Israel's invasion of Gaza could turn the war into a regional conflict, experts said. AdvertisementAdvertisementIsrael's invasion of Gaza could escalate the war into a full-blown regional conflict, military analysts said. AdvertisementAdvertisementOn Sunday, Israel declared a state of war and a day later announced a "complete siege" of Gaza . Buckner pointed to signs of escalations across Israel's borders that could tilt a possible Israeli-Hamas war into a regional conflict. Israel's incursion into Gaza could create a "domino effect" that triggers all its neighbors in the region to join the conflict, Buckner said.

Cheap, second-hand, and purloined weapons comprised Hamas’ deadly makeshift arsenal that fueled a devastating, multi-pronged attack on Israel over the weekend. CNN analyzed dozens of photos and videos of Hamas militants during the surprise assault to identify the weapons used to kill at least 1,200 people in Israel. In previous battles with Israel, Hamas was known to have fired rockets made of old water pipes, the researcher noted. BulldozersPhoto-illustration: CNN/Mohammed Fayq Abu Mostafa/ReutersSeveral experts who spoke to CNN emphasized the ad hoc nature of the Hamas attack. In some videos, Hamas militants can be seen driving Israel Defense Forces (IDF) vehicles and using Israeli weapons that were likely taken during the initial fighting.

The lawsuits against the US Navy and West Point suggest that opponents of affirmative action are serious about eliminating any policy of diversity based on race. Israeli forces continue to mobilize ahead of what appears to be preparations for a ground invasion of Gaza. The IDF said it ultimately wants to strip Hamas of its military and governing capabilities there. War experts say rooting out Hamas will still be a tough fight, given the urban environment. Ultimately, it remains unclear when Israeli forces might actually advance, but it is clear preparations are underway. "So you can believe that they've stockpiled a lot of weapons — not just rockets for attacking into Israel, but for attacking a possible ground invasion."

Tanks have big guns, but medium-caliber cannons on other armored vehicles can be just as deadly. AdvertisementAdvertisementWhile tanks and their big guns have been getting the lion's share of attention in Ukraine, another weapon is proving equally deadly. Medium-caliber cannon — the 20-mm to 40-mm cannon found on infantry fighting vehicles, air-defense vehicles, and other platforms around the world — have been wreaking damage against infantry and other targets. Personnel load the gun of a BMP-2 amphibious infantry fighting vehicle during an arms exhibition Russia in September 2013. The effectiveness of medium-caliber cannons suggest that as armored vehicles evolve, those guns will remain part of their armament.

REUTERS/Joshua Roberts/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsWASHINGTON, Oct 9 (Reuters) - The U.S. Army on Monday said it would need Congress to approve additional funding to ensure the Pentagon's munitions production and acquisition plans can simultaneously meet the needs of both Israel and Ukraine. Army Secretary Christine Wormuth made the comments as the U.S. House of Representatives is effectively paralyzed as Republicans work to select a new speaker. Israel, America's closest ally in the Middle East, has declared war after an unprecedented, surprise attack on Saturday by Hamas fighters left hundreds dead. "We need additional support from Congress. "But I would argue, that just as we lean forward with Ukraine, I think the intent is to lean forward in support of Israel," she said.

Israel has to punch into the dense Gaza strip with tanks and troops, and conduct searches, he said. The rescue effort would be a "bloody mess" and "catastrophic" to Palestinian civilians, he warned. Israeli forces would have to seize control of the ground level in Gaza and conduct house-to-house searches, he said. CNN —A former US Army sergeant who allegedly lived in China for several years was arrested Friday on charges of keeping national defense information and attempting to share it with the Chinese government. If convicted, the two charges Schmidt faces – attempting to deliver national defense information and retention of national defense information – each carry up to 10 years in prison. While in China, Schmidt allegedly created other documents detailing US Army intelligence practices over training, intelligence collection, interrogations methods as well as a hand-drawn diagram of an Army computer network. The former Army sergeant allegedly contacted Chinese companies run by the government there to advertise his services and access to sensitive material. The arrest comes after several members of the US armed forces have been charged this year with retaining or sharing military information with others, including China.
