Four more men have been arrested in Texas in connection with a human smuggling operation that left 53 people dead on the outskirts of San Antonio last year, federal prosecutors said on Tuesday. The arrests on Monday, which came one day shy of the first anniversary of the discovery of the dead migrants, marked a significant development in the federal investigation into one of the deadliest episodes involving migrants along the southern border of the United States in recent history. The arrests of the men brings to six the number of people facing criminal charges in the case. The four men arrested this week are Riley Covarrubias-Ponce, 30, Felipe Orduna-Torres, 28, Luis Alberto Rivera-Leal, 37, and Armando Gonzales-Ortega, 53, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office of the Western District of Texas. They were part of a human smuggling organization that brought people into the United States from Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico from December 2021 to June 2022, the federal prosecutor’s office in San Antonio said.

Trump. Mr. Hurd, 45, represented the 23rd District for three terms before deciding not to run for re-election in 2020, when a host of G.O.P. moderates in Congress chose to retire instead of appearing on a ticket led by President Trump. June 21 (Reuters) - When it comes to the 2023 NBA Draft, there is Victor Wembanyama and then there is everyone else. A so-called generational talent who can quickly change the trajectory of a franchise, Wembanyama is the most anticipated and hyped NBA Draft prospect since LeBron James, the league's all-time leading scorer, in 2003. I've never seen anything quite like him on a basketball floor," ESPN basketball analyst Jay Bilas said on a conference call. The Charlotte Hornets own the second pick in the NBA Draft while the Portland Trail Blazers are set to pick third overall. There will be 58 picks across two rounds in the 2023 NBA Draft instead of the usual 60 because Philadelphia and Chicago forfeited a second-round pick due to violating rules governing free agency discussions.

Texas power prices soared 100% on Tuesday amid a massive heat wave that broke some records. On Tuesday, San Angelo in western Texas set a new record high temperature of 114 degrees, topping its prior record of 111 degrees. Adding to the demand on Texas power supplies and prices is the tropical-level humidity in the state that worsens the heat effect, making it feel like 120 degrees or more. The heat wave is expected to last longer than a week, meaning the power grid will be under extended strain. The heat wave is expected to continue toppling records next week, when ERCOT sees demand reaching 82,080 MW on Monday and 83,555 MW on June 28.

The distance hurdle to abortion without Roe v. Wade

One year without Roe v. Wade How access to abortion has changed The nearest abortion clinic became a lengthy journey for millions of peopleOne year ago on June 24, 2022, the Supreme Court overturned the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade case that legalized abortion nationwide in the United States. When Roe v. Wade was overturned and states banned abortions, that number jumped almost 900 times to 16 million. The first map shows what the distance was when Roe v. Wade was in place and the second map shows what the distance is now, after Roe was overturned. The map on the left shows what the distance was in Guttmacher Institute’s “certain scenario” before Roe v. Wade was overturned. It was a rather unremarkable Tuesday at Central Park West and Columbus Circle. A light breeze rustled the sycamore branches hanging over a bicycle rental kiosk filled with neat rows of mint green helmets. Then, at 4:41 p.m., a black Mercedes van crept through the jam of buses, police vehicles and flower-adorned bicycle cabs. He was on his way to Yankee Stadium to throw the ceremonial first pitch for Tuesday night’s game with Seattle. It’s not unusual for officials in Texas to issue heat advisories around this time of year, said Monte Oaks, a meteorologist at the Weather Service’s San Antonio office. They typically do so when high temperatures combine with other factors, including high humidity and westerly winds that blow hot air from high-altitude deserts, he added. In this case, Mr. Oaks said, the humidity is high because Texas had a wetter and stormier spring than usual. But it also means that the hot ground is “cooking a lot of the moisture” and releasing it into the air. But there is enough supply to meet the demand, the company added, and it does not expect an “energy emergency.”Global warming is making dangerously hot weather more common, and more extreme, on every continent.
