CNN —On the eve of his Hall of Fame induction, NBA legend Dirk Nowitzki has said that his daughter is “mostly embarrassed” about any “hoopla” surrounding her dad. Alongside the German, two-time NBA champion Pau Gasol, four-time NBA champion Tony Parker, San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich, Dwyane Wade and the 1976 U.S. Olympic Women’s basketball team, among others, will be inducted. However, at a press conference on Tuesday, Nowitzki admitted that his impending inauguration has not yet fully resonated with his children. Nowitzki scored 35,223 points across 21 seasons in Dallas, playing 1,667 games for the only NBA team he ever featured for – only John Stockton played more games for one team across his career. His crowning moment arguably came in 2011 when he led the Mavs to the NBA title, the organization’s first and only championship in its history.

CNN —The teenage cousin of the gunman responsible for the 2022 Uvalde, Texas, school shooting was arrested Monday on suspicion of threatening to “do the same thing” to a school, according to court documents obtained by CNN. Cruz is the cousin of Salvador Ramos, the 18-year-old who fatally shot 19 children and two teachers at Robb Elementary School in May 2022, San Antonio police Sgt. Cruz’s mother contacted police on Monday after her daughter reported that Cruz said he planned to “do the same thing” as his cousin, according to an affidavit obtained by CNN. His mother told investigators she was “especially concerned because the suspect is currently on probation, was intoxicated at the time” and because the family lives across the street from an elementary school, the affidavit states. Cruz’s sister told investigators that while she was giving her brother a ride, he “threatened to shoot her in the head and stated he would ‘shoot the school,’” according to the affidavit.

CNN —Extreme heat is far deadlier than other natural disasters, killing on average more than twice as many people each year as hurricanes and tornadoes combined, according to data tracked by the National Weather Service. Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego recently told Biden the city’s extreme heat is a “long-term emergency.” But it can’t get FEMA federal assistance unless Congress amends the Stafford Act – something some Western lawmakers are pushing for. “Just because we don’t necessarily have the authorities right now in the Stafford Act, that doesn’t mean we’re sitting idly by,” Criswell said. “Right now, FEMA doesn’t treat extreme heat in the same way as it does other disasters because it can’t,” Juanita Constible, senior climate and health advocate for the Natural Resources Defense Council, told CNN. “Adding it to that official list from Congress would clarify FEMA’s role in addressing heat,” Keith said.

A recent report by the Bank of America Institute compared population with housing supply. San Antonio, Dallas, Orlando, and Houston have high population growth and low housing supply. Anna Zhou, an economist at the Bank of America Institute, said in a recent report that housing supply is unusually constrained right now, as measured by months' supply. Finally, cities in the upper-left quadrant identified in red have high housing supply but a declining population, putting them in the "cold" group. Zhou highlighted San Antonio, Dallas, Orlando, and Houston as among the "hot" cities experiencing high population growth coupled with low housing supply.

How much do you need for a down payment on a house? On a $200,000 home, a 3% down payment means you'll need $6,000. FHA mortgage: 3.5%To get an FHA mortgage, you'll need at least a 3.5% down payment. It depends on what type of loan you're getting, but you may need between $9,000 and $60,000 for a down payment on a $300,000 house. A 20% down payment on a house allows you to avoid paying for private mortgage insurance, meaning you'll have a lower monthly mortgage payment and likely a lower mortgage rate as well.

REUTERS/Steve Marcus/File photoAug 2 (Reuters) - Refining rare earths for the green energy transition is hard. "The (rare earths) commissioning process is painstaking, with stops and starts," Jim Litinsky, MP's CEO and largest shareholder, told investors in May. Rare earths magnets turn power into motion and are the essential components in an electric vehicle's motor. Rare earths refining "is not really being addressed even by those who are developing magnet capacity," said Ryan Castilloux, a minerals consultant at Adamas Intelligence. American Rare Earths is working with U.S. government scientists at the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory to develop bacteria that could process rare earths.

"The era of global warming has ended; the era of global boiling has arrived." So said United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres in a speech Thursday at the UN headquarters in New York City. Also on Thursday, President Biden announced provisions to protect workers and communities from extreme heat, and had meetings scheduled with Mayor Kate Gallego of Phoenix, Arizona, and Mayor Ron Nirenberg of San Antonio, Texas, to discuss how their cities are handling extreme heat and how the federal government can help. "For vast parts of North America, Asia, Africa and Europe, it is a cruel summer," Guterres said. The record heat affecting communities across the globe is caused by climate change, and although the phenomenon has long been predicted, the pace of change is devastating, Guterres said.

The San Antonio Police Department, like the police in other cities, has a Mental Health Unit available around the clock to respond to calls that require trained, empathetic responses and support for people in distress. None of the mental health officers on duty were dispatched before Melissa Perez was shot and killed in her home last month by three police officers. Ms. Perez, 46, was exhibiting unusual behavior and had been diagnosed with schizophrenia. The police arrived to Ms. Perez’s apartment complex shortly after midnight in late June, after receiving reports that she was cutting fire alarm wires outside her apartment. According to video from the scene and police reports, when officers tried to get her to go into their car, she ran into her apartment and locked the door.

CNN —A 13-year-old kidnapping victim was rescued in Southern California after making a “Help Me!” sign to alert passersby, which then led to the arrest of a Texas man. Steven Robert Sablan, 61, is now facing federal kidnapping charges for the incident in which he is alleged to have pulled a gun on the girl as she walked along a sidewalk in San Antonio, Texas, earlier this month. “If you don’t get in the car with me, I am going to hurt you,” Sablan told the victim, according to court documents. A black handgun, later determined to be a BB gun, a switchblade, and handcuffs, were found in Sablan’s vehicle, according to the federal affidavit. If convicted on both charges, Sablan could face a sentence of up to life in prison.

Why It Matters: Many places have suffered sweltering heat and humidity. Many daily temperature records were set in June across the Southern United States, particularly in Texas and Louisiana. Temperatures in Laredo, Texas, reached 100 degrees on more than 20 days in June. The heat index, which also accounts for humidity, was well past 100 much of the time in all of these cities. Summer heat waves in Europe last year may have killed 61,000 people across the continent, according to a recent study.

House Republicans are proposing slashing funding for Amtrak and other infrastructure in the 2024 budget. The spending cuts, which would put Amtrak funding below 2003 levels, would also undermine the railroad's major plans to expand its routes and improve infrastructure in the Sunbelt and West. Passenger rail service is abysmal or nonexistent in most of the country. Both Houston — the fourth most-populous US city — and Phoenix, where the closest Amtrak station is 36 miles from downtown, have Amtrak service just three days a week, the railroad noted. More modern, electrified rail routes have even less environmental impact.

Many Texans are familiar with the chorus of cicadas that fills the air on the hottest days of early July. On Tuesday, the high temperature was expected to reach around 103 degrees in El Paso and San Antonio. “They start calling earlier because the minimum air temperature combined with solar radiation is reached earlier in the day,” he said. “They also call later into the afternoon and evening because they can maintain the elevated body temperatures for a longer period of time.”

CNN —Phoenix is supposed to be hot, but the severity of the upcoming heat wave will bring a level of heat that will test even heat-hardy places and do so for longer durations than have ever been observed before. The latest heat wave is really an extension of a continuous heat wave, which has never really stopped and has been affecting the South since mid-June. The duration of the current heat wave has meteorologists and climate scientists concerned. Forty high temperature records and more than 50 record high minimum temperatures could fall over the weekend across the US. With temperatures staying hot overnight, heat stress and heat exhaustion will set in much faster.

Roland Gutierrez, a Democratic state senator who has been an outspoken gun-control proponent since last year’s massacre in Uvalde, Texas, announced on Monday that he would seek Senator Ted Cruz’s seat next year. Mr. Gutierrez, whose district stretches from San Antonio to the Rio Grande and includes Uvalde, is the second major Democratic politician to enter the race, most likely ensuring a high-profile primary contest among Texas Democrats. Representative Colin Allred, a second-term congressman from the Dallas area, declared his candidacy in May. Both candidates have entered the race vowing to focus their attacks on Mr. Cruz rather than on any Democratic rivals. The walls around Victor Wembanyama, as he sat for a news conference Friday night at the Thomas and Mack Center, were plastered with images of past winners of the Las Vegas Summer League tournament. The summer league debuted the year after James’s rookie season, so its first marquee rookie was Dwight Howard, the top pick in 2004. As Wembanyama spoke with reporters, a picture of a smiling Howard could be seen on a wall to his right. The closest real comparison is to James’s entry into the league in 2003. Wembanyama had just finished his debut performance in a Spurs jersey, when he scored nine points with eight rebounds, three assists and five blocks.

WASHINGTON, July 6 (Reuters) - California Governor Gavin Newsom on Thursday urged the Department of Justice to open criminal and civil investigations into Florida's transportation of migrants to Martha's Vineyard and Sacramento in recent months. "We urge the USDOJ to investigate potential violations of federal law by those involved in this scheme." Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who is seeking the Republican Party's 2024 presidential nomination, last year arranged to transport dozens of migrants to the Massachusetts vacation island of Martha's Vineyard. Florida also acknowledged a role in sending two flights of migrants to California last month, saying all of them traveled voluntarily. A referral for potential criminal prosecution for that flight is pending with the Bexas County District Attorney's Office and the California Department of Justice has opened criminal and civil investigations into the circumstances of the Sacramento flights.
