Many people feel “that they’re not getting enough back, that a college education isn’t worth enough,” said Paul Peterson, a professor of education policy and governance at Harvard University. The data says that college education is worth more than ever.”The dissonance shows how higher education has become another slice of the economy where the vibes are worse than the numbers might suggest — and risks exacerbating Democratic losses with working-class voters. Andrew Smith, director, University of New Hampshire Survey CenterThere are many reasons why improving college affordability may not register widely. Given other budget pressures — from child care to car insurance — college expenses simply might not have fallen enough to matter. In 1910, Puccini was in New York to supervise the opening night of his opera “La Fanciulla del West,” the Met’s very first world premiere. With the tenor Enrico Caruso and the soprano Emmy Destinn, household names in their day, in the leading roles, “Fanciulla” was a runaway hit. Now, more than 100 years later, with a severe lack of music education in our schools and competition from an ever-expanding array of streaming entertainment options, opera faces its greatest existential challenge. We are fighting to survive economically (our European colleagues are better off with substantial government funding), regain our artistic footing and secure new audiences and donors. This is particularly difficult to accomplish because for decades there has been resistance to substantial artistic change from administrators, academics and critics.

New York CNN —Top pollster J. Ann Selzer will retire from the Des Moines Register’s famed Iowa Poll and the survey will “evolve” after it failed to accurately capture former President Donald Trump’s strong support in the 2024 election, resulting in a 16-point miss. Trump ultimately swept to victory over Harris in the state by a 13-point margin, winning the actual vote 56-43%. Prior to the 2024 survey, the Iowa Poll under her stewardship had been considered by many to be the methodological gold standard. As of June 2024, election forecaster Nate Silver gave Selzer an A+ rating. In an op-ed for the Register, Selzer said that her decision to part ways with the poll predated the erroneous results.

Economists say Trump's proposals are a mixed bag; some could help housing costs and some could hurt. Ultimately, housing policy experts and industry leaders say housing costs will largely depend on how much new supply can be delivered to the market, which is suffering from a severe shortage of homes. The yellow banana fixed to the white wall with silver duct tape is a work entitled "Comedian," by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan. Now, the conceptual artwork has an estimated value of between $1 million and $1.5 million at Sotheby's auction on Nov. 20.
