WASHINGTON — A U.S. federal judge on Friday denied former President Donald Trump's fourth attempt to delay the trial date in a defamation case against him brought by the writer E. Jean Carroll. U.S. District Court Judge Lewis Kaplan, in a 17-page order, said Trump's request to stay the case while he appealed a previous ruling from the same court failed to meet any of the criteria under which a delay would typically be granted. The trial is currently set to begin on Monday, Jan. 15, the same day as the first-in-the-nation nominating contest in Iowa. If the current timeline holds through January, then the trial in federal district court in the Southern District of New York will most likely begin the following day, Jan. 16. As the defamation case wound its way through the legal system, Carroll sued Trump again in 2022 under a different statute, accusing him of both sexual abuse and defamation.

"Mr. Trump has not provided a single reason for the court to find that there is any likelihood that he will succeed on appeal," Kaplan wrote. China Evergrande, a behemoth property developer, filed for bankruptcy protection on Thursday more than two years after it defaulted on its debt. The company’s meltdown in 2021 was followed by the defaults of smaller developers and signaled the start of a slow decay of China’s real estate sector that now threatens to inflict damage on the country’s broader economy. Evergrande’s bankruptcy petition, filed in the United States bankruptcy court in the Southern District of New York, comes as the company continues to try to settle staggering levels of debt. As of the end of last year, Evergrande, which along with its affiliated companies has assets in the United States, reported liabilities totaling $335 billion. That Evergrande is still negotiating with its creditors is a sign of the deep structural problems and slow-moving crash facing China’s real estate market.

A Florida federal judge on Thursday said she would hold a hearing sealed from the public to discuss prosecutors' request for an order to protect classified material at the heart of a criminal case against former President Donald Trump. The hearing "will take place at a designated time and place to discuss sensitive, security-related issues concerning classified discovery," Judge Aileen Cannon said in a written order. Cannon did not say in the order where and when that hearing will occur. But she said that Trump and his co-defendants in the case, Walt Nauta and Carlos De Oliveira, did not have to attend the hearing. Trump is charged in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida with crimes related to retaining classified government records after leaving the White House and trying to cover up the fact that he was keeping those documents in boxes at his Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach.

Legal experts told Insider that some of them might flip on Trump and cooperate with the prosecution. "It's not surprising to see unindicted co-conspirators," Anna Cominsky, an associate professor of law and the director of the Criminal Defense Clinic at New York Law School, told Insider. She said that some unindicted co-conspirators will never be charged "for whatever reason, perhaps there they're not known. "The other reason why those individuals may not be charged is because they're cooperating," Cominsky said. "There are all kinds of reasons to do that," Tobias told Insider.

The fraud ground to a halt, prosecutors alleged, after Brackett was unable to attract further investors and simply ran out of funds. It shopped documents claiming $3.7 million in annual revenue around to investors and various short-term lenders, prosecutors allege. Brackett allegedly "transferred Firm-1's funds out of the account," and the company soon collapsed. Centricity's tale echoes the fraud allegedly perpetrated by Charlie Javice, the troubled startup founder of the fintech Frank. Similar to the allegations against Brackett, Javice allegedly manipulated her metrics to convince JPMorgan to acquire her startup.

REUTERS/Maja Smiejkowska/File PhotoNEW YORK, Aug 8 (Reuters) - A federal judge in Manhattan said the British pop star Dua Lipa must face a lawsuit accusing her of copying her 2021 megahit "Levitating" from a 1979 disco song. The lawsuit, filed in March 2022, claimed that "Levitating" shared "compositional elements" with "Wiggle," most significantly by duplicating its opening melody. Defense lawyers argued that it was implausible to believe that Lipa, 27, heard "Wiggle" before writing "Levitating." Campaign finance charges against Sam Bankman-Fried are still on the table and will be included in an indictment next week against the founder of failed crypto exchange FTX, prosecutors said in a letter to a Manhattan federal judge Tuesday. Bankman-Fried faces decades in prison if convicted on the original seven-count indictment, which centers around an alleged multibillion-dollar fraud against FTX investors. However, the government had been forced to drop additional allegations of campaign finance fraud in July because of the terms of the U.S. extradition treaty with the Bahamas, where Bankman-Fried and his company were based. The treaty with Bahamas prevents prosecutors from adding further charges against someone who has been extradited without first getting permission from the other government. The U.S. government had asked the Bahamas to extradite Bankman-Fried on a seven-count indictment, but prosecutors didn't get clearance from the Bahamas to add further charges of campaign finance and bribery to Bankman-Fried's indictment.

Lawyers for former President Donald Trump told a judge they want a hearing for a protective order sought by prosecutors in his criminal election case delayed until next week, despite the judge asking both sides to offer her dates on or before Friday. Prosecutors from the office of special counsel Jack Smith, in turn, told U.S. District Judge Tayna Chutkan they are available for the hearing on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday. The protective order sought by Smith would bar Trump from publicly revealing some evidence collected during the criminal investigation.
