Yen under pressure as U.S. Treasury yields push over-decade peaks

A bundle of Japanese 10,000 yen banknotes on a tray arranged at a branch of Resona Bank Ltd. in Tokyo, Japan. The yen was held at the mercy of soaring U.S. Treasury yields on Friday ahead of a closely watched rate decision by the Bank of Japan, or BOJ, while the dollar stood near a six-month peak on the prospect of higher-for-longer U.S. rates. The Japanese currency was last marginally lower at 147.6 in early Asia trade, languishing near the previous session's more than 10-month low of 148.465. The yen was also kept under pressure as a result of elevated U.S. Treasury yields, which scaled multi-year highs in the previous session as markets reeled from a hawkish pause by the Federal Reserve on Wednesday. The U.S. dollar likewise rode Treasury yields higher and against a basket of currencies, the greenback touched a more than six-month high of 105.74 in the previous session.

[1/3] Euro, Hong Kong dollar, U.S. dollar, Japanese yen, pound and Chinese 100 yuan banknotes are seen in this picture illustration, January 21, 2016. The Japanese yen strengthened against the greenback before Friday's Bank of Japan policy announcement, while the pound and the Swiss franc slipped after the British and Swiss central banks kept rates unchanged. The BOJ will end its negative interest rate policy next year, the majority of economists said in a Reuters poll, as the market has begun to envisage the demise of its ultra-easy monetary settings. The pound fell to its lowest since March after the Bank of England held interest rates steady on Thursday, following a cooler-than-expected inflation report the previous day. Meanwhile, Sweden's Riksbank and Norway's central bank both raised rates by 25 basis points, in line with expectations.

Turkey's central bank hikes interest rate to 30%

Turkey's Taksim Square, with the figure of Kemal Ataturk, the first president, and the Turkish flag in the background. Turkey's central bank hiked its key interest rate to 30% on Thursday, a 500-basis point jump from 25%, as Ankara continues to battle double-digit inflation. Traditional economic orthodoxy holds that rates must be raised to cool inflation, but Erdogan — a self-declared "enemy" of interest rates who calls the tool "the mother of all evil" — vocally espoused a strategy of lowering rates instead. After starting on its hiking path, the central bank in July stated its aim to get inflation down to 5% in the medium term — an ambitious forecast, as Turkey's annual inflation jumped to near 59% in August. Ankara now expects annual inflation to reach 65% at the end of 2023, up from a forecast of 24.9% a year ago.

ISTANBUL (AP) — Turkey’s central bank raised its key interest rate by 5 percentage points Thursday, another large but expected hike that signals a continued push toward more traditional economic policies under President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The Turkish central bank started cutting rates in late 2021 under pressure from Erdogan. Before their appointments, the central bank had cut its key interest rate from around 19% in 2021 to 8.5% earlier this year. Erdogan has fired three central bank governors who resisted pressure to cut rates before appointing Erkan’s predecessor in 2021. Following Erkan’s appointment, the bank has raised its key rate a series fo time: by an aggressive 7.5 percentage points in August, 2.5 percentage points in July and 6.5 percentage points in June.

The European Central Bank last week lifted rates to a record 4% and upgraded its inflation forecast for 2024, but the euro fell and has lost almost 2% against the dollar this month. Overall, Europe's central banks "would like to portray this idea of higher for longer (rates)," said Ed Hutchings, head of rates at Aviva Investors. The currency, which the central bank labeled "unjustifiably weak," barely caught a break and remains near a record low against the euro . He expected one the of big European central banks to be the first to cut rates. European central banks were "in a bind," Fiotakis added, as higher oil prices also threatened to push inflation higher.

Japanese 10,000 yen and U.S. 100 dollar banknotes are arranged for a photograph in Tokyo, Japan, on Sept. 7, 2017. The dollar hit fresh peaks on Thursday, sitting around its highest against the yen since November after a hawkish pause by the U.S. Federal Reserve. The Fed met market expectations at its monetary policy meeting on Wednesday, holding interest rates steady at the 5.25% to 5.50% range. The index climbed for its ninth straight week last week, its longest winning streak in nearly a decade as resilient U.S. growth fueled a rebound in the dollar. The Japanese yen was feeling the heat after the Fed meeting, hovering around 148.39 per dollar and just off a fresh low of 148.47, its weakest since November.

As they did in June, Fed policymakers at the median still see the central bank's benchmark overnight interest rate peaking this year in the 5.50%-5.75% range, just a quarter of a percentage point above the current range. But from there, the Fed's updated quarterly projections show rates falling only half a percentage point in 2024 compared with the full percentage point of cuts anticipated at the meeting in June. Interest rate sensitive two-year Treasury yields hit 17-year highs on Wednesday after the Fed decision. "It looks as though the Fed is trying to send as hawkish a signal as it possibly can," said Gennadiny Goldberg, interest rate strategist at TD Securities. The yen was down 0.13% versus the greenback at 148.05 per dollar after the Fed decision.

A Canadian dollar coin, commonly known as the "Loonie", is pictured in this illustration picture taken in Toronto January 23, 2015. The Fed held interest rates steady but projected another rate increase by the end of the year and monetary policy kept significantly tighter through 2024 than previously expected. "The U.S. dollar is climbing against its major rivals as Treasury yields push higher across the front-end of the curve, and risk-sensitive assets - from equities to the Canadian dollar - are weakening," Karl Schamotta, chief market strategist at Corpay, said in a note. The Canadian dollar was trading nearly unchanged at 1.3450 to the greenback, or 74.35 U.S. cents, after trading in a range of 1.3396 to 1.3464. The price of oil, one of Canada's major exports, settled 1% lower at $90.28 a barrel, giving back some recent gains.

Indonesia appears to be the latest country to jump on the de-dollarization bandwagon. The island nation has launched a National Task Force to promote local-currency transactions. The move is expected to help make the rupiah more stable, and support local financial markets, Bank Indonesia said. The island nation has announced it's formed a National Task Force to widen the use of local currency transactions (LCT) with partner countries, according to Indonesia's central bank. While some experts perceive de-dollarization efforts as a threat to the greenback, others have dismissed the movement as a nothingburger.

The dollar's dominance is sticky, political scientist Carla Norrlöf wrote in Project Syndicate. Two of the three core inflation measures also rose. The annual rate, the highest since the 4.4% reported in April, is double the Bank of Canada's 2% target. "Underlying inflation is still well above the level that would be consistent with achieving our target of 2% CPI inflation," she said. Money markets raised bets for a rate hike in October after the data, seeing a 42% chance of an increase after the price figures compared with 23% before. However, another inflation report and a bevy of other data are due out before the Canadian central bank next meets on Oct 25 to set the key overnight rate.

SHANGHAI/SINGAPORE, Sept 19 (Reuters) - The depreciation pressure on the Chinese yuan against the U.S. dollar is temporary, state media said on Tuesday, noting that its value against major trading partner currencies is stable. Widening yield differentials with other major economies, particularly the United States, have piled downward pressure on the Chinese currency against the dollar. "The yuan exchange rate still depends on economic fundamentals in the long run," the newspaper said in the commentary. "Financial regulators will take action when needed, resolutely correct unilateral and pro-cyclical behaviors, deal with activities that disrupts market orders, and prevent the exchange rate overshooting risks." "Based on previous FX reserve requirement ratio (RRR) reductions, the cut could ease depreciation pressure, prevent overshoot risks and boost confidence in the short term," it said.

The Bank of Japan's policy meeting on Friday is the highlight of the week in Asia, after Governor Kazuo Ueda stoked speculation of an imminent move away from ultra-loose policy. The yen was flat versus the greenback between 147.63 and 147.88 per dollar, with markets in Japan closed for a national holiday. "Anticipation of new BOJ rate guidance could support the yen into the meeting date, with the FOMC meeting also contributing to volatility this week," Chang said. The European Central Bank raised interest rates to 4% last week but said this hike could be its last. Futures are pricing in almost no chance that the Fed raises interest rates at the end of its two-day meeting next Wednesday.

Two large oil tankers unload at the 300,000-ton crude oil terminal in Yantai Port, Shandong Province, China, July 9, 2023. Oil prices inched higher on Monday, buoyed by forecasts of a widening supply deficit in the fourth quarter after Saudi Arabia and Russia extended cuts and on optimism of a demand recovery in China, the world's top crude importer. Traders will be watching decisions by central banks, including the Federal Reserve, this week on interest rate policies. "The Fed is expected to pause rate hikes this time but is likely to stay hawkish," CMC's Teng said. A pause in U.S. rate hikes could weaken the greenback which makes dollar-denominated commodities such as oil more affordable for holders of other currencies.

ORLANDO, Florida, Sept 17 (Reuters) - Hedge funds cut their net short dollar position by nearly $5 billion last week, according to the latest U.S. futures markets data, the biggest swing towards a more bullish dollar stance since May last year. Less than two months ago, funds' were net short of dollars to the tune of $21.3 billion, the biggest bet against the greenback since June 2021. Speculators' net short dollar position against just the G10 currencies, which was worth $18 billion as recently as July, has now completely evaporated. Gold prices gained on Friday as the dollar eased against the yuan after promising China economic data boosted recovery hopes in the world's top bullion consumer, although the possibility of further U.S. interest rate hikes kept investors on edge. Spot gold was up 0.3% at $1,915.09 per ounce by 0320 GMT. The yuan hit two-week highs against the dollar after data showed China factory output and retail sales in August beat forecasts in boost to recovery prospects. "The outlook for rates to be kept high for longer has been keeping non-yielding gold prices under pressure," said Yeap Jun Rong, a market strategist at IG.
