Five secretaries of state on Monday urged Elon Musk to fix his social media platform X’s artificial intelligence search assistant after it allegedly shared false information about the 2024 presidential election. “In all nine states the opposite is true,” said the letter, which was first reported by The Washington Post. In Monday’s letter, the secretaries of state wrote that Grok’s false claim was “shared on multiple social media platforms” within hours of Biden’s announcement. But “the false information about ballot deadlines has been captured and shared repeatedly in multiple posts — reaching millions of people,” the officials wrote. “Furthermore, Grok continued to repeat this false information for more than a week until it was corrected on July 31, 2024,” the letter alleged.

Read previewChinese scientists claim that it's possible to destroy satellites — including SpaceX's Starlink system — using lasers mounted on submarines. Chinese researchers envision the solution as flotillas of mass-produced laser subs that could be dispatched to oceans around the world. They would wait for tracking data from other non-submarine platforms to determine when a target satellite is overhead. In addition to destroying satellites, these subs could also blast aircraft or land targets such as radars and oil refineries. Laser subs could also shield China's ballistic missile submarines from detection.

NASA this week has been discussing the possibility of returning Starliner empty and instead using SpaceX’s Crew Dragon spacecraft to return its astronauts. The Boeing crew flight was initially planned to last a minimum of nine days. NASA previously noted that SpaceX serves as a backup but has sought to deemphasize that possibility, calling Boeing’s spacecraft the “primary option” for return. Already, Boeing’s Starliner losses total more than $1.5 billion due to repeated setbacks and years of delays in developing the spacecraft. If NASA backs Boeing and returns Wilmore and Williams on Starliner, the agency is accepting a currently unquantifiable amount of risk.

Lemon had "incurred hundreds of thousands of dollars in expenses" in preparing for the show, the lawsuit alleges. Former CNN anchor Don Lemon sued Elon Musk on Thursday, accusing him of making false promises to entice the journalist into a canceled deal to host a show on the billionaire's social media platform. Lemon accuses Musk and X of fraud, negligent misrepresentation, misappropriation of name and likeness, breach of contract, and unjust enrichment. "You're set up for a lot of $$ this year," Weitz allegedly told Lemon in a Dec. 30, 2023, text. "To this day, Defendants have not compensated Lemon pursuant to the exclusive partnership deal that Defendants induced Lemon to enter into," the lawsuit says.

Over the last four days, Elon Musk has spoken out more than 50 times about President Nicolás Maduro of Venezuela — and the comments have been far from flattering. “Shame on Dictator Maduro,” Mr. Musk wrote on X on Sunday, as results came in from Venezuela’s presidential election, which has been criticized as deeply flawed. Mr. Musk, the 53-year-old chief executive of Tesla and SpaceX, has often criticized heads of state, including President Biden, on X. But the attacks against Mr. Maduro, who is one of the prominent symbols of the left in Latin America, stood out for their sudden volume and aggression. They were part of a pattern by Mr. Musk of denouncing leftist ideals and socialism.

Less than an hour after a gunman in Butler, Pa., tried to assassinate Donald J. Trump this month, David Sacks, a venture capitalist based in San Francisco, directed his anger about the incident toward a former colleague. “The Left normalized this,” Mr. Sacks wrote on X, linking to a post about Reid Hoffman, a technology investor and major Democratic donor. Mr. Sacks implied that Mr. Hoffman, a critic of Mr. Trump who had funded a lawsuit accusing the former president of rape and defamation, had helped cause the shooting. Elon Musk, who leads SpaceX and Tesla and previously worked with Mr. Sacks and Mr. Hoffman, then weighed in on X, name-checking Mr. Hoffman and saying people like him “got their dearest wish.”In Silicon Valley, the spectacle of tech billionaire attacking tech billionaire has suddenly exploded, as pro-Trump executives and their Democratic counterparts have openly turned on each other. Editor’s note: A version of this story appeared in CNN’s Wonder Theory science newsletter. Thousands of years ago, our ancestors produced the first maps of the stars and practiced alchemy, the precursor to chemistry. But ancient alchemists actually developed technology and discovered chemical elements that are still widely used today. Now, a new discovery links both astronomy and alchemy in one intriguing figure who lived during the Renaissance. Once the Starliner mission concludes, SpaceX will ferry a quartet of astronauts for NASA’s Crew-9 mission to the space station.

The Federal Aviation Administration has approved SpaceX to resume flights of its mainstay Falcon 9 rocket after a brief grounding, with Elon Musk's company planning to launch its next mission carrying satellites as soon as Saturday. The FAA clearance came just 15 days after the rocket suffered a rare inflight failure while in orbit during a launch of Starlink satellites. During the July 11 launch, the rocket's lower first stage, or booster — powered by nine engines — operated as expected before returning to land. A loose clamp for that tube and the intense vibration of the rocket's engine led to cracking, the company said. That cracked sense line resulted in a leak of liquid oxygen, causing damage to the rocket's engine when it attempted to restart in space.

But the officials portrayed the orbital traffic jam as a good thing. “It complicates our lives, but in a really good way.”Operations at the space station have been more eventful than usual lately. A new Boeing spacecraft experienced propulsion problems en route to the space station. The astronauts on the station had to shelter for a while after a defunct Russian satellite disintegrated. And the question of when SpaceX could next fly more astronauts emerged after a rocket’s failure in orbit.

CNN —SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket — the most prolific launch vehicle in the world — is ready to return to flight after suffering a mission-ending failure during a routine journey earlier this month. On its website, SpaceX has already revealed that it will put the Falcon 9 back to work as soon as Saturday, launching a batch of Starlink internet satellites. If successful, the launch could put SpaceX back on track to returning to its routine but crucial work launching astronauts to the International Space Station. What happened to Falcon 9The Falcon 9, which is the smallest vehicle among SpaceX’s fleet of rockets, is the linchpin of the US rocket industry. A Falcon 9 had launched a group of Starlink satellites out of California on July 11 shortly before the mishap occurred.

But with Trump as president, Musk wouldn't even need to dismantle the so-called "administrative state" to get federal agencies out of his way. Boeing's crew spacecraft Starliner will stay docked with the International Space Station into August, NASA confirmed on Thursday, as the mission remains on hold while the company and agency study problems that arose early in the flight. Starliner capsule "Calypso," which carried NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams to the ISS, has now been in space 50 days and counting. NASA needs to conduct a review that won't happen until the first week of August, Stich said, and only after that review will the agency schedule Starliner's return. Currently, the organizations are analyzing the thruster that was tested in White Sands and this weekend expect to have the Starliner capsule conduct test firings while docked with the ISS. Stich acknowledged again that NASA has contingency plans in case the agency determines that Starliner should return without Wilmore and Williams — alternatives that include using SpaceX's Dragon capsule to bring back NASA's astronauts.

Vivian Jenna Wilson, the transgender daughter of Elon Musk, said Thursday in her first public interview that he was an absent father who was cruel to her as a child for being queer and feminine. Wilson, 20, in an exclusive interview with NBC News, responded to comments that Musk made Monday about her and her transgender identity. She told NBC News that at the time, she was surprised by the media attention to the court filing, which she submitted when she was 18. Wilson told NBC News that those anecdotes are not true, though she said she did act stereotypically feminine in other ways as a child. Musk told Peterson that Wilson's gender transition has been the motivation for his push into conservative politics.
