“The fact that there could have been a South Asian woman in the White House … we’re not there yet, but it would have been very nice. “There’s a great deal of disappointment in that sense,” said Shakeel Syed, executive director of the nonprofit South Asian Network. She steeped her daughters in all things South Asian, said Harris, who grew up eating South Indian food, like potato curry and masala dosa, and hearing Gopalan speak Tamil. Like many young and progressive Asian Americans, she said Israel’s war in the Gaza Strip has been an important issue for her. In the meantime, South Asian voters say they have no choice but to keep pushing.

In a Thursday interview with CNBC's Jim Cramer, DraftKings CEO Jason Robins said the online sports betting industry is at a turning point as more people across the country realize they can gamble legally. "We're at a very, you know, important inflection point in the industry," Robins said. "Most people assume that it's legal in most states now if not all. DraftKings cut its full-year guidance for 2024 when it reported Thursday after the close, sending shares down nearly 6% in extended trading. "I would expect most states over the long term will have some form of legal sports betting, and hopefully we'll get those three."

Mortgage ratesHousing affordability has been a major issue due in part to a sharp rise in mortgage rates since the pandemic. Trump has said he'll bring down mortgage rates — even though 15- and 30-year mortgage rates are fixed, and tied to Treasury yields and the economy. Mortgage rates are unlikely to fall significantly, given the current climate, explained Jacob Channel, senior economist at LendingTree. Federal student loan rates are fixed, so most borrowers won't be immediately affected. But refinancing a federal loan into a private student loan will forgo the safety nets that come with federal loans, such as deferments, forbearances, income-driven repayment and loan forgiveness and discharge options.

Voters in seven out of 10 states approved ballot measures this week to safeguard abortion rights, a hot-button issue that helped drive Americans to the polls. Trump has waffled considerably on his position on abortion, most recently saying he would not support a federal ban and wants to leave the issue up to the states. "The more restrictions we see on abortion over the next four years, the worse health outcomes are going to be. People are suffering and dying unnecessarily," said Katie O'Connor, senior director of federal abortion policy at the National Women's Law Center. At least 70% of Americans oppose a federal ban on abortion or a ban on the procedure at six weeks.

Our NFL writers addressed these topics and more in making one prediction for every team heading into the season’s second half. The fourth-year back is on pace to finish with 1,256 yards, which would be the fourth-highest total in team history. Every other NFL team has put a player in at least one of those categories during that stretch — and most teams have checked both boxes. Minnesota has one of the most productive defenses in the NFL and an offense loaded at the skill positions. And the Eagles have managed to win games despite bad luck and bad decisions.

"The vast majority of physical property, we have no idea where it is," Nathan said at Thursday's hearing. Nathan alleged that Giuliani has opened secret bank accounts and created limited liability companies on the heels of the defamation verdict last year. "Most of my expenses go towards food, but if I do spend money, it's typically towards gifts for family or my girlfriend." Rosenfeld said about two-thirds of Steve Madden's business are U.S. imports. Of that, he said, "we currently source a little bit more than 70% of those goods from China." That means slightly less than half of its business would be at risk of tariffs on Chinese imports, he said. For many Democratic voters, Vice President Kamala Harris' loss to Donald Trump was disappointing but not surprising, they said in interviews, agreeing that their party hadn't done enough to talk about the economy and lamenting lingering racism and sexism. Voters in Dearborn, America's only Arab-majority city, broke decisively for Trump over Harris, a departure from Joe Biden’s beating Trump there in 2020. "I was really praying that she would get it," said Deborah McKinnon, 68, a Black Democratic voter from Pittsburgh. "It just underscores that Black women are the most loyal Democrats, and they were the power behind Kamala Harris' campaign," Allison said. John Park, 37, a Black Democratic voter in suburban Atlanta, said that as a warehouse worker for an automotive company, he initially liked Trump's "pro-America" approach.

Being elected president will likely result in the federal criminal cases against him being dismissed, while his state criminal cases could at the least be frozen until after he leaves office. Trump’s legal team, meanwhile, is evaluating its next steps for how to get all four criminal cases resolved, and plan to argue soon that all of the cases “must stop immediately,” according to a source directly involved in the discussions. Here's a look at where the various legal cases against Trump stand — and how they could be affected by his victory. They argue that some of the evidence presented to the grand jury and at the criminal trial should not have been allowed in the wake of the high court's ruling. Trump's victory likely won't impact his pending appeals of the civil judgments against him that total more than $550 million.
