Every effort the president and his White House and campaign teams make to fix the problem end up exacerbating it. She said that while Biden had a cold at the debate, he hadn’t taken medication but was now feeling better. But she declined to go beyond Biden’s already released annual physical results that found him fit for duty in February. Democratic Sen. Peter Welch from Vermont said Tuesday: “The big question going into that debate was the age question. One of those governors, Kentucky’s Andy Beshear, said in a remarkably candid interview with CNN on Tuesday that Biden’s debate was “rough” and that whatever the polls say, it will damage his campaign.

On Tuesday, Mr. Biden suffered his first formal call to resign from the race from a Democratic member of Congress. Paramount and Skydance Near Merger Deal

For months, Paramount’s controlling shareholder and Skydance sought to seal a merger that would transform the media industry, before those talks ground to a sudden halt in June. Now, just weeks later, the two sides have reached a preliminary deal to merge, four people familiar with the negotiations said. If they win that approval, the deal will combine Paramount — the parent company of CBS, MTV and Nickelodeon — and Skydance, the up-and-coming movie studio that helped produce “Top Gun: Maverick,” into a new giant in Hollywood. Shari Redstone, who controls Paramount through her stake in its parent company, National Amusements, is part of the family that has run the media conglomerate for decades. The new company would be backed instead by big-ticket investors like the private-equity firm RedBird and David Ellison, son of the Oracle founder Larry Ellison.

Washington CNN —The White House on Tuesday fended off tough questions about President Joe Biden’s mental fitness, acknowledging his poor performance in last week’s debate while maintaining the president is still able to hold and run for office. The president did not have a great night,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said. Campaign officials are scrambling to calm donors who were shocked by Biden’s halting, hoarse performance. The White House announced Tuesday that Biden is expected to meet with Democratic governors and congressional leaders Wednesday after some demanded a meeting with the president. Jean-Pierre also addressed recent reporting that Hunter Biden had been joining his father in recent White House meetings.

A CBS/YouGov poll found that 46% of registered Democrats think Biden should step aside. Yet Biden dropping out of the race at this stage is also a huge gamble, one that's fairly unprecedented in recent memory. AdvertisementHere are the most common arguments that people are making for and against Biden dropping out of the race — some of which, inevitably, may contradict each other. Why Biden should drop out of the raceThe debate was his last good shot at turning things around, and he failed. It's early, but polling so far has not shown a dramatic shift in the race since the debate.

What Will Biden Donors Do Now?

Donors still on edgeThe shock waves from last week’s presidential debate are still reverberating, as President Biden and his aides sought to allay concerns from despondent Democrats and wealthy donors about his age and fitness for office. Donors are increasingly becoming reconciled to Biden remaining the Democratic nominee even after Biden’s disastrous performance. But some in the party, and in the markets, are increasingly expecting Donald Trump to win in November. Seventy-two percent of registered voters don’t believe Biden has the mental and cognitive health to serve as president, according to a CBS News poll published Sunday, compared with 65 percent in early June. With the odds for a Trump win rising after the debate, Wall Street analysts are recalculating what that could mean for the economy and the markets.

Democratic Party grandees, meanwhile, crowded onto Sunday talk shows to try to turn attention away from Biden’s confused and painful debate showing and to put the spotlight back on Trump. But any set of bad polls showing an already-tough reelection bid was seriously damaged by the debate could trigger panic again. The ferocious counterattack by Biden’s campaign, however, is not answering fundamental questions posed in the aftermath of a debate that shattered confidence in Biden’s capacity to beat Trump for many of his fellow Democrats. Voters saw Biden’s reduced and poignant state with their own eyes. Biden campaign manager Jennifer O’Malley Dillon even blamed any poor forthcoming polls on the media and not the president.

Jurors in Los Angeles agreed with the plaintiffs that the NFL conspired with member teams to artificially inflate the price of “Sunday Ticket” for millions of residential and commercial subscribers. The jury awarded $4.6 billion to a residential class, and $96 million to commercial subscribers such as bars and restaurants, according to an attorney for the plaintiffs. A judge could award triple damages under US antitrust law, bringing the total judgment to more than $14 billion. The plaintiffs are DirecTV subscribers who bought “NFL Sunday Ticket” between June 2011 and February 2023. The case includes at least 2.4 million residential customers and 48,000 commercial subscribers like bars and restaurants, according to court records.

The price increase takes effect on Aug. 20 for new customers for both plans. Existing Paramount+ with Showtime customers will see the price increase hit on or after Sept. 20. Paramount executives had said publicly on multiple occasions they see a lot of opportunities to increase the price of streaming services. Paramount said in April it had added 3.7 million Paramount+ subscribers during the first quarter, bringing the total to 71 million. The price increase comes after National Amusements earlier this month stopped discussions with Skydance on a proposed merger with Paramount.
