Scott Bessent, founder and chief executive officer of Key Square Group LP, during an interview in Washington, D.C., June 7, 2024. The U.S. stock market appeared to cheer President-elect Donald Trump's presumptive nominee for Treasury secretary, who told CNBC earlier in November that he sees an era of strong growth and lower inflation ahead. Stock market futures rose and Treasury yields tumbled early Monday following the announcement late Friday that Trump would pick Scott Bessent, a familiar Wall Street figure, to take on his administration's most important economic role. The move sent a message that Trump wants someone with strong market credentials as well as a similar philosophy for the role. In particular, bond yields have scaled higher, with some interpreting the move as anticipating another leg up for inflation while others see it as traders pricing in stronger growth.

Last January, Shandy Brewer boarded an Alaska Airlines flight from Portland, Ore., to Ontario, Calif., en route to her grandmother’s birthday celebration. Spanish retailer Mango is embarking on a bold expansion plan in the U.S. as it looks to shed its fast-fashion image and position itself as a premium brand. "We have also the opportunity to have bigger stores in the U.S.," he noted, adding Mango will open some multiline stores that feature men's and kids' items. Mango's sales grew more than 10% in the U.S. this year and the company expects to see double-digit growth again next year. The goal is part of a larger strategic plan at Mango focused on growing sales from about 3.1 billion euros annually to 4 billion euros by 2026. We also have 500 people taking care of the product from end to end," said Ruiz.

What’s Going on With All of These Food Recalls?
  + stars: | 2024-11-25 | by ( Emily Schmall | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
There has been a barrage of bad news about food lately. Ten people died after eating Boar’s Head deli meat in a listeria outbreak that hospitalized dozens of others. This month, there has been a food recall nearly every day. But a closer examination of data on foodborne illnesses and food recalls shows a more complicated picture. “I won’t say the food supply is getting less safe, but it’s not getting safer either,” said Donald Schaffner, a professor of food science at Rutgers University.

New York CNN —Iced coffee just isn’t the same when you make it at home. This year, Keurig Dr Pepper launched a machine that is dedicated to iced coffee, advertising a drink “as cold as the coffee shops” in three minutes or less for $199. But there’s science behind why iced coffee is so much better at coffee shops, and current single-serve espresso machine innovations don’t meet that quality despite their marketing. And iced coffee mania comes at a time when coffee production is at risk of surging prices as factors like climate change could slash the global supply. Almost a quarter of Americans enjoy their coffee cold, according to this fall’s National Coffee Data Trends report.

New York CNN —Business leaders say they are relieved President-elect Donald Trump made a safe choice to lead the Department of Treasury after more unconventional selections to other cabinet posts. Hedge fund executive Scott Bessent survived an internal squabble over the role of Treasury secretary, a key position that will face almost immediate deadlines and pressures. “Bessent is reasonable and pragmatic.”JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, one of the most powerful executives on Wall Street, is a fan, too. And for this key position, Trump opted to go with a pick that is not expected to draw a contentious confirmation battle. Trump instead picked Lutnick for Commerce secretary, another key role, though not as prominent as Treasury.

A man walks past the People's Bank of China (PBOC) building on July 20, 2023 in Beijing, China. The People's Bank of China kept the medium-term lending facility rate unchanged at 2.0% on 900 billion yuan ($124.26 billion) worth of one-year loans to some financial institutions, according to the bank's official statement. Keeping the MLF rate intact allows for "greater policy maneuverability" given the change in U.S. administration, at a time when commercial banks' net-interest-margins have remained tight, Pang added. "A delayed reduction in the [MLF] lending rates" would also bolster the yuan against the stronger greenback, JLL's Pang added. Unlike the Fed's focus on a main interest rate, the PBOC uses a variety of rates to manage monetary policy.

Never before, lobbyists say, has the geographic center of power shifted so dramatically with the arrival of a new administration. By leveraging his access to Trump, Ballard Partners was able to compete with the old white-shoe lobbying firms that have been the industry's dominant players for decades. Corporate clients need lobbyists who appreciate that Trump is "disrupting the status quo in Washington," Sayfie, the Ballard lobbyist, says. Some major companies, lobbyists say, have been caught off guard by the rapid pace of Trump's transition moves. Those who bankroll his staff and travel before he takes office, lobbyists say, stand to build connections and curry favor with the once and future commander in chief.

CNN —Vaping has an immediate effect on how well the user’s blood vessels work, even if the e-cigarette doesn’t contain nicotine, according to new research. But scientists say these results may mean that vaping regularly could lead to vascular disease down the road. “Even if there was no nicotine in the e-cigarette, there could be other components that may be harmful,” Nabbout said. Compared with the nonsmokers and cigarette smokers, the people who used vapes with nicotine had the most significant reduction in vascular function. If vaping is significantly affecting someone’s vascular health, e-cigarette users could then see increased heart attacks, strokes or blood flow issues, Rizzo said.
