The national survey and restrictions on foreign access are part of new regulations on China’s genetic resources, which came into effect in July. The national genetic surveyBiobanking in China – meaning the collection of biological samples – is still “very fragmented,” and in an “embryonic stage,” said Zhang. But these concerns aren’t new – and the national genetic survey seems to be geared more toward scientific research than other purposes, several experts agreed. But China has another motive, too: establishing what some experts call “genomic sovereignty,” meaning full control of the genetic material within their country. While many other countries also have laws regulating the use and transfer of their population’s genetic material, few are as strict as China’s.

Customers shop for handguns at the Des Moines Fairgrounds Gun Show at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines, Iowa, U.S. March 11, 2023. REUTERS/Jonathan Ernst/File PhotoAug 9 (Reuters) - A federal appeals court on Wednesday ruled that a decades-old law prohibiting users of illegal drugs from owning firearms was unconstitutional as applied to the case of a marijuana user, the latest fallout from a U.S. Supreme Court ruling last year that expanded gun rights. Circuit Court of Appeals concluded that the federal law violated a Mississippi man's right to "keep and bear arms" under the U.S. Constitution's Second Amendment. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration did not administer a drug test, though Daniels admitted he sometimes smoked marijuana, which federal law prohibits. While his case was pending, the conservative-majority Supreme Court in June 2022 declared for the first time that the Second Amendment protects an individual's right to carry a handgun in public for self-defense.

CNN —Making water more accessible to kids leads to an increase in hydration and a decrease in children being overweight, according to a new study. The study, published Monday in the journal Pediatrics, included more than 1,200 students across 18 schools in California’s Bay Area. Half of the schools were gifted water dispensers in the cafeteria and water-bottle filling stations in areas of high traffic, Patel said. “I always tell people, drink water first — as that will reduce a person’s thirst and likelihood that they will drink sugary drinks. “If we really care about kids’ health, we won’t give them health information with a side of body shame, because we know weight stigma hurts kids’ health,” Hanson said.

When I brought up global warming, he’d often try to comfort me: to wrap me in a hug, cue up an old episode of “Seinfeld,” offer a CBD gummy. I struggled to tell him that I didn’t need anesthesia or answers, I just wanted a relationship where we shared more of the same inquiries. If relationships depend on a shared fantasy of the future, then global warming does more than unsettle our environment — it creates uncertainty in our interpersonal ones. This time, I’m swallowing my fear of sounding too anxious and am talking about climate change early on. But I’ve found that talking about how global warming affects our lives, however casually, becomes a sort of canary in the coal mine for learning about a person’s broader beliefs and behaviors.

CNN —A federal appeals court upheld the child pornography conviction of former reality TV star Josh Duggar, rejecting his arguments for a new trial, court documents show. Duggar was sentenced last year to 12 years in federal prison after being found guilty of receipt of child pornography and possession of child pornography. Duggar reportedly asked federal agents serving a warrant, “Has somebody been downloading child pornography,” before they were able to give him further explanation of the warrant, according to court documents. Duggar ultimately decided not to call him to the stand, however, because the district court ruled that any mention of the employee’s prior conviction was off-limits,” the panel said in its decision. The appellate judges noted that the district court tried to strike a balance by allowing the former employee to testify but blocking mention of the prior sex crime.

But after a second check from the blood pressure machine, and taking his own blood pressure at home, it had returned to much more acceptable levels. At the hospital, his first blood pressure cuff had been too small, and it was changed only at his request. Now, a new clinical trial highlights how much an improperly sized blood pressure cuff can distort blood pressure readings taken by automated blood pressure devices. But frequently, only regular-sized cuffs are used to take someone’s blood pressure, even though clinical guidelines recommend using cuffs suited for a person’s arm circumference. Either way, experts say, a one-size-fits-all approach can skew blood pressure readings, interfering with core metrics that doctors use to monitor and treat heart conditions.

Gaslighting: What it really is and how to address it
  + stars: | 2023-08-07 | by ( Kristen Rogers | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +9 min
The concept of gaslighting originated from the 1944 film “Gaslight” and the 1938 play on which it was based. Signs you’re being gaslitThere are other common misconceptions about the nature of gaslighting, experts said. What pushes these behaviors into gaslighting territory has to do with what the person you’re dealing with says and their intentions behind it. The degree to which a person gaslights someone else can vary, but gaslighting is always emotional abuse, whether intentional or not, experts said. Talking to a therapist can help you get an objective perspective and see more clearly any signs of gaslighting behavior and psychological abuse, Kennedy said.

Every Worldcoin orb contains a camera designed to record images of a person’s irises. The orbs convert those scans into bits of numerical code, which are supposed to serve as a new type of digital ID. They are promoting the orbs as a possible foundation for universal basic income, a welfare system in which everyone receives guaranteed payments, and argue that iris IDs will help distinguish real people from robots. CNN —An Israeli patrolman was shot and killed in Tel Aviv on Saturday night by a Palestinian gunman who was also shot and killed, Israeli authorities said. Israel Police Commissioner Yaakov Shabtai said two Tel Aviv municipal patrol bikers noticed the suspect and called on him to stop, prompting him to pull out a pistol and shoot one of them. The second patrolman pulled out his own gun, chased the attacker and shot him. Both the wounded officer and the gunman were taken to Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center – Ichilov – which first announced the gunman was dead and later confirmed the officer’s death. In a statement released on Twitter, now known as X, the State Department said:“We strongly condemn today’s terrorist attack in Tel Aviv that killed one and wounded two others – as well as other recent terrorist attacks against Israelis.

When Oregon was getting ready to vote on whether to decriminalize all drugs in 2020, I was covering the story for Vox. During my interviews with the leaders of the decriminalization campaign, they often cited Portugal. Even as Portugal ended prison time for drug possession, it created a unique system that pushed people to stop using drugs — sometimes with the continued threat of penalties, like the revocation of a person’s professional license. Oregon didn’t plan to enact similarly tough penalties, and advocates for decriminalization did not have a clear explanation for why their law would work as well as Portugal’s. Our conversations left me wondering whether Oregon could repeat Portugal’s successes if the decriminalization initiative passed.

Even when fear seems entirely justified, its expression can be hard to understand, inspired by so many variables. A poll conducted by The New York Times in January 1985, a few weeks after the Goetz shootings, found that half the city’s residents believed that crime was the worst thing about living in New York. A majority expressed support for what Mr. Goetz had done. In the days after the shootings, while Mr. Goetz was at large and the tabloids pumped out day after day of panic-feeding content, the “subway vigilante” emerged as a folk hero to New Yorkers. Some offered to cover his $500,000 bail (he refused); others suggested that he run for mayor.

The bewilderment stems from Mr. Musk’s move last month to rebrand Twitter, which he owns, as X. The rebranding has been hair-raising for Twitter fans, who embraced the company’s iconic blue-and-white bird logo and used a bird-related lexicon when talking about the platform. A tweet referred to a post; tweeting was a verb for posting, and sharing another person’s post was known as retweeting. Some people have wondered if the X name will stick, especially with the word tweets still appearing on the site. The app’s home button is also still shaped like a birdhouse, and the company’s website — at least for now — remains Twitter.com.

Fortunately, the judge assigned to the case, US District Judge Tanya Chutkan, has the necessary experience and background to oversee a public trial that is fair and respectful, especially for this defendant. She is, in fact, a judge with an ingrained commitment to defendants’ rights and one who recognizes the danger of overly aggressive prosecutors. At PDS, Chutkan rose to the top ranks and was tasked with providing the most zealous representation to her clients, regardless of the seriousness or heinous nature of the charges. Chutkan will not decide the verdict in Trump’s trial; that will be the role for a jury of his peers. Nonetheless, we believe that all Americans should accept — as we have in past instances — that this judge is pursuing fairness and justice in the courtroom.

CNN —American women have a problem with booze. The messaging around women and drinking has reflected women’s shift toward the dysfunctional, which may then create a vicious cycle as more women see problem drinking cast as cheeky, fun or normal. And more women may now be paying the price for this normalization of alcohol abuse. I suspect many of them are turning to alcohol as one way to dull the painful reality of isolation. None of that will end alcohol abuse, which has been a centuries-long problem.

CNN —As little as one alcoholic drink a day increased systolic blood pressure — the top number in a blood pressure reading — even in men and women with no existing hypertension, a new study found. The negative impact of alcohol on systolic blood pressure continued to rise over the years, the study found, even in men and women who drank little each day. Blood pressure and cardiovascular healthBlood pressure is measured in units of millimeters of mercury (abbreviated as mmHg), and written as two numbers, one above the other. No amount of alcohol is good for blood pressure, study says. “However, this review found relatively low levels of alcohol impacted blood pressure,” said Freeman, who was not involved with the research.

He was found guilty of kidnapping resulting in death and intentionally killing an unborn child, prosecutors said in a press release. Keishla Rodríguez Ortiz and her unborn child were found dead in the San José Lagoon in Puerto Rico on May 1, 2021. On the morning of Rodríguez Ortiz’s death, Verdejo-Sánchez carried out a premeditated plan to kill her and her unborn child, according to the release. Heat stroke is one of the most common and most deadly heat-related illnesses, and it becomes a significant problem during heat waves. Even healthy young people can get heat stroke, particularly if they are working or exercising outside when temperatures are high. Sorensen’s Global Consortium is trying to make it so every health care provider considers weather as a factor in health problems. “It doesn’t have to get as hot in Northern states as compared to Southern states, presumably because of differences in societal, physiological, cultural, health care adaptations,” Dresser said. Harvard is also piloting a program that will send targeted alerts to nurses, doctors and other health care professionals at clinics in areas with dangerously high temperatures.

The updated indictment said that in late June of last year, Mr. De Oliveira went to see Mr. Taveras — who is identified only as Trump Employee 4 — and told him that “‘the boss’ wanted the server deleted,” referring to the computer server holding the security footage. “What are we going to do?” the indictment quoted Mr. De Oliveira as saying, after Mr. Taveras objected and said he would not know how and did not think he had the right to do so. A statement attributed to “the Trump campaign” with no person’s name attached called the new accusations a “desperate and flailing attempt” by President Biden’s Justice Department. The original indictment against Mr. Trump was filed last month in Florida and accused him of illegally holding on to 31 individual classified documents containing national defense information. That indictment also charged with Mr. Trump and Walt Nauta, one of his personal aides, with a conspiracy to obstruct the government’s repeated attempts to reclaim the classified material.

A Wedding in 2025? Not Astrologically Ideal for Me.

Last year, Alice Bell told Jesse Zannino that he needed to propose by May 2023. “My astrology for getting married is really good in 2024 but not in 2025,” Ms. Bell explained in an interview. The beginning of their relationship was also based on astrological guidance — she timed their first date with the new moon in February 2021 — so Mr. Zannino took the suggestion in stride. After Mr. Zannino, a director of business development, met Ms. Bell’s astrologically aligned proposal deadline on April 28, she quickly mapped out potential wedding charts in order to find a date. She landed on June 8, 2024, which was ideal for both of their birth charts, she said.
