lenders to aggressively sell risky mortgage products to prospective homeowners, contributing to a bubble in housing prices. Mr. Mozilo, the son of a Bronx butcher and who worked his way through Fordham University, became one of the most recognized executives associated with the crisis. Motivated by his modest beginnings, he had built Countrywide into one of the nation’s largest mortgage lenders by the early 2000s.

When you sit at a campfire and look up at the stars, even the tiniest pinpricks of light that you see are massive furnaces, producing intense heat. But hidden among these infernal embers are celestial bodies so dim that they’re invisible to the naked eye. One such star, a brown dwarf smaller than Jupiter, recently became the coldest star ever to be detected with a radio telescope. At a paltry 797 degrees Fahrenheit, it’s cooler than the average campfire: an ideal star for roasting marshmallows. The existence of brown dwarfs was hypothesized 60 years ago, but “they were very hard to find, because they’re not very bright,” Dr. Murphy said.

"Huge amounts of munitions are being fired and used," he said at a panel during the NATO summit In Vilnius, Lithuania. Wallace told CNN on Wednesday that because of the shortages, he understands why the US opted to provide controversial cluster munitions to Ukraine in an attempt to fill the gap. Asha, a homemaker in the capital who asked to be referred to only by her first name, told CNN the increase has hit her seven-member family hard. Of the tomatoes that were harvested, over 90% were infected by seed-born viruses, Gadve told CNN, which further exacerbated the supply shortage. Devinder Sharma, an India-based agriculture policy expert, told CNN the current shortage was also caused in part by farmers throwing away their tomatoes because no one was buying them.
