The S&P 500 now trades at 19 times its expected 12-months earnings, well above its historic average of 15.6 times, Refinitiv Datastream showed. WFII recently downgraded the technology sector, which has led this year's S&P 500 rally, to "neutral" from "favorable," citing "unattractive" valuations. Goldman urged investors to consider "downside protection" to their stock portfolios, though they expect the S&P 500 to reach 4,500 by year-end, or about 3.5% above current levels. Valuations are even more stretched for the Nasdaq 100 (.NDX), whose 36% rally this year has dwarfed that of the S&P 500. "From a near-term perspective, investors should expect stocks to just cool a little bit."

Interest rates have broken the global wealth pump
  + stars: | 2023-06-23 | by ( Edward Chancellor | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +7 min
Rising inflation and higher interest rates would appear to make matters even worse. In the United States, immigration and the offshoring of manufacturing has undercut the power of labour. Ultra-low interest rates proved the greatest wealth pump ever devised, loading the dice in favour of the financial elite. Since the turn of the century, when the Federal Reserve under Alan Greenspan reduced interest rates to a new post-war low, wealth has consistently grown faster than GDP. That’s where higher interest rates come in.

Restoring confidence is looking increasingly like a long-term project and investors are positioning for a longer game and a slower rebound. The central bank said inflation will come under further pressure. Erdogan said last week he approved the steps Simsek would take with the central bank, suggesting he had given the green light to rate hikes. The central bank's key rate remains below deposit rates that reach up to 40% and real rates are still deeply negative. The central bank's net reserves fell to a record low of negative $5.7 billion last month. Authorities hope foreign investors and hard currency will return after a years-long exodus, potentially reducing the central bank's need to intervene to keep the lira stable.

Shares of global bank Barclays are forecast to more than double over the next 12 months, according to Jefferies. The British bank's stock has underperformed and is valued below its peers over the past few months. The disparity has led to the bank reportedly hiring consulting firm BCG to undertake a strategic review to address weaknesses in the share price. The bank's analysts predict that Barclays can potentially buy back £2.2 billion worth of shares in 2024 and 2025, along with £1.5 billion this year. As the bank's earnings increase, its share price could also rise, providing a better return for shareholders.

JPMorgan cuts around 20 Asia investment banking jobs

HONG KONG, June 21 (Reuters) - JPMorgan Chase & Co (JPM.N) has in a new round of downsizing cut around 20 investment banking jobs in Asia, a source with direct knowledge of the matter said, joining global peers in trimming headcount as dealmaking slows. The cuts are the second round of layoffs at JPMorgan in Asia this year with the Wall Street bank cutting around 20 investment banking jobs, mostly mid-level bankers focused on China deals, in the first quarter. JPMorgan is the latest among a string of global banks to trim investment banking teams in Asia. The decline was roughly in line with the rest of the world, as higher interest rates, volatile markets and geopolitical tensions weighed on dealmaking globally, causing a number of Wall Street banks to cut jobs over the past year. China cuts loan prime rate as economic recovery fizzles out
  + stars: | 2023-06-20 | by ( Laura He | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
The rate cuts come as Wall Street banks, including Goldman Sachs, slash their forecasts for China’s economy. The People’s Bank of China on Tuesday trimmed its one-year loan prime rate (LPR) by 10 basis points from 3.65% to 3.55%, and reduced the five-year rate by the same margin to 4.2%. This is the first time the PBOC has cut both LPR rates since August 2022, when renewed Covid lockdowns and a deepening property downturn were pummeling the economy. “The 10 bps rate cut[s] are unlikely to stimulate business confidence and housing demand,” said Ken Cheung, chief Asian foreign exchange strategist at Mizuho Bank. Hong Kong and mainland Chinese stocks slid after Tuesday’s rate cuts.
