Turkey's Erdogan calls Israel 'terror state', slams West

ANKARA, Nov 15 (Reuters) - Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said on Wednesday Israel was a "terror state" committing war crimes and violating international law in Gaza, sharpening his repeated criticism of Israeli leaders and their backers in the West. Britain, the United States, European Union and some Arab states deem Hamas a terrorist group, unlike Turkey. "With the savagery of bombing the civilians it forced out of their homes while they are relocating, it is literally employing state terrorism," Erdogan said of Israel in parliament. "I am now saying, with my heart at ease, that Israel is a terror state". "The West, namely the United States, is unfortunately still seeing this issue backwards," Erdogan said.

CNBC's Jim Cramer on Tuesday gave his take on earnings as the season draws to a close, saying that sectors as a whole managed to perform fairly well. "When you look at all the groups, this was not a disappointing earnings season at all," he said. He argued that Alphabet also reported positive results, he said, adding the stock may have "roared" if management had better explained issues with the company's cloud business. He also said that companies in the utilities sector reported positive figures, but were hurt primarily because of the bond market. "Aside from Whirlpool and drug company Pfizer, I've been very impressed with pretty much every company that's reported so far," Cramer said.

Caesars paid around $15 million in ransom to regain access to its systems from the hackers, according to reporting by the Wall Street Journal. Some have been collecting evidence leading to the hackers' identities and are assisting law enforcement, according to the five insiders. The sources say that, following the September casino hacks, the FBI's investigation took on new urgency. Mandia didn't respond directly when asked whether Scattered Spider's identities were known to law enforcement. LISBON, Nov 13 (Reuters) - Bank of Portugal Governor Mario Centeno, who is under fire from the opposition over an invitation by the outgoing prime minister to replace him as premier, said on Monday he never accepted the offer but was just asked to ponder on the matter. Portuguese opposition parties on Friday argued that such an invitation compromised the political independence of a central bank governor. The Bank of Portugal's ethics committee is expected to meet on Monday to evaluate his conduct. Prime Minister Antonio Costa stepped down on Tuesday over an investigation into alleged illegalities in his government's handling of lithium and hydrogen projects and a large-scale data centre. Centeno announced his departure from the finance ministry in June 2020, during Costa's second term, and was nominated to head the bank a month later.

The swift rise in long-term US Treasury yields over the past few months caused headaches for investors by dragging many of their portfolios down. Bond yields, namely the yield on the 10-year Treasury note, dictate the interest rates on credit cards, mortgages and auto loans. Fed Chair Jerome Powell addressed that at this month’s post-meeting press conference, saying he couldn’t pinpoint exactly why yields rose so much in recent weeks. Hours before Powell’s post-meeting remarks, bond yields plunged following the Treasury Department’s quarterly refunding announcement. That’s as opposed to letting bond yields do the Fed’s work for it.

Hong Kong CNN —Business leaders in China are under immense pressure, as the country’s leader Xi Jinping intensifies a regulatory crackdown on companies and strengthens its control of the economy. They face rising risks, including the possibility of police raids and detentions of staff, in the world’s second largest economy. A former banker, he has invested in a series of Chinese companies since 2000 and brought their shares to the public markets in mainland China and Hong Kong. No end in sightThe crackdown this year has spooked the business community in China, but it is not unfamiliar. Xi launched a sweeping regulatory crackdown on the private sector in 2020, which wiped trillions of dollars off the market value of Chinese companies worldwide.

On an epic pilgrimage of his own, one writer ventures into the heart of three great religions in Bolivia, Mongolia and Iraq. Opinion | The Road Back From Hell

The nations opposing a cease-fire — Israel, the United States, some European countries and a few others — might acknowledge the perils looming. The United States would need to push for such an outcome, working alongside Qatar and regional states that have Israel’s ear. Revived Palestinian national political structures will be a critical component in advancing broader Israeli-Palestinian conflict resolution after this war. The road back from the hell of a zero-sum “us or them” begins with the humanizing of the other. Maybe it’s a road that eventually leads us back to a two-state dispensation.

Hamas officials say they do not regret the October 7 attack on Israel and would do it again. The Israeli response has killed thousands of Palestinians, but Hamas says the price is worth it. The goal was to "overthrow" the status quo, not "improve the situation in Gaza," one official said. In fact, Hamas leaders say their goal was to trigger that very response and that they're still hoping for a bigger war still. In an interview this week with the Lebanese newspaper Al-Liwaa, another Hamas leader, Osama Hamdan, reiterated that the group has no regrets for attacking Israel.

REUTERS/Catarina Demony/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsLISBON, Nov 8 (Reuters) - Portuguese anti-mining groups have urged the government to suspend and review all lithium projects while authorities investigate alleged corruption in the handling of "green" energy deals that have led to the resignation of the prime minister. Antonio Costa resigned on Tuesday, hours after prosecutors detained five people, including his chief of staff, and named two formal suspects close to him in an investigation into lithium mining and hydrogen projects. With more than 60,000 metric tons of known lithium reserves, Portugal is Europe's biggest lithium producer, but its miners sell almost exclusively to the ceramics industry. "Lithium mining projects in Portugal must be immediately cancelled to not allow territories and populations to be affected based on corrupt and unclear processes," the groups said. In 2019, Portugal's government came under fire from lawmakers for signing a contract giving exploration rights for lithium mining to Lusorecursos when the company was only three days old.

And that brings me to the second missing ingredient in the briefs supporting Rahimi: the Second Amendment itself. That is not surprising, the Cato brief notes, because when Section 922(g)(8) was enacted, there was no recognized right to individual gun ownership in the first place. to be deprived through such minimal process.”Other briefs in support of Mr. Rahimi take issue with the nature of protective orders themselves. Since the trial began in late September, Trump has been fined twice by Judge Arthur Engoron for breaking a gag order that bars him from making public comments about the judge’s staff, stormed out of the courtroom and been made to watch as two of his sons, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, testified this week. His daughter Ivanka Trump is slated to testify on Tuesday. Both sons held the title of executive vice president after their father was elected president. Eric Trump, who maintained more direct involvement in the company, provided more detailed testimony and was at times chippy in his responses to prosecutors who sought to tease out his specific role. During testimony on Friday, he acknowledged he was aware of the Trump Organization's statements of financial condition as far back as 2013 after repeatedly denying knowledge of them.
