Charles Barber’s “In the Blood” treats a consequential topic, and contains moments of real insight, drama and humor. Trouble is, Barber opens with several omissions and slights that left me on edge for the balance of the book. Barber begins his story about catastrophic bleeding and the urgent search for a cure, appropriately enough, in the savage battle for Mogadishu in 1993. More glaringly, the Army Rangers described on the raid actually played a supporting role to commandos from Delta Force, which Barber never mentions. Yet I wanted to trust this book, because it tells an important story in vivid, engrossing terms.

Brazil, the world's biggest juice exporter, will export 1.7% less orange juice to the US compared to last year. Orange juice has never been this expensive, with Bloomberg data showing futures hitting a record high Monday due to rising concerns about global supply from citrus greening, a crop disease, in Florida and Brazil. Orange juice futures climbed 1.8% to $3.052 per pound around midday in New York. Brazil, the world's largest juice exporter, is set to ship 1.7% less orange juice to the US this year, according to a July 20 report from the Department of Agriculture. Disease concerns there as well as in Florida, the US' biggest orange hub, have put a damper on produce expectations.

But researchers have found that women in foraging societies were often the ones bringing home the bacon (and other prey, too). Of the 63 foraging communities examined, 50 had records documenting women hunting. Women hunted game of all sizes, “with large game pursued the most,” the study authors reported. Women also used specialized tools: In the Philippines, for example, Agta women hunted with knives, bows and arrows, or a combination of the two weapons, depending on personal preference. CNN —An independent report into the culture of cricket in England and Wales has found racism, class-based discrimination, elitism and sexism to be “widespread” and “deep rooted” in the sport. The “Holding a Mirror Up to Cricket” report was written by the Independent Commission for Equity in Cricket (ICEC) and received more than 4,400 responses to its call for evidence between oral and written submissions. … The decline in Black cricket in England and Wales has been well documented and subject to much public debate for many years.
